Calling on the community to play in Open Play

Players can do all the same things in solo that they can do in open (at least according to FD anyway).

The prior games where both offline, and I did not feel it was a 'grind', and would probably not be an elite fan if I did feel that way.
Way to miss the point. The person I was replying to was stating that the financial risk of being ganked by some idiot (probably in an Eagle using dumbfires) coupled with there being no benefit or sound reason to play Open other than to shoot at people means he or she will only be taking a fighter into Open, in which case his or her potential losses equate to those of the PVP crowd. This sort of thinking can only result in Open being awash with Players all flying cheap replaceable ships and keeping their prized assets and trading work in Solo, so as to not risk losing the profits of many hours of work in-game. As such, Solo won't be 'Training mode', but rather 'Trading mode', that which people use to play a different role or to raise the credits to pay for that endless supply of cheap Eagles and Vipers.

I see, that makes more sense. Sans insult at the beginning and it would have been perfect :)

Thank you for clarifying.

But... if you only understood the potential, imagine a universe (well your living room) filled with strangers from across the galaxy (well across the neighbourhood), arriving uninvited, eating up your food, stinking up your toilet and damaging/stealing your possessions. Imagine a living breathing living room where you are forced to interact with others - where your spare time is dictated by the interests of others.
Is that a summary of the plot of the first Hobbit film?

And you venture into a community online forum, presumably to be alone and avoid interaction?

And you venture into a community online forum, presumably to do battle with other peo-

...nevermind, bad example. <_<

Edit: That was, admittedly, a bit childish, I couldn't help myself though, the opening was too tempting to pass up! x3

On a more serious note, not a clue what point you thought you were making with that parallel, but reasonably certain that it's largely fictional and doesn't have much bearing on reality. ^.^

Invalid argument detected. The way I play the game in my spare time and my interaction on the forums are completely unrelated. ++++OUT OF CHEESE ERROR RE-DO FROM START++++

You seem to be suffering from an ironic lack of a sense of humour. To be fair, my post could have benefitted from a few smilies. :p

Yes. Having a laugh, is often misunderstood. I must watch out for that in future and try not to do it again.

I've only been on this forum since game release. Looks like I'll be ditching it soon. Not very entertaining at all.

i started playing solo in beta, because i was afraid of getting killed by players. in the final release i tried open play once and have been playing it ever since. solo instantly became boring after seeing other players around.

also, i did not get killed. i did get interdicted twice in a row by the same guy, asking me "give me your cargo, sir". i find this quite friendly. i did not meet his request though and got away twice either because i was faster or he let me.

so, for anyone who is afraid of open play, there's nothing to be afraid of. times you see other players are rare because of the size of the galaxy anyways. and if you get caught, you can get away most of the time, if you use your booster correctly.

I'm currently grinding/trading rares in a Cobra in Open... why? Because it is fun. Sure I get hunted by pirates but isn't the heart stopping moment when you realise you are being hunted one of the reasons to play a multi player space game? Sure.. I lose ships and cargo (twice now), but not since being hunted in Eve a number of years ago have I experienced the same level of adrenalin rush trying to escape from PVP pirates.

The last one was I think CMDR Inn (or something like that) who blew me to pieces along with a full hold of rares which set me back a few hours but it was fun trying to get away (I'm not that skilled yet at fighting back, but I will be given more experience). Am I angry or upset... nope.. this is a game and a fun one at that; It's not like we don't have insurance :p

One thing I'd like to see introduced is more details on whoever tried to kill you.. just telling you "you were killed by Cmdr XXX" isn't really enough.. Perhaps, "You were killed by Cmdr XXX, a Dangerous pilot who was flying a Cobra, he finished you off with a volley from his multicannons" and perhaps a way to locate and track your murderer for a while so that you can hunt them in return.. now that would be fun.

Edit: Since the latest updates I've seen far more real players in the galaxy and hence it has become far more interesting.

This is a good idea

I went back to open last night. My problem is I end up getting interrupted by real life issues. In solo I can exit and not cause any issues, but in open I either provide a free kill or create annoyance by exiting in the middle of a battle.

These things happen. If I had to quit in the middle of a battle to deal with an AFK crisis, I wouldn't feel too bad about it. It's tough on the other person, but it shouldn't happen too often.

You seem to be confusing online communities with website communities. Also I never said online communities don't support single players games so now you just straight out lied.

Also, Version 1.9.32.0.8 for Skyrim

Patch 1.9.32.0.8 was released as a Steam beta update on 19 March 2013 and was released to all PC users on 20 March 2013, nearly three weeks before the 1.9.31.0.8 patch for Xbox 360 and PS3.[1]

Caboose from DayZ?? :)

AFAIK, they don't have the budget to keep a server structure that is not peer to peer going. It would drastically increase their hosting costs.

I purchased this game for the widely advertised offline mode, which as of a month before launch was removed without warning; welcome to the club.

Can you elaborate as this doesn't make sense at face value. Do you mean you paid to partake in the Beta or something or did you buy the game on release? If you bought the game on release despite knowing that the Offline mode had been removed a month before launch then you cannot truly claim you bought it for that reason.

@ OP "A big selling point in Elite is the ability to play in a real dynamic universe with other human players"

Actually that's also "a big refund point" to many people who didn't want the whole 'online' can of worms.

I prize being able to keep the unwashed masses out of my living room, physically and virtually.
No uninvited person shall be able to force his presence upon me in my house.
I have no interest in playing a computer game with people I don't know personally, as they might lack key traits like kindness, integrity, intelligence.

Open pay? FD can remove it.
Group play? maybe when FD introduces game mechanics to make use of it.
Solo online play? not acceptable either, with the server transaction issues, matchmaker issues, arbitration server issues, lag, disconnects, missing fuel money, missing commodity sale credits, ghost cargo issues.

And its getting to be an annoying game overall. After 11 days of being stuck in a "bugged star system", over hundred hours of previous game progress was lost with no further response from FD so far.

Did you just describe kindness and intelligence as key traits in a post where you refer to people you don't know as "the unwashed masses"?

I wouldn't want them in my living room either!!! ;)

That would be a shame.
Try not to listen to the idiots on this forum, they are an unfriendly bunch who seem obsessed with poinless point proving.

On the other hand the game itself is worth sticking with, it's going to be an amazing journey.

Is there a large difference in bandwidth usage between Solo and Open?

Apparently so. DB has mentioned playing solo on a train using tethering from his laptop thru his mobile. You are only occasionally connecting to the server and passing bytes... such as when carrying out a transaction or passing from one instance to another.

Open requires full PTP connectivity and always on. It's significant (not massive) but does require that your internet be reliable. Where I was on holiday we had Satellite internet - that would be definitely be a no-no.

£90 package at Kickstart (the cheapest one that got all optional starts and the lifetime pass, I had no actual interest in the Beta access I got), purchased only after Frontier answered the requests of potential backers and promised the offline mode. In fact, I had already given up on backing ED when I found the news somewhere else that they had added an offline mode, and that was what moved me to support the game.
(Or rather, £20 pledge at Kickstart, and a £70 upgrade on their online store just after Kickstart finished.)

I never back a KS game that I can't fully play offline, and even when purchasing such a game after launch I'm exceedingly wary; if the offline mode was never promised, I likely wouldn't have bothered with ED at all, not even after it launched. Besides, a true offline mode has too many advantages; a true pause, no interference from others in my game, being able to back up and restore my save game (or even edit it), modding the game, etc.

Truth be told, right now I consider OOLite a better game than ED. ED has better graphics and audio, but I find OOLite more fun and engaging, in large part because of how frustrating having to deal with the online-only limitations is.
