Blue galaxy?

I could find no good maps comparing the ED skybox with real galaxies, so it's really wild guesses from me.

Is it visible from Sol? If so then we could probably work out RA/DEC based on it's position in relation to known stars and constellations.

As seen from SOL

Blue blob is definitely outside our galaxy.

Looking at Google Sky, I guess my vote is IC 1502. I could be wrong, though. This seems like the most prominent object in that direction not in the Milky Way.

Take a look at the stars around there. Are any of them visible from Sol in Elite? Perhaps you can use this to triangulate the object you're observing in game and see if it lines up with IC 1502.

My problem is that I immediately get lost when looking at this data; I have no idea how to compare it with the ED skybox.

Try this one: https://in-the-sky.org/data/object.php?id=IC1502

The finder chart might be a bit easier to read for picking out stars that are in Elite and see how they line up than the wikisky one?

Gamma Cephei is in-game, also called Alrai, and it seems to be very close to the galaxy in question in the sky from Sol. Is Alrai in the game's skybox close to the blue object you're seeing, Macros? That is a great site, iain666. It's nice that it shows a schematic with constellations and bright stars.

I had a quick check at lunch today and could indeed see a blob that lies south of Polaris. Didn't look so blue to my eye, but I reckon it matches up with the galaxy iain666 referenced above.

IC 1502 looks right

Entering HR 240 & IC 1502 into http://www.wikisky.org does not match. I'm thinking that dismisses IC 1502 as a galaxy candidate.

Edit: Or maybe FD just misplaced a whole galaxy? Mistakes have been known to happen.
Edit: Looked up HR 240 & HD 222448 in the skybox and they're both close to the 'blue galaxy'.

IC 1502 looks like it's the one.

Thank you very much for your assistance, CMDRs :)

IC 1502 is south of Alrai, it can't be it. the closest half bright star to the blue dot is HIP2794 at magnitude 8, the closest galaxy is UGC 481 at a low magnitude 16 and that's closer to HR240 than the blue dot.
I'd add pictures but it's getting very late here (1am). Is this FDevs "star of Bethlehem"?
