Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club: Day of the Dead Stars

Did you know ... that if the route planner has A - B - C - D etc and you manually jump to C, the route to D will not be lost?

Or at least it never used to be. I didn't test for 2.2. No liability accepted if this hint causes you to lose the race...

New submission incoming!

Thanks to AkenBosch for the intermediate system bookmark tip.

This is an awesome race by the way. Yet again Buckyball manages to teach me new things!

P.S. if you head over to Parutis (just a jump away from the start line) you can see one of those new fangled capital ship dock things!

With a time halfway between the previously recorded entries, CMDR Alec Turner moves into 2nd-place in the Top Fuel class.

Stop posting so many great screenshots! My rep tank is drained most of the time anyways, no need to make it worse :D

Intent to play around with FSD supercharging and Toastracks. Nice race idea Jhyrryl, thanks for hosting! :)
My first boost attempt at Jackson's Lighthouse wasn't that nice for Endurance, suffering heat damage (mainly due to very long SC drop times combined with heat gain functional during transitions) as well as magnetoradiationstuff damage from the obligatory neutron star faceplant (perfectly inside the cone). It didn't help that once I finally escaped and jumped there was a transaction server error which put me back into the star
Somehow I managed to escape and supercharge; and 150ly range was an adequate reward for the struggle :D

In other news, I got a new PC at work today ...

I haven't managed a run yet, but I have 3 windows of opportubity over the weekend so should be good for a couple of runs :)

In other news I have a sequel to my previous ruins story...

This morning I noticed how far on the ruins data CG was so thought I'd better drop my scans off this morning or I'll miss out. Logged on and guess who was patrolling the site. Spouting the 2010 lines of "All these worlds...". Result I thought. I had prepared my cobra for silent running and loaded it with missiles. I was attacked by some commanders there in fighters the other day and found the seeker missiles very effective against the fighters. I'd parked up a few km away just in case I got lucky ;)

Said cmdr was in a Taipan with his Corvette parked up. I had a chance against the fighter.

Silent running engaged. Another innocent cmdr was just coming in and receiving the spiel from my target. He hadn't seen me so I armed weapons and waited for a lock. 3 missiles away and one fighter destroyed. Innocent cmdr communicated his gratitude in local. Launched a volley at the Corvette as well just for fun. He came after me in the vette but no chance against my g5 DD cobra. I hid in a canyon and waited for my shields to recharge as I was out of heat sinks. Then went for another pass.

Only severely damaged the fighter this time and the vette was on me with a range of specials straight off but I got away with 33% hull. Taipan couldn't match my speed :)

Revenge is sweet.

Nearly had a fuel rats call when scoopable after scoopable I passed didn't fill my tank - then I remembered I'd turned off the fuel scoop to save heat oops.

Made it to Meene and handed in my 19 scans. Result.

I'm doing a full on stealth DBS build after this :)

Edit: After watching the video, I got the fighter a second time with mines I'd dropped :)

Empty tank (why always?), so I'm silent repping this one [up]+1

Reading your adventures I'm almost tempted of putting together a silent build myself for, reasons...

(Truth be told, I'm a pretty crappy fighter, but that won't stop me from having a good laugh eventually)

I regret to report that my chances of participating have nosedived due to a combination of graphical problems and overheating issues (I might also need support to move my ship somewhere safe after my game crashed leaving one of the Engineer bases; the only thing left for me to try is to upgrade the non-Horizons version of the game and see if that rescues me, which I can try tomorrow, but that probably won't stop my overheating problem). I'm waiting on the next patch to see if that fixes some things and if not then I'll see if the family desktop can manage ok (I had problems even installing the 2.2.01 patch that I don't want to put the family desktop through).
.
Best of luck to everyone on the course this weekend. There's still a chance I might be joining you but if not, have fun and fly fast!

CMDR Alec Turner improves his time to leap frog past CMDR Aken B., bit CMDR Bruski switches ships and jumps even farther ahead!

Looking forward to a successful run by racer1.

Edelgard, sorry you won't be making it. :(

I am finally at the start line ready to go.

Finished my reconnoiter, was in SC to Avagadro when I thought, "fuel? no docking, no scoopables, small fuel tank - not going to work".

I divert to a different station in system, no fuel tanks. I fire up EDDB and see fuel tanks a mere 1.26 ly away. Off I go, dock and... lockdown, no outfitting aaaah.

Next system, has fuel tanks and is not in lockdown :)

Gah, I don't believe it ... I did it AGAIN! I got cocky, thought "right, that time's gonna sit at #1 until the end, my work here is done" and promptly went swanning off to pick up passengers in my Orca.

Congratulations Bruski, that is an excellent time indeed ... 20 seconds tho ... I'm sure I can find 20 seconds from somewhere!

Time submitted. You'll all be pleased to hear I'm doing a good job of making you all look good :)

Hopefully get another couple of runs in...

Forgot to check where the name is on an outpost so that took some finding...
Had an interdiction - damn my quest for fancy shields...
And an early drop out...
Plus various other minor issues lol

Regarding the tricky flying...why are you trying to get a shot from inside of the toaster rack?
Why not? :D

(It was because I was backing out of the station to see the distance, since I wanted to prove you couldn't be that far and be outside. I was wrong. :p)

If a Buckyballer is afraid to scratch some paint, is s/he really a Buckyballer? [big grin]
Paint, what's paint? I don't think my Asp has had paint in months due to Buckyballing. :p

Exploration finished. Announcing a change of ship.

That's gorgeous. But where did you get that paint job?

*checks Alec's jump range*

*checks his Courier's range*

*checks Alec's range again*

*slowly unplugs the hotas, stores it in its box, closes Elite launcher and stares at the crowded desktop, contemplating the void*
Ain't that the truth. I think the Asp is the one for this race, although I'm curious if an engineered Anaconda could win by making that 85 LY jump in one hop.

First attempt: interdicted (abort)

Second attempt: emergency stop while trying to planetary brake a white dwarf (abort)

Third attempt: going really well until - unable to plot route, maximum distance exceded

Huh? What followed was literally about 10 minutes of just drifting outside Vasilyev Vision while I tried to figure out why the hell I couldn't plot a route to my next bookmark, or indeed anywhere apparently.

http://orig09.deviantart.net/4872/f/2016/174/d/0/travalo_by_greenanimator-da7f5zc.gif

Then it dawned on me.

The route plotter can't plot multi-jump routes featuring a boosted first jump.

w. t. actual f.

Looks like it's back to the drawing board for a re-think on my route.

This is actually the #1 reason I abandoned the iCourier. That plotting is SO messed up. :( You have my sympathy.

Great, now that's how I have to feel too! [mad]

Oh man. That's so beautifully perfect. I'm watching it again and again....

Congratulations Bruski, that is an excellent time indeed ... 20 seconds tho ... I'm sure I can find 20 seconds from somewhere!

I'm sure you can! If you need ideas, I recently made friends with a pro twitch streamer, and he convinced me to start streaming my races, so I have done so here https://www.twitch.tv/polarbruski/v/98971480 Skip to 15:00 for the start of the race. Youtube is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eH9K4zterSs But doesn't have the chat history.

He and a few of his friends were in the chat, so I spent a decent amount of time responding to their questions, they're mostly new to Elite, so they'll be basic to you guys. Enjoyed the experience though, and might start streaming more runs, possibly to the detriment of any secrets I might have. :p

Lavecon 2016 ... roll on 2017

Yup, that jump's the clincher alright ... I'm so damn close to being able to make it ... maybe if I just run of fumes? (but then of course I'd have to refuel). I also tried rewriting my route plotter to ignore total distance and just try to find a route with all jumps under 80ly .... nothing doing.

Man what a pity...the Asp may have been the one for this race, but the Courier sure could hold itself....I think it could still come out on top of the ladder (or at least jump on a solid 2nd place...hypothetical apologies Alec!), and I was in the process of determining this, when an unlucky overcharging maneuver left my fsd charged but...charged 2 ly short of my planned destination (usual charge is around 42 ly from the original 27, the system was 38 ly away...the fsd charged only to 36)...[mad]...

And this ended my only available attempt before deadline...next time, next time. *shakes fist*.

Ah bummer. :( This has been a race for danger and death, I myself saw the insurance screen twice, and cancelled one run because of dropouts.

I really have my doubts about the iCourier though. According to my numbers, she'd need an extra 4 jumps compared to the AspE, so 3 minutes total. You'd need to save 15 seconds on each bump n' run, and another 15 seconds on the docking. This just seems unlikely, even at 777m/s. The 500m/s Asp though, that scares me. Sugar Glider tops out at around 370, and that's after replacing her anemic 4D thrusters with 5A ones (unengineered, because I haven't had much gameplay time lately).
