BGS changes: Learnings/Issues/comments

If you don't mind a quick beginner question in between (otherwise just ignore me please): When you say "all your systems", does it mean your MF needs to be the controlling faction in all systems or is this irrelevant?

No. But expanding should be easier from a controlling system with many stations owned, at least if it still uses influence.

Expansion is a faction-wide state. That is, unlike all the other states which are per faction, per system, Expansion applies across your entire faction.

Happiness is on the system status panel, or in the squadron allegience page:

If it's the happiest, it says so (i.e Happy [Happiest])... but like all good things at the moment, it's thought that measure might be broken at the moment.

If Expansion is same as pre-3.3, then why 2 of my 7 systems do not have that state and have you seen Happiest yet?

If 2 of your systems are really not saying expansion, then that's a first, and another bug. Happiest is listed next to one of your systems on the squad page, has done since launch, but in our experience, it does not change, and can be against a Happy system even when you have Elated systems, so is considered to be bugged.

Here's the states and happiness of my 7 systems.

Here's the states and happiness of my 7 systems.
The two that are marked as pending expansion have updates >=1 day old, so if you check those in game they're almost certainly also active Expansion now.

This looks like a normal expansion - the happiness-based expansions have not been implemented yet - centred on your Investment+Civil Liberty+Expansion system.

That one. They're all in expansion, Inara is just out of date. I never use inara for this sort of thing, there's too much latency. The only good info is real, in-game info.

RE: Happiest state...

That's what it should look like, though bear in mind, I think it's completely bugged as I had an expansion that didn't propagate from the happiest system. I presumed that to be an anomoly since it was expansion which started pre-3.3, but others have reported that expansion is still happening similar to pre-3.3 mechanics.

EDIT: Thjs also explains a lot. You would've been in Expansion Pending for the last 7 days, since it's only gone active in the last day or two... this is normal for Expansion.

You are correct and reading News, it says Expansion is from the system in Investment state - coincidence?

Not entirely coincidental - the actions required to get an Investment state will also increase influence and therefore make reaching the Expansion threshold more likely - but no direct link between the two.

Which kinda suggests it's still using pre-3.3 mechanics for expansion :/

I do have a fuzzy recollection of FD saying the expansion mechanics were having teething issues and might not make it. I think it was in the BGS 3.3 Q&A reveal stream.

Unfortunately I can't find the original - I can find references to people saying they heard it going back to the end of November, but not the original.

If i recall correctly the newly proposed expansion mechanic was mentioned in one of the weekly live-streams before 3.3 launch - the BGS introduction one (i think). They talked about it being happiness related without going into huge detail. They acknowledged it wasnt in the beta, nothing in patch notes. We have had a few expansions working as per 3.2.

Since there was a theory that states were limited to 3 at a time, counter-examples: GVC Flying Tigers in Sovereign's Reach are currently in Investment, Pirate Attack, Civil Unrest and Election ... while ICU Colonial Corps have Investment, Civil Liberty, Pirate Attack and Expansion in both Diggidiggi and Los.

That fits better with FD's feature notes from Beta that indicated up to five States.

Great spot. I thought it was somewhat arbitrary to have 3, when more could coexist

I have a 4 state system too now. For me the problem was either a bug with in / or retreat + election / war. The 4th state (pirate attack) seems to be an extra just like the Thargoid states.

AFAIK, they never mention Retreat in the Livestreams.
To paraphrase them "1 Economic, 1 Security, 1 Conflict, Expansion as a global state, and 1 Special that we wont tell you about" - Thargoid Attacks, Outbreak, and Pirate Attack appear to be the known specials.
Where Retreat fits in we have not been told. If I was to try an fit it into one of those Categories, I would not be able to. Maybe it will become apparent when they implement the planned Expansion, as they were the 2 Movement states.

Retreat seems to be able to coexist with any other state - certainly I have examples of Retreat+Conflict, Retreat+Expansion and Retreat+Special.
