Calgary Zoo

Check out post #10 for my updated overview of the zoo

Lets head to the land of maple syrup and polite people - canada! Continuing my trend of innovative north american zoos brings me to the city of calgary, the Calgary zoo which is roughly 120 acres big with 38 notable habitats is a very different take compared to the oregon zoo. Both zoos are similar in regards to the collection with sizeable north american and african habitat zones - however calgary zoo boasts a fine collection of asian habitats which ill be excited to get my hands on.

The real life zoo

Penguin Plunge - an indoor penguin habitat with habitats on both sides of a walkway. Also an warm weather penguin habitat is outside at the entrance

Planet Entrance RETURNS

Over the past week awaiting the addition of the twlight dlc for oregon zoo, i have managed to slowly landscape way too much to make an underground entrance as the main highway runs right over it. A long , unique entrance that takes 2 entire mintues to walk to reach the first habitat area was interesting but both annoying at the same to build.

Down we go.... - got to love the custom media of course

More ticket booth areas, this is actually a train station irl but the train part is way too much work for what it offers

And finally we reach the actual zoo. Obvious work in progress

Heres the overview, the highway is planned to be detailed at somepoint

Penguin Plunge: Gift shop and Penguin cafe

As soon as you exit the long underground tunnel to the zoo, there is a pretty large gift shop to the left of the path. This is the main zoo gift shop which also has a small cafe inside. Work on this building was fun, lots of modern materials with extensive glass, white metal beams, stained wood and a custom built roof. The wagon rental is the info stand, along with lots of tables outside the gift shop because there is no seating inside this building - a grab and go basically.

Lets head inside the building, this is of course a high effort attempt at replicating the inside of the gift shop which came off a huge suprise. Lots of bright colors, suspened flying birds, static leafs on roof supports, and just overall wow. (indoor pictures are edited to bring out colors)

Penguin Plunge - African Penguins

We finally have some animals added to the zoo, this is the entrance habitat for the calgary zoo. A habitat of 14 african penguins make this half rocky pool, half grassy mound their diverse home. Although not as impressive as some entrance penguin habitats like say woodland park zoo , it still is nice enough however the african penguins are not the star of penguin plunge - wait until the next development update for that. I know the large building is offputting really, but real zoos cant really hide their buildings with a huge rock wall all the time.

Alright everyone let's bring back this thread in preparation for my recreation project of 2024!

The zoo will be restarted completely with my knowledge of recreation building being transferred from the failed attempt at conquering the San Diego Zoo, the mighty california zoo with over 100 habitats is simply impossible to tackle in any way at least in this version of the game, who knows maybe a planet zoo 2 may make large recreations possible.

So let's start again shall we?

Screenshot_20231208_003559_Write on PDF.jpg

The zoo is split into 2 distinct portions - The North and south, like 2 islands for the zoo. To take advantage of this, I am actually going to split the zoo across 2 maps allowing for great attention to detail and able to maintain high performance for me (less chance of ruining another computer 😅). The way this will work is using those bridges to my advantage. Both sides of the river are covered in a good layer of foliage which obstructs view in the other so the split between maps will naturally flow.

The North

Lets talk about the north of the zoo first. This is the main entrance with the large parking lot, space on the map will allow me to build the connecting road, parking lot entrance, parking lot and the full entrance into the zoo under a highway. Building a full highway is going to be a challenge but a fun one nonetheless. The entrance for guests goes under the highway and leads into the North portion of the zoo.

The north portion has an impressive penguin complex for the entrance habitats. This includes an outdoor habitat for warm climate penguins and an indoor building featuring cold weather penguins. This will be a standard north american 'walkthrough' penguin habitat where we can see penguins on both sides of the guest path.

Calgary-Zoo..jpg

We will also see full utilisation of the gift shop features with the large gift shop and cafe beside the penguin habitats. Past the entrance habitat area, we will enter the newest area of the zoo that just finished construction this month! The new wild canada habitat area is the sole habitat complex of the north and an exciting one at that.

20231130-Calgary-Zoo-Polar-Bears-CL-0417-960x639.jpg

Polar bears have finally returned to the zoo after a long absence. Wild Canada has been redesigned with the polar bears in mind, there are no longer bison or prairie dogs in this area but instead a very large Polar bear habitat with deep diving pools, running water streams, and lots of viewing areas for the guests as they travel around the habitat. We will also come across bighorn sheep, mountain goat, reindeer, musk ox, river otter, a walkthrough owl exhibit, gray wolves, moose, whooping cranes, bears, cougar and even porcupine. A large area with iconic animals to represent Canada at its best.

P1310419.JPG

The other portion of the north is the prehistoric Park. Here there are no animal habitats but instead a walking trail around the 'badlands' of Canada. These badlands were a major source of Dinosaur discoveries, just about an hours drive from the city of calgary. So naturally Dinosaur heritage is quite strong in the region and dinosaurs are always a successful way to make kids excited. Ingame of course, we will see Dinosaur fossils instead of cast statues like in the real zoo since I can't build those, and the workshop is full of lovely Fossil statues.

38953144-animatronic-dinosaurs-exhibits-at-the-prehistoric-park-section-of-the-calgary-zoo-on-...jpg

The South

Now onto the actual island of the south, as already mentioned this will be on a second map to take full advantage of details while not being overly concerned about piece count. This can be views as the bulk of the zoo as we can find roughly 30 habitats dedicated to africa and eurasia. Yes eurasia! What a great time for a eurasia pack to come out, although funnily enough only one animal is featured. Starting out in the south, the african area is dominated by 2 very large buildings to keep these animals nice and warm in the rather cold winters of canada.

CalgaryZoo279.jpg

Mixed savanna habitat with giraffe, ostrich, zebra and others, indoor crested porcupine habitat, hippopotamus habitat, lions and a lemur walkthrough are the core parts of Africa. A typical savanna display just with a very large indoor building to change it up. The second indoor building features an african aviary (pretty much the only bird heavy area of the entire zoo) and habitats for primates - Mandrill and Gorilla are the key habitats. The primates do have both good sized indoor and outdoor areas next to a dirt yard featuring some red river hogs.

P1310853.JPG

The Dorothy harvie gardens is the central portion of the south. We will find simple grassy habitats for rhea and alpaca along with a peccary habitat and some flamingos. The main attraction here is the butterfly gardens - indoor walkthrough exhibits can be used for these greenhouses featuring tons of different butterflies.

CalgaryZoo355.jpg

The final area of the zoo is called exploration asia, this is our eurasia section. The first section is the old elephant turned old giant panda house now a mixed habitat for malayan tapir and lar gibbons. Komodo dragon and bactrian camels can be found nearby.

Calgary-Gibbons-scaled.jpg

The second part of exploration asia features a great mix of hoofstock and typical Asian animals in average habitats - we can find the only Japanese serow in North america, siberian musk deer, wild boar, markhor, Japanese macaque, snow leopard, red panda, pallas cat, and siberian tiger. Here is also the smaller West entrance which allows guests to enter and exit from two directions of the zoo.

CalgaryZoo376.jpg

Let's aim for first progress in early January of next year which will start around the north entrance and my first video of showing how a recreation actually starts from a blank map. A early next year estimate allows me time to plan the zoo thoroughly including gather references on the very new wild canada and acquire a new computer in time to start building again!

Real Zoo Overview: Zoo Entrance

Alright everyone, let's continue my usual trend of introducing the area of the zoo that is upcoming, this helps us all to see what the real zoo is like beforehand and sort of like a mini tour of everyone unfamilar with the zoo. This zoo entrance is quite unique in both the area from the parking lot to the zoo gates and even the entrance animal habitats.

Map view of the entrance:
Untitled design.jpg

A brief look at the zoo shows a very urban feel to the zoo, which is great! Creating an urban zoo is a challenge and when done right it feels very realistic compared to the usual zoo in the middle of nowhere. Of course, the piece count will not be low since there is an entire highway between the parking lots and zoo entrance but thankfully this zoo is going to be spread across 2 maps meaning the piece heavy entrance will not affect performance that much.

Entrance features:
  1. Parking lots - A section of the parking lots will be built for guest access to the zoo. There will be an upper and lower parking lot if that isn't easy to tell from the picture.
  2. Entrance Plaza - A spacious entrance plaza greets guests to the zoo, here we will find the zoo sign, a walkthrough egg art piece, and a tunnel leading to the zoo.
  3. Zoo Station - Here's the unique part of the entrance! An entire train station in the middle of a busy highway. In real life, trains run to and from the city downtown with a stop for the zoo. We will find the ticket booths in this building before continuing onto the actual zoo entrance.
  4. The actual entrance - After walking a while through tunnels under the highway, we reach the actual zoo. A large gift shop and cafe building and a education building make up the space here.
  5. Penguin Plunge - The animal habitats for the entrance. We will find 3 habitats here, one is an outside penguin habitat for humboldt penguins and the other 2 are inside a large building are 2 king penguin (and friends) habitats with a guest path in between them - basically a walkthrough penguin habitat!

Parking Lots:

Honestly there is nothing special about parking lots to mention. Spaces for cars + path to enter zoo = amazing, An essiental part of a recreation that is probably one of the boring parts of building a zoo. Good thing is that I can keep the parking lots small but still represent the entrance well enough (unlike a certain california zoo...)

frne4J.jpg

Entrance Plaza:

A nice enough plaza greets guests to the zoo, here we have an egg, flag, zoo signage with animal sculptures and a tunnel that leads guests to the zoo. The egg seems to be the most odd part of this area, known as the "Egg - The unity of diversity" which is supposed to showcase unity and diversity of life on earth - a fitting art piece for a zoo focused on conservation.

IMG_68805.JPG

Zoo Station:

The zoo station is a train station... in the middle of the actual zoo entrance. Well it's unique and will look great ingame. The train station is located in the middle of a busy highway that provides quick access to the zoo. The entrance itself goes under the highway via a tunnel that opens up in the zoo station where guests will purchase tickets for the zoo. Then another tunnel goes under the remaining half of the highway to lead into the zoo itself. The extra special part of this part of the entrance is a city skyline, the attempt to mimic a city skyline that is supposed to be 2.5 maps away in distance will be a challenge but entirely do-able with my skillset.

View of the highway, train station, and city skyline in the background:

Inside the zoo station, a path descends onto the ground level where the zoo tunnels meet the ticket booths:
main-entrance-area-from.jpg

Zoo tunnels that take guests from the plaza to the zoo:
IMG_7633.jpg

The actual entrance:

Once we have travelled through the plaza, tunnels and station we reach the actual zoo. Here we will find a large gift shop and cafe with all the amenties for guests like toilets and info stands, an education/classroom building and the attractive looking penguin plunge habitat area.

CalgaryZoo021.jpg

Penguin Plunge:

Finally we get to see some animals - penguins! 3 habitats of penguins of spread across the area. Outside next to the gift shop, we find an outdoor habitat for humboldt penguins with a rocky pool area in one half and a grass covered mound with burrows for the penguins. Behind the humboldt penguins is a large building doesn't look the nicest outside but inside is the opposite. Inside there are 2 decent sized cold climate penguin habitats - king, gentoo and rockhopper are the species present. Guests will 'walkthrough' their habitat for a wonderful experience. Ingame of course will be 1 habitat on each side of the path to mimic the feel of one large habitat.

Zoo Entrance - Parking Lots and Entrance Plaza

First development of the zoo is of course at the north entrance of the zoo. We have 2 small portions of the parking lots to represent the larger 1800 spaces available in the real zoo (thinking 1800 spaces would mean 3 pieces per space = 5400 pieces), and of course the entrance plaza is also built as we do not enter the zoo right from the parking lot entrance, that busy highway between the parking and zoo entrance means a fun entrance to build and showcase.

Below is an overview of the north zoo entrance. 2 parking lots connect to the entrance plaza with our egg art piece standing out in the middle. The highway can be seen at the top where the plaza paths lead to a building which features a tunnel which eventually goes right under the highway.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.11.36.43.png

Hidden somewhere in this parking lot are some guest spawners, where exactly? Good question. The benefit of using path grids allow guests to have zero clipping with scenery pieces with only the use of colored plaster to hide the guest spawners, I've been doing this for years now so im good at hiding those spawners. Of course the most impressive feature of this area is the large transmission towers which are a prominent feature of the zoo entrance as the cables travel over the entrance, over the habitat areas into the second portion of the zoo and beyond. It's a great feature that adds a huge boost to realism to show we are building a city zoo.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.12.17.47.png

On the ground, custom media will be a core feature of the zoo. Creating custom signs with readable text (not those generic blank signs content creators love to use) gives us a realistic atmosphere that makes us feel we are exploring the real zoo. From signs about parking payment to animal facts, they are all a much needed addition to a successful recreation. If anyone is wondering, I did not make the canada flag, it's a workshop item (Link)
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.13.41.52.png

We can't forget about the egg, or at least my attempt at making an egg shape. This was not easy at all, it was near 2 hours of work (which is why it isn't featured in my video) to make the exact shape of metal rods and needing a walkthrough high enough for guests to pass through as well. That being said, im happy with how it turned out and represented the egg well enough. On the left of the egg, we will find the parking payment machines for guests to use.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.14.13.22.png

Entering the plaza we will find a generally large space for guests to enter and exit the zoo, a path to the right leads up to the upper parking lot. We can also see the successful work of the transmission tower cables, exactly like the real zoo. These cables may seem intrusive to the guest sightlines but it truly makes us feel its an urban zoo. Also of note is the leopard and zebra print canvas stands. These are seasonal events and advertisements for the zoo, since no custom media worked out the best we can have a nice selection of these animal prints to show off (even though we don't have leopards in the zoo 😂)
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.15.02.15.png

The entrance plaza also features the zoo sign and a line of animal signs leading into the zoo entrance. In real life, these animal signs are actually metal see-through sculptures.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.15.30.68.png

Another view of the animal signs, a selection of in-zoo animals are featured (or the closest equivalent i could find). Guests will find ample seating and bins in this entrance between these modern looking lights.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.26 - 21.15.50.83.png

The final part of the entrance plaza is the tunnel building. Guests will leave the entrance plaza through here, walk through this small building (which just features toilets inside) and then a gradual sloped tunnel brings guests to the main ticket booth area in the train station portion of the entrance.

Zoo Entrance - Train Station Exterior and Highway

I'm getting to the point of building where i'm constantly going "i built that?". Well I guess I did, this week's entry to the calgary zoo entrance is an entire train station between a busy highway. The zoo path will go right under this highway and through the train station, the train station interior is where zoo guests purchase tickets and pass through the ticket gates. We won't see the interior in this post however as that's detailed enough for it's own post.

Overview of the train station, highway and the entrance plaza. We can just about see the tunnel path for the zoo with the odd shade of green, the use of those conservation grass roof panels came in handy for blending in tunnels without disappearing terrain:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.37.33.53.png

From the lower parking lot, an even better view of the entire entrance can be seen:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.10.34.48.png

An 8 lane highway and the train station wedged in between gives that urban feel i've been wanting for a long time. It's just a shame the piece count is beyond my typical targets for an entrance but as we can see, calgary has no normal zoo entrance by any means. The train tracks alone are just under 2000 pieces that stretch from one map edge to the other to represent the entrance at it's best:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 11.51.52.65.png

The piece count may be high but it looks so goood, performance shouldn't be a concern for map 1. The first map is only going to contain around 15 habitats since the north of the zoo focuses on fewer but large naturalistic habitats for north american animals.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.02.35.34.png

The other direction features the city skyline of Calgary. I wasn't sure if making a city skyline that is roughly 2 maps away in real distance would work out but I think it did. The key to the successful feel of distance was the use of layering. Buildings placed at different positions along with a foliage wall in front of the skyline allowed for a illusion of distance, buildings just lined up against the map edge does not work. The buildings themselves are rather low quality due to the distance required for viewing makes most small pieces disappear. There was great difficulty finding which pieces are still rendered half a map away.

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 11.54.16.79.png

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 11.55.09.77.png

Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.11.40.26.png

The last part of the train station exterior is the train station building itself. A modern looking white and green building stands out against the highway. Use of those primitive blocks allowed for a reletively easy method of creating the brick pattern, simply duplicating the same pattern into the inside allowed for a nice looking exterior and interior without excessive amounts of pieces.

This is all very impressive. I was wondering, how long does it take you to build things?
Thanks! It does vary for certain items when building but a rough estimate of 2-5 hours of work across multiple sessions for each full post. I think 5 hours of building is me taking far too long but I often get told on my youtube videos that I build really fast. Perspective helps me understand I'm more skilled than I often believe.

Looking at certain objects in this zoo build so far for timings:
  • Parking lots/car parks - 15-20 minutes as they are very simple to build with gridded paths, and a simple 3 piece plaster car space that is duplicated. I spend more time colouring the jeeps than I do building the space here
  • Egg Sculpture - 2 hours. Very complex shape that is completely see-through needing an incredible amount of patience that I wouldn't of had in a previous zoo build.
  • Transmission towers (or pylons as I naturally call them) - 1 hour. Complex metal structure but easily identified patterns allow for an easy build, just the size of it takes a while to get the angles right for each size.
  • Entrance Plaza - 1.5 hours. Paths seem tricky but the use of plaster pieces to create sharp edges allow for a simple build. The zoo sign takes about 10 minutes messing around with the alignment of letters and the buildings take up the rest of the time.
  • Highway - 45 minutes - A 8 lane highway that spans the map length might seem like a huge task but honestly only took 45 minutes. Make a 10 metre wide path x2, plaster pieces for road markings, and plaster pieces again for the road barriers. Very boring doing duplication of road markings, barriers and lights for 30 minutes straight.
  • Train Tracks - 10-15 minutes. Takes around 1 minute to figure out its black girder beams, conservation wood slats and faux rock piles underneath to make a nice track. Rest of the time is of course again boring duplication that needs to curve at a realistic angle.
  • Train Station Building - 2.5-3 hours. Very complex and piece heavy building that needs a nice interior along with the exterior. Use of glass throughout the building requires a difficult approach to building.

Zoo Entrance - Train Station Interior

Part 2 of the train station includes a fully detailed interior because this is where the actual zoo entrance path goes through. From the entrance plaza, guests take the path through 2 tunnels and the train station to enter the zoo. Difficulty with managing paths right under the highway paths was a challenge that required the use of the conservation grass panels to cover any gaps in the terrain while also using and hiding elevated paths on the highway section above the tunnels - there is a minimum height under paths to allow a path under it, something close to 5 metres which I didn't have.

Guests enter the tunnel entrance building, here we can see signs for the zoo and public transit:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.06.27.94.png

A long tunnel with some orange marker lights goes under the first portion of the highway, this is on a slight slope as the train station interior is lower than the entrance plaza:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.06.01.19.png

At the station, we can see another nice sign for the zoo, multiple ticket booths and lots and lots of glass. The primitive block pattern for the train station is quite easy to maintain a clean look for the transition from the outside to the inside. It of course helps when both sides have the exact same pattern to work with. Basically a layer of white is built, then carefully placed green squares and rectangles to built the pattern - tedious but looks great.
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.41.50.27.png

Looking opposite the ticket booths, we can see the pathway that connects the train station platform to the train station path. Here a 3 slope ramp takes us back to ground level, helps to see how deep we are currently, and no there is no working path to the platform, the curve we can see here would of looked rather ugly with a path:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.05.35.46.png

A view from the train platform ramp, we can see the distant city skyline from here:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2023.12.23 - 12.04.41.29.png

Last part of the train station is the second tunnel, here the second tunnel finally takes us to the zoo itself. The zoo gates are hidden by this gate feature for no immersion breaking pieces that I wish had customisation options:

Zoo Entrance - Penguin Cafe & Gift Shop

We have gone through the tunnels under the highway and now in the actual zoo! The first sight we will notice at the zoo entrance here will be the combined gift shop and cafe building. This is a large, modern and very colorful gift shop making use of the new fantastic gift shop scenery pieces - no modular shop since its bugged right now and the shape of the building can't be customised at all which is not really helpful when building custom gift shops.

The exterior of the gift shop follows the modern trend of north america zoos - clean looking metal paired with wooden beams. Something to do with conservation about using these materials I read a while back. A large sign for the gift shop can be seen at both ends - those entering the zoo and those exiting the zoo. As some will notice, the indonesian brick wall and conservation wooden slats are key parts of the zoo entrance:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2024.01.04 - 15.08.54.63.png

The roof for the gift shop is similar to the one found on the train station, it follows the same girder and primitive rectangle pieces combined to create an effective roof. In addition to the girder style is the skylights. Custom angled skylights are an absoulute pain to put together as the glass pieces do not align properly so the need for filling gaps with metal beams is needed:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2024.01.04 - 15.09.23.93.png

Inside the entrance for the gift shop, we can find the shop counters right across us - thats the problem with the modular shop. I don't always want the counter to the side so the modular shop is rather useless for builds like this, using the standard shop counters and making my own shelves is just as good if not better. Why is there dinosaurs you may ask? Well if anyone has forgot, the prehistoric park features tons of dinosaurs in the zoo so dinosaurs are a leading theme in the gift shop (sadly no dino plushies 😕 )
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2024.01.04 - 15.12.10.50.png

In the corner by the counters, we can see a nice range of gift shop items. Simple wooden shelves work great at displaying the variety of items:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2024.01.04 - 15.23.19.81.png

Turning around, we get an overview of the interior. To the right we have the penguin cafe, a simple grab and go style cafe with outdoor seating for guests. A wide range of shelves display items and even a branded schleich display where the red panda is supposed to be a huge tiger model:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2024.01.04 - 15.12.50.77.png

Closeup view of the cafe, a variety of kitchen items and static food have been placed for a better representation of a cafe rather than just a simple counter and the default food stand:
Planet Zoo Screenshot 2024.01.04 - 15.13.28.71.png

Up on the roof, suspended whooping crane models are seen. The calgary zoo is known for its conservation programs for whooping cranes so quite an appropriate model to feature. We can also see the large amount of lights present to ensure a uniform coverage of light in the gift shop and even an air conditioning unit to truly make this feel like the real gift shop:

Penguin Plunge - Humboldt Penguin habitat

Finally some animals for the zoo! Right next to the gift shop building is an expansive complex for penguins, this includes a large indoor building for cold weather penguins and an outdoor habitat for warm weather penguins. Let's look at the outdoor portion in this update.

Just past the gift shop, we are greeted to the open penguin plunge entrance with some nice king penguin models. Beyond lies a large but rather ugly industrial looking building which is the building for the cold weather penguins, then of course there is the humboldt penguin habitat full of a dozen african penguins. Ample open viewing areas for the penguins is a great way to introduce guests to the zoo.

Before we reach the penguins, lets take a look across from penguin plunge. Here the Karsten discovery centre is a education building for the zoo but also features some freeroaming peafowl. The peafowl are going to be a common sight across this zoo project as these birds are found in multiple locations across the zoo however this will be the only spot we will see them in the north zoo.

Bright and colourful signage for the zoo pointing to all the different animal zones of the zoo is also found here. Efforts to make small toilet (or washrooms as they say in canada), gift shop and cafe signs came out quite nicely.

Over to the penguins now, we can get a nice look at this pebble beach themed habitat for the penguins. Often this is standard theming for warm weather penguins as in the wild these penguins will often be found on pebble beaches. This setup however is one of my favourites, a large open space with an oval swimming pool, fed by a waterfall and even a large space for burrows on a grassy mound in the other part of the habitat.

The pebble effect is made with a blend of large and small faux rock piles. Of course this is much larger pebbles than the real life habitat but I didn't want to use 300+ small faux rock piles to achieve the same result but slightly smaller.

The waterfall we can see at the back of the habitat is my one my first tries at seriously attempting the waterfall using both the prebuilt waterfall and the individual water effects. At the bottom of the falls, the prebuilt one was used for the lower water hitting the rocks then falling into the pool while the upper waterfall is using the small water effects, several medium vertical effects are used to make the waterfall much less powerful/wide than the provided 5 metre wide effects.

Over on the burrow portion of the habitat, the penguins love to gather over here instead of swimming funnily enough. Buffalo grass must be a favourite! Buffalo grass was placed manually across the entire grass area to achieve a realistic coverge of grass, the long grass paint was far too dense and tall for these penguins. I do wish the penguins could use the burrows though, for now they are just visual pieces.

Love it! I was going to take another crack at my what-if reconstruction of the Calgary Zoo this weekend, but alas, instead I get to sit in the dark and hope the heat doesn't go off.

I'm really excited to see how you tackle the inside of penguin plunge.
