Well a huge thank you to Aken, who offered to look over the banner for me, and made a ton of changes to it that I wouldn't have been able to do! One minor tweak at the end and I think we're there, it certainly looks much more race banner worthy now!

Yup, that's looking slick now! [yesnod]

I'm getting things ready to head off for the week. I think I have most things in place and I'll try and get the race thread up either next Friday, or Saturday if not. Here's a link to the original image for the signature if you want to download/use it.

Ok, tonight I will start flying back to take part.
I hate you. ¬_¬

Shocking! Don't any of you have second accounts so that you can take part in races even when you're out exploring, like I have recently!

Nah it's cool enjoy Alec, and thanks for coming back Maya, love you [squeeeee]

I've just gotten back and the race thread is up

It's late, it's been a very long day, I've probably made mistakes (apologies for just swiping some things from previous race threads ;)). I'll check it tomorrow.

Can my race be extended to midnight 27th of August (Monday night) do you reckon? Alec saying that he might be back in time, the race surprisingly being featured in the newsletter and retweeted by ED account, and the fact it's a Bank Holiday in the UK...

Any objections?

*edit* Ignore me, it may well have been confusion created by me. Race finishes at midnight Monday 27th now.

Yay! I will try to break my WoW relpase long enough to run. :D

Sorry, it looks like I must be on a bit of a hiatus from Elite at the moment, don't worry, I've not joined the whiners, I've just not actually played since the previous race.

I'm sure I'll be back soon, I'll certainly try to make it to the next race - and I'd like to make a Python/Krait run through the Black Riband II - just to give Bruski some competition and stop the record being 3 hours! :D

I don't see it like you should be sorry for anything, no one of us has signed any obligation to stick constantly around here. As far as I know at least. :p

Looks like I've been on some kind of hiatus too, personal life issues are preventing me from finding some quality time to spend with the game, and even when I have an hour or two of relative quiet it's hard to be in the mood to "play" at the moment, but I always hope to be in for the next race! (here's to easier times ahead, eventually)

As for joining the whiners, given the recent update from Zac...how dare you not being outraged as any proper "player" should be, game's definitely as good as dead! :D

LOL ... yup, slightly guilty of perhaps overreacting to that post myself ... goddam it tho', I am gutted that the ice planets they showed us at both the Expo and again at Lavecon aren't now coming this year. For the first time since the game launched I do feel like I've been cheated and/or let down.

Anyway, this ain't the place ... really sorry to hear of the continued hardships in your life Aken, hope things turn around for you! [yesnod]

.. and Raiko ... like Aken says, no obligation to play the game ... hope you'll both return to race again tho' ... it's not the same around here without all the old Buckyball crew!

On more race related news ... I think I'd like to book a slot in the 2nd half of October for a race I'd like to run in conjunction with Sagittarius Eye magazine and the SPVFA.

Don't worry, you're not getting rid of me that easily. This is still my game for life. Hopefully I'll be at the next race.

If Drakhyr reads this, I'd prefer to run my next race in December or January - with a provisional title of Seven Sisters Speedway.

Since the race calendar is empty at the moment, I'd like to get a sanity check on an idea for a short race, possibly a Midweek Madness event. There are still some things that I still need to do so I thought it best to ask before I spend the next couple of weeks searching the Bubble for suitable locations.
.
The idea is to have a Triathlon, with stages involving the SRV, main ship and a SLF. It would mean a regulation Keelback(!) with a SLF, probably the Taipan as this is not specific to the superpowers (although I have found a starport other than Jameson Memorial that stocks all three human fighters). An Unlimited category would permit use of the Guardian SLFs (although I have yet to test whether they can do exactly what I want).
.
The first stage would be to start in the SRV with ship dismissed and needing to drive across some reasonably interesting terrain to reach a surface port. This would be moderately high-g (around 1g to 2.5g surface gravity) so driving is more evenly balanced, otherwise the time gap in between those who can tilt-boost and those who struggle will be so great that the rest of the race would hardly matter. TO DO: find a suitable surface base.
.
The second stage would be in the main ship travelling to the third location where the SLF will be used. This stage can be any length, travelling across the bubble if necessary. White dwarf and neutron boosting would be allowed in the Regulation Keelback and anything except FSD synthesis and Guardian FSD boosters would be allowed in Unlimited.
.
The third location would be a ringed surface city. The objective here would be to launch the SLF outside the no fire zone of the city and to fly through one of the tunnels in the ring (I've checked today that the Taipan fits, so the other human fighters will fit as well). There might be an altitude requirement to deploy the SLF if I can find a suitable city situated near canyons etc. to race through, as otherwise this is not much of a test of flying skill. TO DO: check the Guardian SLFs can fit through the tunnel; find a suitable surface city (I have a candidate but would prefer one with more interesting surroundings).
.
Another option would be to swap stages 1 and 3 and start in the SLF and fly through some interesting terrain before passing through the tunnel in the city wall. This would then mean that the SRV section would be a race from the surface port to either a certain landmark nearby or to reach a set distance from the base.
.
Any thoughts or comments?

Can I suggest Keyes Beacon in the Sigma Pegasi system. It's on planet 3 which has a gravity of 1.2g and is one of those big round city-like planetary bases. I recently took part in an SRV race there which started 50km away on the opposite side of the crater which the base is sat right next to. That's obviously too long for your purposes and is a whole race in itself but you could perhaps start the race from the nearest edge of the crater rather than the furthest edge (e.g. a specified distance away from the base). As you can see from around the 6min mark in the following video there's some pretty "interesting" terrain between the edge of the crater and the base plus it's always really fun going through the entrance tunnels to these city bases.

Mind you, you might still want to "up" the gravity a bit since, although full "fliving" was difficult, as you can see I still made a pretty good stab at it.
