General / Off-Topic Blade Runner 2049

Saw this on Friday night. Both me and Mr's Mallory were looking forward to this... When it had finished I turned to my wife and said "I really wanted to go after the first hour but I knew you really wanted to see this." to which she replied "I did too but thought you'd want to see it all."

Bladerunner - One of the greatest films of all time

Bladrunner 2049 - One of the worst films of all time

Interesting. I went with my wife who also hated it and that definitely coloured my opinion by osmosis. I'm going again next Wednesday and I have to see the film has stayed with me and I'm now REALLY looking forward to seeing it again with the boyz after a few beers.

For us it was to full of tried and tested Hollywood tropes from start to finish. The plot tries to be clever while attempting to lead the audience in the wrong direction while at the same time giving away the truth. This is used to be some kind of big twist which falls as flat as Sixth Sense did with it's big end reveal. To top it all they then use the Rutger Hauer death music to somehow make us feel bad for the Bladerunner, personally I found this insulting as that scene in the original is just perfection.

Also I felt the CGI city to be far less detailed than the model city from the original - Lighting was just as I suspected it would be - Blacker then any shade of black we'll ever encounter even when in deep space.

In short I could go on and list all the good films this has borrowed from in an attempt to be liked but it fell flat due to one of the originals biggest draws - Two stories. In the first we have the cop story and of course the love story - This is just about the love story and quite frankly I wish they had told the story of Deckard and Rachel after the first film.

Very disappointed by this movie despite avoiding the hype train to keep it fresh.

Glad some of you are enjoying it though :)

EDIT: Forgot to mention... I blame Tj for it being so bad! :D

Loved it went to see it a second time and bought the soundtrack. One of the most complete sequels I have ever watched. Glad I went to the big screen to see it. The original under performed as well and that turned out to be a classic.........just something to bare in mind;)

I wish I was English like my hero Tj.
I dunno Bran.... Can't agree.

That 'love' story in the first one was some of the worst drivel I've ever seen in a film. It's on par with the Star Wars prequels as far as cringe-worthy love scenes go.

I love the first movie too, but it has a lot of flaws.

The new one has awesome visuals and a tight story. I stand by my assessment that it's a worthy successor. :)

Again +1

Maybe it would have been a better love story had there been more story behind it, or had it been given more time to develop. And maybe it would have been a better scene had it not been all "1950's smash our faces together with the force of two freight trains" silliness.

Blade Runner Love Story, in ten sentences or less...

"Hi, I'm Rachel."
"Deckard."
"Do you like our owl?"
"You're a replicant."
"No way!"
"Member those spiders?"
"Wait... spiders... am I...?"
"Let's smash, yo!"

The main thing that annoyed me about the movie was that I was not in it.

Read this lol

also the studio execs mess with film trying to grab a female market that clearly dosnt not exist

In a way the sequel kinda fixes the terrible romance of deckard and rachael in the first film.
The implications made by wallace on that subject when Deckard is his guest might suggest that the romance was'nt natural to begin with.

Yeah, that was interesting, wasn't it? Kind of implies that Deckard is a replicant, but it's the only such implication in the film afaik. It's kept vague, which I liked.

Yeh, I think the evidence is mounting as to Deckards origins but it not being explicitly confirmed in either film is a good move.

2 Other possible suggestions that Deckard is a replicant, that i noticed.

'how does it feel to kill your own kind?' at the films start. Kay replies with something along the lines of his model being loyal and the older models being less loyal and going rogue. Maybe suggesting Deckard being one of these models.

and

Deckard himself saying ' they where hunting us' to Kay. suggesting that he was being hunted as well as Rachael because he also was a replicant. (although hunting can imply different things).

As a mod you know of course that you are wrong but I won't hold it against you :D

That's one of the great things about movies, we can all have a different opinion of them and a different take on the plot/story.
But your still wrong!

:p

Are we still watching out for spoilers? I don't know if everyone who wants to see the movie has now seen it

There's also the fact that Wallace states to Deckard, Deckard's own feelings about seeing Rachael for the first time. It seemed to be an echo of when Deckard related the hatching spider memory to Rachael.

Of course there's a good chance that the Director's Cut version of the DVD will be edited in a way to suggest that Deckard is human <grin>

I saw it tonight. A couple of observations...

For the time it took to tell the story, it lagged at times.

All of the actors did a really good job. Ryan Gosling was a good pick for the protagonist.

I feel like the could have taken a great deal of screen time out of the visual story-telling, and devoted it instead to the antagonist. Basically I feel like the movie tried to push "Blade Runner" on you through visuals more than it tried to tell the story of why the antagonist wanted to do what the wanted to do, and how they were going about it.

I have mixed feelings, I enjoyed the movie, but I feel like it could have offered more, story-wise from the antagonist's perspective.

I will say, though, that they did a stunning job on bringing the Blade Runner, cyberpunk future to the viewer. Visually the movie is stunning and immersive.

There, I said it.

Lovely show, Blade Runner 2049, in my opinion. Matching Denis Villeneuve with Ridley Scott was a master-stroke for making a well-paced, dark movie. I'm glad the movie spoke with images more than words too. It was great to sit there for 2.5 hours and just soak in the cinematography without being too disturbed by dialogue.

Rewatched the first one (2007 cut) the day after. Too much talking. Nothing ruins a good sci-fi show like dialogue, since it is going to be nonsense anyway. Denis Villeneuve knows that.

lol - I wonder if you have a point. One thing I will say is the film was definitely a "video Library" film - something for me to run on the second monitor while I play Elite or do other things (and that's not a dig. I'm a curmudgeon, I wouldn't touch about 95% of movies out there with a ten-foot pole).

I saw it yesterday. Wow, great experience. The time just zipped by. The actors were all great. Leto's character, a mumbling eccentric that doesn't seem to be taken seriously until his "luv" means business. I know what some of you mean. Villeneuve made the movie "feel" more like Blade Runner i.e. past Scott, with letting shots linger on the visuals while at the same time being substantive and newly wow and changed enough not to seem too cornycopycat. Kind of missed the tyrell sunlight reflections but the light was fake too, and appreciated the Wallace watery, murky light show variation. I play the original BR or the extended soundtrack sometimes with ED. (BR great, visual & music montages) And "blade runner blues" track helps with real blues, lol. I didn't see it on IMAX , kind of wished I did, maybe will catch it again before its run is over, maybe. yep, movie leaves plenty to point to another sequel, hehe. Hope so!

Yeh i apologize.

If you read back in the thread spoilers have already landed a few times now though.

But i havent given any plot away. these are quotes from random scenes. one of which i think is in one of the official trailers.

I am hoping for an extended DVD release. (i like long films). at least deleted scenes.

The film appears to be doing well in the UK. I guess it is getting a lot of good word-of-mouth here. I'm sure that it will do great when it's released for the home. I went out with a girl with a bad back. I always felt sorry for her when I saw her shifting uncomfortably in her cinema seat. Home viewing is better for long movies. It's such a shame it's going to lose something displayed on the little flat rectangle in folk's homes.
