Bring on the DOOM!

I hate Microsoft with a burning passion so that'd certainly guarantee that FD never get any of my money ever again.
Speaking of which, I still play Minecraft 1.8.9 (pre-Microsoft edition) and host servers for it without a Microsoft account, use Windows 7 (and Manjaro and Debian), and have the LEP for Elite: Dangerous. So yeah, here's hoping I can still play this game at my leisure for the foreseeable future when I feel like it too without bothering with Microsoft. 🤞

I was going to bring this up, at least in the lave radio thread, but couldn't string an argument together. To me its complicated because why would you actually want frontier?

  • They focus only on niche genre games. While this is a strength of no competition and all the benefits that come with, they'll also never be mainstream.
  • They have a headcount of 750 and are based in the UK. Is this expensive relative to competition?
  • They have a proven disability to deliver what players expect (surely a real but significant rift between management / marketing vs customers, only permitted / required by niche genres).
  • Phobia levels of avoidance of any sort of narrative into any of their games. The closest they've come to trying is jwe and that wasn't even close. Frontier have zero experience and ability for any "cinematic" content, if that's required today.

If i was armchairing frontier, the main value would be the planet XX ip and the future contracts. You'd want to redo the ops fundamentally, at least to get them to the point they can look like all the others to mainstream gamers. Frontiers current approach of harsh mvp in genres with no competition and publishing... well its something i guess.

If they are going to be bought out then I hope it's Microsoft. It's a different company under Nadella and Phil. But I don't think that is it. I think they are genuinely trying to figure out where to take the game. And maybe now are forced to confront technical limitations like maybe the game engine or the network infrastructure that may be blocking their ambition. All pure speculation of course

As long as we get glory kills, I'm fine with it. Oh: and a chain saw please.
One of these for the CZs as well.

As I understand (and correct me if i'm wrong) but it also has no servers or persistent world to host, its just battles. By definition, there won't be a grind. Its like saying Overwatch doesn't have a grind. There is a campaign mode (which as i understand can be played coop), which is perhaps akin to C&C or similar type games?

You play though it, then its over right?

Yep, procedural maps/ missions across the worlds of the inner sphere. The campaign missions and some others are hand crafted and you have to build and manage your own merc company.

You can largely go where ever you want to find work and build rep with the various factions. Once the story is over you can keep playing as long as you like but at that point I found I was just hunting specific mechs and equipment for my lance.

It's a fun game, especially with mods but still left me a bit unsatisfied. It needs more mission variety/ some of the better mods integrating into the game, & and clan invasion/ solaris VII, dlc.

I usually start over after the 4th succession war.
Building your company is where the fun is for me, and the variety of mechs makes each career new and different.

Reflecting on my time with Elite Dangerous, it's probably the best space game i've ever played. Not Odyssey, that wasn't for me for eh...multiple reasons. But my times with Horizons, sometimes just watching super massive gas giants from their asteroid rings, or speeding over some god-forsaken planet's surface in the middle of nowhere, or that feeling of approaching a station as the voice chatter comes in, it made me believe in a way no other space game has. You're going to laugh but, only the X4 series can come close for me in that regard, though i have a healthy respect for No Man's Sky as well, it's not as believable.

If Elite does get sold, i hope it will be to a company that wants to do well with it, and not ruin it. Seems strange to me though, that DB would sell something that is so intertwined with his own personal identity, 25 years or more of heritage. It's the British way isn't it, make something amazing, screw it up accidentally, sell it off. Maybe he won't who knows, and there'll be more for Elite in the future.

I pray for Microsoft , please let it be !
Have you seen the complicated set up to download FS 2020? Any game that requires a youtube video with instructions on "how to download this game from Steam (or any other source they use) is a nightmare I'd rather avoid. It's the one, single reason I haven't purchased FS 2020.

WE ARE DOOMED,

i doubt if Microsoft has enough resources to fix this game, I don't think anyone in the development area can taken on a mammoth task has glitch and bug ridden has ED.
They have the resources. I imagine if they took it they'd fix a lot of issues and then get it cross-played. . . .to PC and Xbox. Not so sure if they'd bother with their competition, i.e., PS4/5.

Then CIG will announce they are merging the codebases for ED and SC, and rebooting them as a new product, Elite Citizen.
That WOULD actually get the best of both worlds, i.e., you'd have ship interiors, lots of running through ships from the back door ramp to the bridge up front, etc.

CIG promise to handcraft the whole galaxy with maximum fidelity, they just need another 500000000 years and and a pledge from the whole planet to make it happen.
Yeah, that'll be the issue - it'll never get out of alpha. But the alpha will be nice. Of course, we'll have to buy our ships again.

Maybe we'll get a CG to fight for MS, Sony, and EA to see who gets to buy it.
