I only play in open, but don't go looking for pvp. I will never interdict another player. Hell, I don't even interdict NPC's (although I do expect to get round to that at some point). I'm one of the good guys. I'm hoping the social aspect of the game gets sorted out in the not too distant future and maybe I can play alongside some humans, which is really what I want to do - not against (although I don't mind pvp, just generally don't go looking for it), but ideally cooperatively.
Sadly, there's little reason for players to join together at the moment. I'm hoping that's a temporary situation.
Private groups are all well and good, but not ideal for meeting new people.
If you come across CMDR Innigo out in the void, say hello - you want to try pirating me, that would be pointless, I drive a viper and I'm really poor, coz I spend all my money on upgrades

Actually, I've only had one pvp encounter and it became clear early on that I was outclassed so I ran away
Anyway, I understand people's reluctance. My favourite MMO was City of Heroes probably because there was no pvp to begin with (well, it was confined to the arena) and even when pvp was rolled out it was only in specific areas which were clearly signposted so it wasn't like it intruded, but out in void people can be thrust into pvp situations anywhere and that's not for everyone. For me, it's just extra drama.
