Bring Back The Mac Version

Now that there is "Current" and "Legacy" could you please bring back the Mac version of the game, in Legacy mode, so we can continue to enjoy the game on the Mac? I don't care if it isn't the latest and greatest engines ..

I was one of the original Kickstarter backers of Elite:Dangerous, and I backed the game on in a big way because of there being a Mac version. I've since bought Console (XBox) (waste of money that was) and in the end bought a PC so I could continue to play, but fundamentally I'm a Mac user, and I really want to play on Mac .. even if I can't battle the Thargoids in the current war .. I'm happy just exploring, mining and bounty hunting.

My M1 Macbook Pro plays E:D reasonably well in Parallels, but it still isn't the same .. I just want to be able to play NATIVELY on my Mac

Mac users simply didn't spend enough money on the game. End of story. Ultimately, the same probably goes for the console players who recently got cut out of the upgrade loop. Money talks and the PC base is far larger than the others.

IIRC it was the lack of programmable shader support that prevented the Mac version from progressing to Horizons even?

I started playing ED on macOS on my old 2010 Mac Pro with its original HD 5870, then via BootCamp with an RX 580 from Horizons right up to the first Alpha month of EDO - after that on a custom built PC with the same 580…

Much as i would love to be able to play on M1 natively, i seriously doubt it will return, due to the considerably smaller Mac player base and all the work that’d be required to port EDO to Apple Silicon and Metal… it’s a bit like the console versions, but even more niche :(

No-one would be daft enough to bring a niche space game to macOS.

NMS was Windows/Console from launch - despite being just about the most “Mac-like” (fun and friendly and all that) space game out there… good news this port to macOS - they might’ve done it sooner, if not for Apple’s transition to its own chips - makes complete sense on M1+ now :]

Another alpha backer / mac user here. I’ve finally decided to move to PC but I’ve done it using Nvidia Geforce Now, which means I don’t need to buy a gaming PC but it potentially adds a monthly subscription. I’m using mouse and keyboard (PvP fixed weapon config of choice, and I’m starting to see why…).

After a bit of fiddling, the resolution, settings and frame rate are all great. If you’re giving it a go, here are a few tips for getting the best out of it, because the defaults in both the game and geforce are bad and work against each other:

  • Disable camera shake and any similar options in elite - it uses tons of bandwidth, eroding resolution slightly (like any HD stream when bandwidth drops)
  • Set specific resolution in geforce now, to the same resolution in elite. Make sure they’re both fixed, and the same. Don’t use any “variable bandwidth” options in geforce.
  • Enable antialiasing in elite but disable it in geforce. This looks best imo.

I’ve got it set up perfectly now; I can’t see myself doing it any other way. It’s an extra 30 seconds to sign in every time at the start of the session, but - great config, zero hassle, very low cost.
