"Beyond" free for Horizon owners - LEP musings

Hi Zac,

thanks for the answer, I appreciate it.
Now you have me (and others) quite wondering what those cool things are !
I guess I'll find out in due time.

Engineers is a big perk and so its pay to win. I'd expect the same for Beyond. I do not have a problem with this, its a good game business model.

It is not pay to win, certainly not in classic sense. You can't buy progress, it is just additional game time you spend getting something more advanced.

I already won this game back in 3301, so for me it's more just pay to gloat, or something. ;)

Well, I guess not, since I have the LEP. Hmm...

Right, as you were.

Oohhhh.. so those posters who posted about Paid DLC content were right after all!!! Wonder where they got their information from...

Excited!!!!

Yeah that's an apology from me to the guy I called a nutter. I stupidly assumed that some mention would have been made of it at the Expo.

Engineers helps you jump further, kill quicker and survive longer. Its pay to win/grind.

In fact there he is. See above. Hell, I'm feeling so apologetic I'm not even going to get into saying the Engineers aren't pay-to-win, let's leave that for another day.

It's amazing how you talk with such certainty about something you know absolutely nothing about. Just reminds me of:

"Largest Audience Ever to Witness an Inauguration, Period"

Yeah lol we know those crazy statements "the noble peace prize goes to"

*Chuckles in the background*

The sad state of the gaming industry is I almost hope it is just paid content.

You can almost guarantee fleet carriers and the guild system will be locked behind a pay wall.

However the cinic in me believes the engineer improvements they spoke of will be pay to win lootbox garbage.

Remember this is a Tencent company now. As someone who has spent more on elite between the base game, horizons, and cosmetics then I have on any other game in recent memory i will not buy into a pay to win or lootbox model.

Go down this road Fdev and you will forever lose a loyal customer.

What exactly would be "pay to win" and how it is even related? :)

Also FD won't return to season model, and we know it already. There will be paid for expansions but in what form and how they will be delivered FD clearly haven't figured out yet (as Dale pointed it out).

you can categorize horizons as payed to win ,the ability to improve your ship over people that have not payed for it ,there is a distinct advantage that people without RNGneer mods will never win against them

Hey Astral! This is a very reasonable and understandable post. Hopefully I can put your mind at ease a little.

In addition to all the content talked about at Frontier Expo, we also have some pretty cool things in the works which will be available to purchase. We're not ready to talk about them just yet so we can't give you any details but rest assured that the lifetime expansion pass owners will be looked after and will be getting their hands on premium content as part of their lifetime expansion pass before the end of 2018 and the Beyond series of updates.

I hope that helps,

Zac

Interesting Zac. So it sounds like there will be some features for sale during 2018 in addition to what was talked about at the Expo. Not just cosmetic stuff as the LEP people don't get that content for free, but rather something else, actual game features or content, which the LEP owners do qualify for. Very interesting.

Kudos to Zac!

Players were asking a reasonable question and got a reasonable answer.

I do feel reassured. Thank you.

Regarding the contentious issue of a 10 year plan:

Before seeing today's good news from Zac, I went digging through Frontier's 2017 Annual Report for lifetime expansion pass info and found this nugget:

"Non-current deferred income is due to be recognised over the expected remaining life of the franchise period. At 31 May 2017 the expected remaining life of the franchise is considered to be four and a half years. The deferred revenue is in respect of Elite Dangerous lifetime expansion passes purchased during the financial year and Elite Dangerous:Horizons revenue in respect of future promised content. The carrying values of deferred income are considered to be a reasonable approximation of fair value."

So it would appear the official plan runs through 2022. The game launched at the end of 2014, so let's call it eight years. Make of that what you will.

and there may even be some stuff for LEP owners that isn't available to the rest of us - and I say jolly good too.

that would be wrong. zac said 'premium' content, not 'exclusive'. afaik lep was a pass for paid content, if it's 'paid' it must be available to anyone (meeting requirements) willing to pay.

not that i would personally make any drama, but it would be a dumb move.

This.

LEP should not equal "exclusive" content. Any content LEP owners get should be available for puchase via expansion or w/e they will be called by everyone else.

Just to clarify LEP owners should get any "preorder" exclusive stuff since LEP is like a huge long term preorder/prebought option.

The 'E' in 'LEP' stands for 'Expansion'. I don't think that making up the value of the LEP with cosmetics would be a good move and I don't think it's something that FDev would try to pull. I never liked the idea of exclusive ships because they can't make them anything other than average as it would be unfair to others. I have access to the CobMkIV but I don't think I ever flew it outside of the initial beta. It really has to be something substantial which adds gameplay and is available to others for purchase or the level of meltdown would make offline-gate seem tame in comparison.

That's the speculation I'm going with.

The only people that really means anything to are PvP people. But that means without horizons it is a time to win game, basically the more time you get the better ship you have.

Also when I bought horizons I wasn't suddenly better then anyone else. In fact I didn't even touch the engineers for about 5 months after they got released.

No real difference.
