Game Discussions Bethesda Softworks Starfield Space RPG

Ok well it seems pretty,l, I like the weapons they seem to have some meat them and sound decent.
The combat AI seems pretty rudimentary though which is a little worrying.
I'm a little wary about the copy+paste of this though, it could have a lot of that which is generally ok as long as other aspects make up for it.

What's going to make or break this for me is exploration, how deep and engaging is it? How does the loop for this fit into research and crafting and the story overall? If it's a space game then exploration and doing a damn good job of it has to be very high priority.

The graphics look really good. It doesn't need to be the latest cutting edge tech. We won't be seeing the limit of what UE5 is capable of for a couple of years. Maybe the next generation of consoles can handle that.
I disagree. Lighting looks immediately dated (*). Maybe it's a pre-production issue but I doubt it, usually Bethesda iterate over their pre-existing engine and at this stage of the project, everything is pretty much done and they are fleshing out the campaign, missions, and gameplay details. Also first UE5 productions are getting out real soon, with graphics that surpass pretty much everything else right now, including Decima which itself is far ahead of everything else (and has been used in a few games by now). The new lighting system from UE5 pretty much kills the competition, it's like ray tracing without having to pay the computing price for it.

(*) I'll certainly buy it shortly after release, like almost every other Bethesda game but FO76. I like their RPG's and I like sci-fi themed games. I dont think graphics were their strength ever, they were always good and serviceable but not top-tier.

Why are people comparing this with Star Citizen?

I am no advocate for SC but, it's a completely different game being an MMO when Starfield is single player narrative driven.

Better to compare it to Squadron 42. I am sure that won't be released before Starfield. 😜
Because SQ42 doesn't exists, so not much to compare other than Star Citizen and NMS now.

While Elite Dangerous is very different from Starfield, so not really comparable.

Yeah ED is centered on ship piloting. SC and Starfield are "first person shooter" first, with ship piloting being just a simplistic way to get from A to B (at least that's the impression I get from that presentation). I dont think SC flight model will ever become any better, and Starfield looks like NMS in that regard - canned animations for landing / take off, which is not really worse than the horrendous physics from SC and at least look a bit more realistic.
I like that they include NPC crew mates - we'll see how it goes during flights (what will be the average flight duration for example ?) as there's room for interesting development.

Holy crap, did bethesda just make the perfect middle finger to the 3 large space games? It’s like the took all the publically acknowledged shortcomings of all the games and actually went ahead and built it. I think there was some speculation here on whether or not they would reach far enough, laughing in doubt but they did it.

Star citizen is dead. Wait I mean finally I get to play it. I never had a problem with the concept of star citizen, just the horrific exploitation of charity.

Also if odd looked like this, I’d be beating down doors for a gpu upgrade (as I will be next year).

Very excited.

That gameplay trailer was so pointedly targeted at all the current space games… what a twist. I hope they get the full success of what they make.

Also +1 for creativity with the build your own ship idea. And base building :)) we need to find Todd Howard’s frontier forum account… someone.. was listening to our banter it seems..
This!!!
Soon I'll have two spacegames on my Xbox series X to replace ED.
NMS for endless exploration and plain fun and Starfield for everything else including realism.
I love it that you can design and build your own ship instead of purchasing new ones, and you can hire crew on your ship that you can actually see, unlike ED, and perhaps even interact with.
I realy don't mind Frontier stopping further development on console anymore because from what I've seen Odyssey doesn't get even close to what Starfield will have to offer.
Actually I'm glad that without further development on console I won't be tempted to spend any more money on ED.
On top of that you can be sure Bethesda will come with further expansions and dlc for Starfield, just as they did for Fallout and Skyrim, I'll use my money there.
Ugh, and to think I get to play it day one on Gamepass!

Oh if they make this game modable, would love to fly ships from Star Treak, Babylon 5, Firefly. Really really glad it's not MMO. Much less limitations on the game.
They already said that Starfield will be fully modable, just like their previous games like Skyrim.

WOW.... I really like what I see! It has elements of Elite and Space Engineers, and at least to some extent X4 Foundations (hirable crew). It also has a bit of a Mass Effect feel, but more open world IIRC. I wonder if there's a proper simulated economy - I fast-forwarded through some parts, did they say anything about that?

As for graphics, I agree with those who say they are not cutting edge (UE5 setting that new standard), but I'm totally okay with that. They are more than good enough for me, and if they were too good, this probably wouldn't run on my computer at all. The graphics are better than all my trifecta of favorite space games listed above (and an entirely different league than NMS), so I have zero complaints.

I probably should be worried that this will be a bug-ridden mess. Let's just say I won't be preordering it, but I'm not going to write it off before it's had a chance to prove (or disprove) itself, even if it is a Bethesda game.

This is now a 2023 release, yes?

My Bijin copilot approves of this message ;)

Did anyone get a good look at their galaxy map? Obviously it's nothing of the scale of Elite, but I noticed Sol, so I wonder if the 100 systems they do have are based on actual stellar data? That would make me quite happy.

Its firmly a late ps4 era title with a few notable plusses and minuses, which is good enough for me. Game graphics are in an odd place at the moment. The horizon series have set the bar for the entire industry for a while now and noone has even tried to match it (the step prior was w3 in 2015) something like that. So when exactly is the next real advancement coming? The cliff edges have been the same for a while?

As time rolls on the pc vs console gap is going to get even greater...

Just watching that trailer for the third time now. If you lay all that ontop of the principles of skyrim.. wow.

EDIT: IF the spaceflight part is closer to no mans sky given the trailer.. i bet / hope one of the first things the .. modding community .. will do is put in a supercruise like experience.

I'd settle for 4 player co-op myself...enough of this MMO nonsense I say :)
Give me a believable world full of believable NPCs, and I'm happy with 1 player no-co. Of course if I could get my wife to play, then 2 player co-op would be perfect :) I don't know if she would get into this game or not. Flying spaceships is not her thing, but she loved Skyrim and building homes in ESO, so if there are pretty worlds for her to explore and inhabit, she just might!

But yeah, I'm really hoping that this game puts the same effort into NPC characters, story lines, quests, etc. that Skyrim did. I could live in such a world for a long, long time. Just use more voice actors, please! I don't want to hear the same voice for ever third NPC I meet, LOL.

After I watched that video, I realized that Bethesda had launched a cruise missile at NMS and Star Citizen. :) Not that they are deliberately setting out to compete with those projects, but that they looked at both, asked themselves what people liked and disliked about both, and set out to make a game that addresses both sides of the coin for the win. From the looks of it, they might come darn close to achieving that goal!

(I don't think Elite was a factor in Starfield's planning. Through a combination of design, misdesign, and neglect, Elite now occupies its own niche, for better or worse.)

I am particularly stunned by the graphics - somehow Bethesda developed an engine with some sort of anti-aliasing implemented. I didn't think that was possible in a space game! I also enjoyed the combat: enemy NPCs didn't have personal shields that forced the player to switch weapons like a juggling clown to take them down! Even better, when enemy NPCs were engaged in combat, every single NPC on the entirety of the map didn't dogpile on the player! That's innovation! /sarcasm

But seriously, this is looking...impressive. I was particular impressed by the number of star systems/planets. I was expecting just a few, richly developed locales. I didn't think they would go after Star Citizen's goal of 100 systems. I was pleased to see that the planets weren't just lush earth-likes, but also barren moons, desert planets and so on. A nice diversity!

I want more details on the space portion of the game, though. The ship construction sounds really interesting, as well as hiring crews. I was particularly intrigued by the asteroid fields and space stations. My dream game would have lots of those Elite-like space locales in addition to the planets/moons. If outer space is as richly realized as the planets, this could be the new king of space games, as far as I am concerned.

I am concerned about the framerate, though. Maybe it was just me being hyper-critical, but it looked like the game was chugging in a few spots. I am glad to see this going to be available in the cloud (both for performance and portability).

I wonder what sort of DLC they have planned? An expansion of the map beyond the 100 systems would be very welcome! I also wonder if modding will be fully supported - probably yes as that is a hallmark of Bethesda games. If players can iterate on the game with new planets, stations etc, this game could get very exciting very fast!

Well, color me cautiously optimistic. Perhaps more so because Bethesda seems very confident in this title based on a number of leaks that have come out recently. Even though we have all said this too much over the last few years, maybe, just maybe, this will be the space game to rule them all!

🤞

simplistic system is from NMS, SC is superior in handling ships than NMS and ED, but probably very similar to starfield.

10.000 people? Don't tell me Starfield is going to be a MP only game.

If you find a location on a planet, post pictures and how to find it on forums so that other players can also find it that also qualifies as thousands of other players finding it before you. Just because they aren't in your particular single player version of the the game doesn't mean they didn't find it first if it is identical to the one you "discovered". I mean how do we even know you even discovered it, you could just have followed a forum guide to get there.

The reason I held off on ED for as long as I did was because I was a fan of FE2 and FFE back in the day along with Privateer 2 and wanted more of that - and the most played games I had in my library at the time were Skyrim and New Vegas. The multiplayer shared galaxy, for better or worse, doesn't allow for the kind of "let's see what happens if I pick this route in this questline" that I liked in those games.
So yeah, I'm definitely keeping my eye on this.
