Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

I find the fast travel mechanic... confusing. In the 15-or-so hours I've got in the game thus far, I haven't really had to fly anywhere.
This may sound glib, but have you tried not using the fast travel mechanic? Or do you mean the interplanetary flight not being like Elite’s?

I don’t use them in Bethesda games (or other open-world games either) because a good part of the game for me is discovering all the things on the way to my destination. In Starfield I’ve had a number of fun encounters in space and on planets that I’d otherwise would have missed if I’d just used the skip-game option.

Mind you, I’m also one of those who walks through my starship every time when embarking or disembarking 😁

Same, and I'm getting very good at optimizing internal layout to get where I need to be as direct as I can, even in 240m long, 150M wide and 12 decks tall M class beasts with the entrance on the bottom and the bridge on top.

When I played it was dependant on my mood or even my ship ( dragonfire had issues at certain places) where you would glitch through the floor m or if you change ship you get a both on the landing pad . The fast travel is good when your ship lands miles away from the poi and I can't be bothered to walk back . I don't use the srv much

The thrust of the comment was that it's an odd design choice to make something that is otherwise seemingly central to the game (consider all the other gameplay mechanisms attached to it) almost completely optional. I could, of course, not use fast travel. Nevertheless, having flown the ships somewhat, I can see why the developers made this choice - it's like playing Freelancer, a game from 2003.

Each to their own of course, but ship combat really engaged for me once I’d unlocked the first level of pilot skills which enabled 6 DOF movement, and then the ability to target specific ship parts.

Shooting the engines off an enemy and then boarding their now zero gravity ship for a floating shootout? It’s never got old for me.

Any info about the storyline? The link isn't working for me and official Bethesda page for the May update doesn't seem to mention anything like that.
I think there might have been a misread there - when I read the info the only mention of story content that I could see was regarding fixes to the Shattered Space DLC.

No, they announced a new storyline „Watchtower“ as part of Creations:

Speaking of, also launching later this month is another exciting Creation from the prolific Kinggath Creations, the team behind “McClarence Outfitters” (Starfield) and "East Empire Expansion” (Skyrim). “Watchtower” introduces a new storyline, new ship attachments and capabilities (like the ability to call in orbital strikes), gear and more.

Official Watchtower Description:
A new faction has emerged from the shadows to protect humanity from potential threats with excessive power – and they’ve identified you as their latest target. Join forces with a fellow adventurer hunted by Watchtower, befriend their contacts and work together to pilfer Watchtower’s technology and turn it against them.

My apologies for being wrong…though I think that info wasn’t in the original tweet or patch notes 😁

I do like the sound of orbital strikes, I wonder if they’ll be limited to the new quest or be more of a general ability?

So, I've been playing Starfield, on and off, since launch.
I've been through the Unity half a dozen times and, here's the funny thing; I've yet to buy/sell anything, haven't modded any weapons or suits, haven't bought a ship or built a ship.

Not sure if it's an issue with me or with the game but... I've just never felt the need to do any of that stuff.
Love crafting stuff in Skyrim, to create weapons and armor to suit my character, all my ED ships are engineered but, in Starfield, it just never seems like there's any real point.
I still enjoy finding different quests but they all seem to be stuff you can just complete using whatever happens to by lying around.

And so Starfield has something different for everyone. I almost completely only load up the game for doing ship builds with an ever increasing number of mods enhancing that particular aspect of the game.

I’m continually impressed by some of the ship creations players have shown but, like you, it’s something I barely touch in the game. When I got ownership of the Constellation I was quite happy to stick with her and just tinker with the various parts. Feels more in line with the Han Solo simulator I’ve been after since the original Elite 😁

Latest addition is a switch for turning off the artificial gravity - no practical purpose, but I like floating about the ship when in space.

If you simply enjoy doing that stuff, that's great. (y)

The thing that's starting to become apparent to me, though, is how little of the game's crafting/building/trading mechanics are actually necessary.

In Skyrim/Fallout trading, at the very least, was crucial.
There was always something that you wanted/needed so it was always important to haul sacks of junk out of every dungeon so you could take it to a trader, sell it and then buy something you wanted.
In Starfield, it simply doesn't seem to matter.
The Starborn suit and ship are "good enough" that I've never bothered trying to look for anything better and by the time I've encountered a dozen NPCs I've got half a dozen decent weapons that I can use until they're out of ammo' and just toss them.

And then there's the perks.
Honestly, I can't really provide examples, here, because it's that long since I picked a perk that I can't remember what they are.
Again, in Skyrim/Fallout you needed different skills/perks in order to play the game the way you wanted to.
In Starfield, everything seems to be a case of "wander around until something/somebody attacks and then keep shooting until you're the only thing left alive"
The perks/skills can make that easier but, if it's already do-able, you don't actually need the perks at all.

Granted it's a paid mod, but the amount of STUFF it introduces...! :O

Once I get a new PC (at the current state of PC hardware probably never) I'm planning to get it. What I don't like however is how this has been pitched across the internet. A not well informed player might come to think this is an official expansion. But it's just a mod that just so happens to have been (purposely) released on the day of the latest official Starfield patch.

In a happy coincidence for me, I saw some good things about this mod and decided to check out Creations for the first time - and was given 1000 credit things for doing so. Just the right amount to pay for the mod 😁

I’m waiting until I’ve finished my current play through before introducing it though.

What a world we live in now, where people charge for mods.
