BGS is literally on fire

To find systems affected by this - go to Inara's factions page
Pick or search for a faction that is currently active
Look at their overview page and sort by "trend"
This is a faction on the edge of the bubble that is mostly dead, data for most systems days old:

This is a random faction on page 5 that I recognized the name of - Canonn

Those top few systems all seem to have the characteristic downward spike on the controlling faction and one other rising sharply. Looking at systems with positive tends is not as clear cut, but sometimes also shows this spiking behavior.
My own faction, The Dark Wheel, has at least 9 systems significantly affected. There are plenty of others!

Snooping back at some of the systems linked in the last couple of pages, I noticed the Teabagger's system Upsilon Aquarii

This system has what I initially expected might be the cause - the introduction of a new faction - Independent Rescue Coalition

The arrival of the Rescue faction did cause a rebalance of influence, but this same system has also had today's crazy spike as well.

Our systems:

We have others as well, but these are the worst affected.

Keep-em coming! The more empirical data we can give them, the better likelihood they'll identify the cause as well as "whether this is an ongoing problem" or "one off due to patch day".

Sally (ever on the ball with these things) has put a thread up noting the problem over in the updates channel for Elite.... So we know they're "on it"

I have to say of all things that are mysterious to me in ED, BGS is #1 and I admire those that can track it so precisely..

Since update 14 is mostly a large BGS adjustment, is it perhaps that if things were left to its own devices, would these issues smooth out over time? Or is that not the right way of thinking for this issue? (not saying to "wait and see", just curious)

Just trying to understand it some..

3 options:
1. There were multiple "ticks" during the update. Or data was snapshotted in a funny way. The 24 hour drops are as a result of natural patch day shenanigans. We did notice that a number of wars/elections appear to have started, and resolved themselves in a "draw" entirely during server downtime (meaning 4+ days have passed in server time). No ongoing issue - therefore we just have to pick up the pieces. DOWNSIDE is that all these factions are now down on single digit percentages having been comfortably at the top of the table. Which means 3-4 factions are ABOVE them and to return to the status quo - likelyt 4 back to back wars/elections to resolve - tying up players who would otherwise be fighting against Tharg/engaging with game content.
2. There's something screwy with ongoing BGS calculations re "inputs" to factions. Potentially tied to the boost for payouts for exobiology. Which means ongoing problem and expect to see player groups in dire straits. Same effect as 1. Players doing BGS intensively instead of enjoying new content. Hard earned work over years lost in rapid fire AARGH
3. Is a consequence of a change to the galaxy related to thargoid invasion. Potentially insertion of "hidden" factions in preparation for Stargoid 2 to 7 arrival? Rescue factions etc? Unknown - but the insertion of these rescue ships/factions and of course prep for stargoids landing MUST have something going on under the hood as - the system would break if you just inserted a 9th faction into the mix maybe. This one is speculation - but MIGHT explain the seemingly random spread of the effect. Looking at current stargoid incursion - the effect of just 1 arriving has quite a large radius of "smashy systems". and given the size and scale of certain player groups - worth considering. But effect is much the same on player groups.

From leading faction at 38.7%inf to 10%inf
This isn't the only system.
Opposite we also seeing in some of our system, from low inf to high inf + leading faction.

The arrival of the Rescue faction did cause a rebalance of influence, but this same system has also had today's crazy spike as well.

Before the update, we were at 49% in UA. When the rescue faction moved in, it grabbed a whopping 30% INF, putting us second place, but we are still in control. As of now, the rescue faction is down to 4.6%, but two other factions suddenly rose up out of the blue and put us third place (and might start a war against each other). One of them not even has any assets at all, but got 26.1% INF granted by the 'rebalance'. Two days after the update, we find ourselves at 16.9%. It's all gone over the hill, BGS-wise, but FD are working on it.

As for the Maelstrom, I doubt they would put a rescue ship inside a system that is going to be attacked, but who knows. Another question would be whether the rescuers leave the system along with their boat if they go down to 1% or so (they're not native, but come from Antai, a prison colony 128ly away) ;)

That's how it goes for them btw. In two of the systems, they're at the brink of a war. Interesting times!

This is Tir out in Colonia, the hard working player faction controlling the system, CCN, dropped from 43% down to 12%. I know for a fact they put in a ton of work yesterday, mission running, bounty hunting and exploration data.

This system is historically difficult to move, even if some space cadet put a - instead of a + in the code, it wouldn't account for this drop.

Please get your act together FDEV, then do a rollback.

I think the most probable cause is that the data in example one are too old...
