Build our own Settlements

Would any Cmdrs be interested in getting Brewer Corp to build our own Settlements or even Star ports so we can control what is traded there, etc ?

I would be willing to contribute weekly/monthly credits for this to happen and peeps who like to carry out mining, etc could use it as a Market place to sell their wares and commodities.

Just a thought !

As much as I like being my own boss in the game to the extent I am not keen on doing missions this is not something that would appeal to me in the slightest.

I still hold to the original view of Elite where we are only important to ourselves and our ships owning and running our own settlements is too far from that for me.

for you squadron yes please, we all hoped base building was a thing... we got told no...
they could be telling little pokies of course

It was just a rumor from an old leaked roadmap wasn't it? Nothing was confirmed or denied by frontier at the time if I recall.

Also on the point of building our own bases/settlements...................... why do we keep collecting Building Schematics. They have no use at present ?

Why are we collecting anything that isn't used as an upgrade / engineering component? Or Raws and Manufactured / Data that have no purpose?
At least the EDO surplus can be sold for credits! (or traded in the FC bar, of course)

Frontier said that base building wasn't part of Odyssey shortly before the Odyssey release, about the time that their trailers were showing pictures of NPC surface bases.

That's not the same as "it will never happen", of course - but I imagine finding something non-cosmetic which static bases can do that Fleet Carriers couldn't do better would be tricky to justify the development time.

It'd get too cluttered. There are already too many Fleet Carriers (essentially a player-owned starport) and Odyssey settlements cluttering up the system maps.
Certain places would look cluttered, but 99,95% of the Galaxy haven't even been visited by someone yet.

Base building was going to be an Odyssey feature but got pulled when the decision was made to just release straight from alpha. They had already rolled it out to the client and their backend/website. We knew it was coming way before that as it was part of the Watson leak. So there are various leftovers in the game like the building schematics reminding us of the Odyssey we were supposed to get.

still might get it if most of the work was already started and partially done. (edit, they did tease that something never done before was coming....and shooting on foot thargoids i dont think would fall into that bucket since it's just shooting an on foot npc)

It just wont be all that functional and integrated into the rest of the game any more than carriers are. So the purpose of them would mostly be aesthetic.

I still want to have my own dredger. Non persistent, directly flyable, but crafted in parts instead of purchased so each one is unique in look and stats. But they can all eat ships (the maw being one of the only commonalities)

That gives us the answer, base building is allowed but only 1 per system which has to have been unvisited prior to the base being built.
Guess where everyone would build their ruddy bases.
First guess is in the system that issues the license, second guess on the same planet as one of the initial engineers, third guess Spoihaae XE-X d2-9 A 1.

Cue an endless series of "fossilised" systems no-one can build in, like decommissioning or abandoned carriers. Active players will have to position bases further and further out from populated space, resulting in fewer visitors, trade etc. As it is, at least systems can carry lots of FCs which are, essentially, player bases.
