Bitten by an ASP.

Got to say I had noticed blurred shadows too, I will try this fix later. The problem I have is I cannot seem to be able to access the folder:

GraphicsConfiguration.xml in EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1010

to do the fix:

in <Shadows_High> ( or <Shadows_Medium> whatever setting you use ) set <AdaptiveCascades>false</AdaptiveCascades> and restart

However, I am very pleased you are now a fully loved up Asp lover again Z:)

Glad you got it sorted, no reason to dislike the Asp now. I'm sure the cult of Asp will take you back provided certain monetary reparations are made :D

Indeed the ship feels more substantial, and I find it FAR more enjoyable to fly. I also now find the cockpit view to be PERFECT in terms of aesthetics and realism. That being said, I am not really much of a cultist, but thank you for the kind offer to pay me money (that is what you meant right? ;) ). Perhaps one day there will be a ship in the ED universe that will inspire in me the kind of fervent zeal displayed here by others regarding the Asp. But as of this moment, I find all of the ships to be a compromise of one kind or another. And none of them are aesthetically or functionally "perfect" in my eyes. The Asp comes close, but it is a bit too slow, too large, and too polygonally basic for me to love it without reservations. I am looking forward to an Asp Mk II. Maybe it will look a little less plain and conform a little less to the polygon shackles of the past.

Oh, I actually agree with you. Well, except for the money thing :) I quite like my Asp for what it is, but to claim it's a beauty would be taking it a bit far. It's a rugged, utilitarian looking ship that's great for exploration and more or less pretty good at everything else. Combat wise it pays the price for lots of firepowe and excellent hardpoint placement by being almost impossible to miss. It's my hope that as time goes by and new ships are added the restrictions of clinging to original elite's simple shapes will go away (Still love the Cobra, though).

As it is I just go look at Gutamaya stuff for eye candy purposes. Still need to grab a courier, may set that up for some RES fun :)

I knew you would see the light! (And the shadows!:p)

I do see the shadows in my Asp...hmm..or so I think... will check tonite!

But it seems that wasn't enough, though!

Here, get some more preaching to save your soul, you can thank me later :p:

-One of the things I like the most about the Asp, as mentioned before by someone else, is the cockpit view. BEATS...ANY...OTHER...COCKPIT..VIEW..AVAILABLE. Single-handedly and by far. I feel claustrophobic when in other cockpits now.

-The rough looks is what precisely does it for me. There is something utterly Alien-esque in its look that reminds me of the Sulaco's dropship.

Yea it's a bit like a hybrid between that dropship and the Narcissus (Nostromo's shuttle from the first movie).

I consider my two Asps the Deutz Fahr tractors of the game. Mount any implement. Power any implement to great performance.
It just breathes pure functionality.

The Asp cockpit reminds me of some WW2 bombers or some helicopter cockpits with its spectacular view. Thanks mates for the graphics tip. Works great. I love this boat and plan on keeping it even when I get virtually rich enough to purchase a more expensive ship. Gee...wasn't Cleopatra bitten by an asp? Or is that an Ancient Egyptian urban legend?

Oh...as far as that setting getting overwritten with each update...I believe it does.

Ok, I just pulled back into the bubble tonight after a three week sojourn to Sag A and the Core (made Pioneer!). And after refitting my Asp for some mission based trade runs, smuggling, light bounty hunting, and bubble exploration, I realize that I had been outfitting the ship all wrong. Once I put the right gear together on her, she now handles like a dream and burns through Pythons and Sidewinders alike, and she can still jump almost 29LY and has a 6A scoop, DSS, and ADS. Maybe I just needed to spend a bunch of time just learning how to handle her in the Black? Idk. But yeah, I am converted. I now LOVE the Asp. I even have two extra small hard points that I have no idea what to do with, so I put Dumbfire missles in there for archery practice. Even without the dumbfire missles, I am out DPSing a Vulture, so I am not sure what better kinetics I could use there?

The Asp is a stunning ship how dare you diss her :)
I personally love the cockpit in the Asp, its much better than the cramped DBE's cockpit and has excellent visibility.
Shame on you Cdr Ziljan, I am just going to sponge and polish my Asp, I may be some time :)

ppftt... Heresy!!!....the Asp is perfect!! Perfect!!...but oh well...dear Voorheez, like you, this peasant Ziljan will be posting one day a thread about how flawed he was when he made this statement!:p

And here he is, as I called it few days ago: he's seen the light!!! Rejoice! For the Asp has finally enlightened his lost soul!!

YOU ARE VERY WELCOME CMDR!! THE ASP IS "THE SHIP"!!

Also, welcome back from your long expedition!!! Please find a warm blanket, have a shower and enjoy the day as Martinez goes about its regular operation day. They will be downloading the data of the exploration and will be issuing your hefty paycheck!

I hope you find Cantor Terminal's outfitting market a good one for your Asp!

Now, how should we name this beauty of yours again? A christening for both of you is in order!!

As per the kinetics, I use MULTICANNONS in the medium hard points. Also, you want to have a A grade powerplant for all energy demand and to run cool.

I had a similar issue with trying to figure out what to do with the last two small hardpoints (2 beams in C2 slots and 2 bursts in 2 c1 ones). I ended up putting a couple of cannons there, the lasers burn through shields and hull alike fast enough, but if I'm fighting something bigger I use cannons to bring them down faster. She sure has the firepower, and handles quite well for her size. There's a fair degree of inertia, taking a few seconds to align vectors after a sudden course change, but I'm fine with it, it can be useful when you get used to it.

It was named rather optimistically the Bessel Meridian, since the goal was to make it to the far end of the Galaxy and divide the night sky in half by blazing a trail down the center of the Galaxy, much like the Astronomer Friedrich Bessel and his Zenith Telescope. Alas I ran out out steam at the midway point and was forced to return home due to a shortage of tofu, bacon, and strong beer.

Ah yes Med Multi Cs are a common fixture on combat Asps, but that is the exact mistake I was making before. This leaves only four small lasers to bring down the shields, which are somewhat weak even in Beam format and awkwardly arrayed in the lower front of the ship. I saw a video from Gamescom where someone at FD was using 4 lasers in a wide X formation on an Asp and it hit me like bolt of lightening. Not only was this hardpont formation aesthetically pleasing and well placed, but the damage and efficiency is far superior even in Pulse laser format (which is the optimal laser actually). Wings of Eagles and Sidewinders vanish in seconds since each ship is almost instantly vaporized with only half of a capacitor drained. With just the 4 Pulse Lasers, it does a little bit more DPS than a Vulture with only 2 large pulse, but it also can pile on two small kinetics for even more DPS.

I also figured out a way to slot two layered SCBs that have different power priorities so that when I have my weapons stowed they can both go off simultaneously for added defense in case I encounter a wing while solo. My power usage is @ 111% and yet somehow I have enough power that FSD is always on for a quick getaway.

Its the perfect ship for everything I love to do. Exploration, Combat, Search & Rescue, and light Rares Trading. It also makes a decent Bounty Hunter.

Thanks for this Asp combat advice. I'm currently with Damocles out exploring again (and omg am I happier in her than my old favourite the DBE).
Glad to see you are pro Asp Ziljan. It's comforting to see a group of experienced players favouring this awesome ship. They are worth every credit spent on them.

Did you figure out what config was that? Laser in the mid points? Probably turreted?

I think they had 4 beams in the video, but that is a pretty bad solution for a 4A power distributor. So I did the math and slotted the best DPS/DPE config available for the slot and the power distribution: 2 med pulse, 2 small pulse. Gimbals not turrets. Turrets do great DPE, and are a good way to go if you have massive shields and bad agility (like an Anaconda?). But the Asp is fairly agile and somewhat fragile so turrets are an unnecessary gambit imo. On my Asp, I put the small pulse in the widest slots because those are the ones that have the best firing arc. The firing pattern also looks prettier imo. You can check the math for ideal DPS/DPE here:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=140240

total wattage of 2 med pulse + 2 small pulse lasers: 6.16 MW

4A power regen: 3.5 MW

Capacitor Bank: 32 MJ

Time to drain: 32 / (6.16-3.5) = 12 seconds

Damage = DPS x time = 37.84 MW x 12 seconds = 454.08 MJ per capacitor (@ 4 pips)

If you add in the Dumbfire Missile damage vs large targets, the DPS goes up by about ~50%

If you can beat that DPS and total damage per capacitor drainage with another build, please let me know.

What color settings do you have on your HUD? It looks fantastic.

I too would like to know this.

But back to the ASP adoration. I was determined to try something more photogenic for my next expedition, and put together a couple of builds, but ended up back in the cockpit of the Mazurek again.

I came up with quite a usable Courier build and a Clipper build as well, but even with the awesome looks and in the clippers case, the incredible 7B scoop (over 1T per second scoop rate!), I still fell back into the Asp, it's just too good at what it does. (And the 6A scoop is pretty impressive too.)
