Bye bye auto dock and super cruise assist!

The legal speed limit is 99 .... you need to fly at approaching that kind of speed ideally.

While you are learning, I think the landing gear down restricts your speed anyway. You can take off from the pad by using vertical thrusters (that's R on my keyboard), then move forward to avoid banging into anything above your head.

Reminds me of docking back in the Robigo smuggling days in a stupidly fast Asp. Boost at the slot doing close to 400, then as you cross the threshold, a quick FA-off 180 flip, FA back on, gear out, cargo scoop airbrake out, scream loudly and try not to impale yourself on the spike at the back of the station. Because silent running and heatsinks are for wimps

Well maybe not bye bye, I’m keeping them around, but I’ve just made two successful docks (and it’s so much fun) with auto dock and auto launch turned off, and also, turned off super cruise auto throttle and am flying on my own steam! Only 20 hours in. Every time I played this game before I couldn’t get past the tutorial because I couldn’t dock, this auto dock saved my butt and made me enjoy the game, now I’m enjoying it EVEN MORE with auto dock turned off because landing is so fun!
What does Supercruise Assist actually do apart from slow you down as you jump into a system (why I’m keeping it around.) I don’t notice any difference now it’s turned off.
You are lovely

I never use either and haven't for a very long time.

I've posted before on the DC trying to kill me on numerous occasions, maybe because it's got some primitive base code from you know who...

I was talking to my friend today, telling him about the game. He played the original Elite! He’s getting the game immediately. But he said in the old Elite (maybe 1995 edition not the 1984 one) you started off with no docking computers and had to really struggle, and then could buy one later, so it’s kind of reversed now, but I think the new way is better because the initial difficulty of the game the first times I tried it put me off, but this way I think will put less people off. Such a great game. Hopefully the new walking around Odyssey expansion won’t detract from development of the space game.

...and, as @uncle bulgaria mentioned, back then there was NO Yaw! When I rediscovered Elite (in Elite: Dangerous) I was so worried about being out of practice of getting into the mail slot that I dragged my feet to start playing. When I started ED, I couldn't figure out why it was so EASY to dock!

Try approaching and lining up without using Yaw (no cheating!) - you'll see. Your friend will cruise right in without difficulty.

Docking computer? What for?

Have fun, CMDRs!

It's really been 'tweaked' to operate extremely well (and reliably) now. When you engage, it doesn't hang about (except at busy ports where you might end up in a queue) ... engages boost speed to the slot, then slows to legal speed and a very efficient landing on the pad. It's hard to beat it manually.
:) But I respect not using it ... after all, even space for small modules can be valuable.

and super cruise keeps your ship focussed on the target (where you have to go)
manually (let it go fly itself) the target will sometimes get out of focus and you have to steer every now and then

That's my experience also - if you activate it at a correct time, main benefit imho is you can watch the landing in cinematic style often with good views of nearby planets, always nice when people are watching you play, or just for your own enjoyment :)

So I’ve realised you can bump into those lights on sticks poking out of the mail slot. There was me assuming I’d just pass through them. But I’m now getting the hang of using things like side-to-side thrust in combo with twisty-thrust to really speed up my manoeuvres. My HOTAS is arriving Monday so I will have to learn to fly and dock all over again!

I wouldn't still be playing the game if Docking Computer and Supercruise Assist had not been added, to be honest. I'm quite capable of docking and dropping manually but I'd much prefer to let the computer do it whilst I do other stuff. Maybe if I'm in a big rush I might dock manually from time to time but after 1000 hours I mostly feel like manual docking is a time-consuming chore.

I believe all players should choose to use or not use the assists based on their own preference. It certainly doesn't have anything to do with whether you're a veteran player, or a new player.

However, Supercruise Assist actually allows for the fastest journeys because it allows you to use manual throttle to perform a 'fast drop'.

So hang on let me get this straight: supercruise on, point your ship in the right direction, and you just fly there automatically and never overshoot?
Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but you do have to actually engage the supercruise from the left panel.
When I was starting out I had no idea that's how it worked for the longest time so I figured it was useless and just took it off my ship.

Oh lol I guess I’ve never been using it!!!

I agree. It’s up to you. And totally there would be such automated systems in the year 3306AD if we can do driverless cars in 2020AD. Hell we live in the future now. We just need the ROYAL SPACE FORCE because we can’t let the Yanks dominate space.
