[BUG] Auto-Exposure is far too sensitive

o7 CMDRs

While this has been mentioned in the replies of some other threads, I still wanted to highlight this issue specifically.

Auto-Exposure is far too sensitive. It is especially apparent while in camera-mode, your ship or your SRV. Certain viewing-angles will trigger the automatic exposure / gamma-correction, which in return overly darken or lighten the contents of your screen. The lights in the cockpit of your ship for example, are enough for the auto-exposure to react, meaning that everything gets darkened at all times.

Below is a link to a video showcasing the problem via the free camera and my carrier.

Here is an image showing the same scene, at the same location from different viewing angles. Note how in the first part the background is pitch black, but in the second part (when I look up and away from the dashboard lights) you can see the asteroid field just fine.

Here I got another two shots, one from Horizons and one from Odyssey, just to compare. Well, I didn't really have to mark them did I...

It is safe to say that without that bug, Odyssey would finally have nearly the same brightness levels as Horizons did.
I suspect that this issue is a main cause for all the other issues regarding Odysseys overall darkness, therefore I would like to have it fixed :D

Apparently, lighting and gamma issues are fixed on a case by case scenario. EDO hangars are sort of separated from concourse, from settlements, from cockpit in space and from cockpit in stations, from rings, from planetary surfaces and so on.

Horizons seemd to me to have a really unitary (and universally valid) illumination and gamma setting

They’re obviously trying to sweep it under the rug by making it prohibitively annoying to report, despite the many reports with testing and evidence. The broken lighting is very obvious to anyone bothering to play the game. Log into Horizons and fly around, then do the same in Odyssey. Obviously broken.

It's looking more and more like EDO's tech just isn't as good as ED's at a fundamental level. The auto-correction shown in OP's video suggests the problem is deep enough that they are resorting to bandaids.

From an outside perspective, it feels like the new renderer was programmed by inexperienced dev team compared to EDH. It seems to struggle with fundamental issues not present in EDH.

I did not buy Odyssey, so I will not vote for your bug report. It is not important to me that they fix it . Now, PP on the other hand.....

Except when they merge the game again in the coming months and you get to enjoy the amazing new visuals (and performance) in Horizons too. Have fun with that.. 😎

I would be inclined to agree; the new renderer just feels like it has too many holes needing plugging to have been programmed by a half competent team. A half decent engine doesn't need 6 months of post-launch fixing just to work properly.

Well, they should have it all fixed up by then. Right?

My bet is that the high quality talent left. FD managers cut pay for new hires down in a bid to satisfy the Stonk Overlords and end up replacing the talent that created ED with fresh talent of lesser capabilities who probably can't even work competently with the existing code. Probably unable to even comprehend much of the previous tech, they decide to replace it with newer code that they will be able to comprehend, only to realize it isn't as good way too late and are stuck trying to accomplish ED's original feats with both lesser code and higher demands. The regression to using heightmaps is a clear sign that EDO's planetary tech is more rudimentary. I feel for them. The stress has to be terrible. I would hate to be tasked with working on/improving code that was above my capabilities, which there is a hell of a lot of!

If the Glassdoor reviews of ex employees are anything to judge FDev by, apparently they hire people who have nearly zero coding experience so that they can pay them less than career coders, and then basically force them to actively learn coding on the job. Turnout also seems really high and this is likely why.

Therefore I have a hard time believing FDev was unaware of these fundamental graphic issues, that were pointed out by the community. The gamma and the performance both is obviously off. So either way Fdev makes a weird impression.
