Ok! I am here to get off the subject of ats real quick! I would LOVE the blue spotted tree monitor! They would JUST make the habitat cut off and not end up in exhibit!

My top priorities for animals groups:
Canids - Maned Wolf, Bush Dog, Red Fox
Felids - Sumatran Tiger, East African Lion, Ocelot, Serval, Caracal, Pallas's Cat and Fishing Cat
Primates - Northern White-Cheeked Gibbon, Black Howler Monkey, Geoffroy's Spider Monkey, Bolivian Squirrel Monkey, Francois Langur, Golden Lion Tamarin, Emperor Tamarin, Common Marmoset and Pygmy Marmoset
Ungulates - Greater Kudu, Grevy's Zebra, Blue Wildebeest, Red River Hog, Impala, Bontebok, Klipspringer, Aoudad, Markhor, Sichuan Takin, Collared or Chacoan Peccary, Eastern Black Rhinoceros, Masai Giraffe, Dama Gazelle, Sitatunga, Addax

Tortoises are a category I would like to see expanded. Some species seem more logical to include, but overall I would just like to see some more variation here.
I think they aren't popular because they all tend to behave the same way, but I'd definitely love to see the leopard tortoise.

I also want the Greek tortoise (a common pet species, but also common in zoos) but they're pretty small. I'd like them as an exhibit animal, but I imagine the broad 'tortoise' group has been relegated to habitat status like the crocodiles and monitor lizards.

I think a major reason why people are hesitant towards adding tortoises to their habitat or exhibit animal wish lists is because they aren't sure if the species they have in mind would be better off as habitat or exhibit. Since we only have the two largest species in the game, and they are both undersized, people don't have a good reference point to make an educated guess. If Frontier adds a smaller tortoise at some point and people get to see how that works out, I believe more lists will include tortoises of different sizes.

I would actually like to see it as a habitat animal if possible since it is one of the species you can keep outdoor in Europe for most of the year.
The Greek tortoise is in a tough spot to be honest, in terms of habitat compatibility. They might marginally be too small to be habitat animals. For reference they would be around the size of juvenile Galapagos tortoises in the game (smaller than Aldabra juveniles), and their juveniles would be too miniscule. Technically giant tortoise hatchlings are tiny as well, but the game has the freedom to portray them as older juveniles. As for Greek tortoise juveniles, even a "half-grown" model might be too small.

For these reasons, I would say the lower size limit for habitat tortoises would roughly be around the size of a radiated tortoise (about the size of Aldabra juveniles). They would still have oversized juveniles, about the size of subadults, but I think it would be possible to pull off with the current mechanics.

As for exhibit tortoises, I'm seeing a recent trend towards the Egyptian tortoise on the exhibit meta wish list, possibly due to them being one of the smallest species (8-12 cm straight carapace length), as well as being critically endangered. We have two arid exhibit box designs already, so this one seems to be the best candidate.

Asian golden cats would be the first cat species with lots of coat color variants!

And one of the few animals in game that show obvious coat color variety...
(Wolves should have been one of them, but alas...)

That's what I am talking about, they are a smaller cat with amazing coat variety unlike any animal currently in game!

I think the thing about these sorts of threads is that everyone has some (and usually) different picky/not picky criteria - like I don't care much about the classic 'popular' zoo animals (lions, most bears, giraffes etc) but love the less popular ones (I adore the african wild dog, for example) and really want to see more smaller animals in the game. Only the very largest of zoos have large number of big animals - they're very expensive to keep, most have one or two stars and the rest of their collection are smaller, less expensive animals, or regional ones.

To be fair, I think after the Conservation pack, adding in a leopard and a gibbon, there's not many or any classic popular zoo animals left (excluding marine animals and flying birds). A case might can be made for the Emu, but that's really about it. So to me, having threads like these is going to be natural at this point. If they all seem to run together that's the nature of the beast, no pun intended. In a way though, that can encourage people to be more and less picky, depending on how you look at it. Some people may be more picky now because there's going to be individual wants based on specific ideas of what should be represented (why there's a discussion about the Asian Golden Cat vs. the Fishing Cat). But some people may also be less picky because all the big wants are now done and they may just want more general representation of certain groups (more ungulates, more animals from Oceania, a third penguin/tiger/otter etc).

For this thread, to no one's surprise, I think the main ungulates I'm wanting here are the Red River Hog, Bighorn Sheep, Masai Giraffe and the Markhor. Looking over my current top 25, that's all that's left for me in that group. Believe it or not I'm not opposed to quite a few other ungulate additions, the exception being antelopes and specifically African antelopes, as they're already very well represented.

As mentioned in the starting post, I'm also of the same mind about carnivores - I want quite a few of them but I want specific species. 2 bears, 4 candids and 3 mustelids are in my top 25, but they're all quite specific. For example, Bat-Eared Fox. I know the biggest fox want is the Red Fox, and they're on my larger list, but it's not a case of me just wanting another fox. I specifically want the Bat-Eared Fox.

I think one the biggest general group for me would be marsupials. I have a few specific wants, like a Wombat (but even there, I'm fine with any of the three species), the Tasmanian Devil, the tree Kangaroo (again, any species works for me), and the Grey Kangaroo, but after that, I'd just like some more general representation.

The other big group for me would be rodents. An Old World Porcupine is the standout want for me, specifically the Crested Porcupine, but I'd be alright with any species of an Old World Porcupine. I may be leaning on the Patagonian Mara for the next most wanted, but otherwise, I'm open to just more rodents. Granted, many of them would not be a fit for habitats due to the small size, but there's other options.

A final group for me would be non-flying birds. The Red Crowned Crane really opened the door for this. I do have my specific wants with a Shoebill Stork, Secretary Bird and Scarlet Ibis, but overall I'd just really like to see some growth in that area.

Editing to add - Primates are a weird group for me. I've never been a huge wanter of primates and the 4 that I would consider essential all were in the base game (Gorilla, Chimpanzee, Orangutan, and Mandrill). I'm open to another Gibbon of course, and the Howler Monkey, but they're both at the lower end of my top 25. I know this goes again much of the wishes for this, but even if we didn't get those two, I'm fine with not getting another primate at all.

While i agree with a lot of what you said, i cant about the important zoo animals.
In fact there are many very important very common animals still not in the game, so i thought why not translate one of the most usefull sources into english over here?
This is the Top 100 or in this case for readibility sake top 70 most common animals in the EAZA according to zootierliste. Sadly this feature is only in german and not the english version and tracks by subspecies, so for example the central european red deer is just one of many red deer subspecies ranked seperatly.
Im also gonna mark animals in the game with a ☆.
But lets begin.

As you can see, even subtracting the aviary birds, this list is quite depressing compared to what we got in the game, with just 10 out of 70, or 62 when you subtract the aviary birds.
And while yes, their are many domestic animals among them, for me that just hammers home the point of how criminally underrepresented they are in the game rn.
Petting zoo pack for the next scenary pack would be quite dope, ngl

@KönigDerKaffeebohnen - Fair point especially about the farm/petting zoo type animals. I really did not realize how many there were that were common in zoos. I think a petting zoo/farm animal pack would work well for scenery pack. While we got some things that might apply in the last pack, there's quite a bit more to add in. I would say this would work for an animal pack, but in all honestly there really isn't a star animal among them, just my opinion of course.

and tracks by subspecies, so for example the central european red deer is just one of many red deer subspecies ranked seperatly.
I hope Zootierliste updates this page with the ability to add filters like taxonomy and conservation status, as well as the ability to turn off subspecies tracking. Also the ability to see ranks beyond the top one hundred. They already have the data, doubt it should be too hard to make. They could also add species ranking to individual profiles.
