Calling on the community to play in Open Play

If its supposed to be rare in open play. How will it be when we can walk around in stations? Even less? It kinda breaks the MMO part. And then leave us with something that could just as well be a Solo/Group game.

As I see it, Frontier simply made a mistake with the massive amount of populated systems.

They did not make a mistake, It's mostly d intended. Of it weren't for the griefers, it would be as intended.

As for walking around stations, who cares, not an important feature.

Not having read the bulk of this thread, I'll just say that I won't be in Open until the docking permission situation is fixed. (Yes, I realize I can go to less busy system, but that defeats the purpose of being in Open anyway.) Even a landing queue would be fine with me; I don't have a problem waiting per se. It is the constant spamming of docking requests that is intolerable to me.

I've only played since the release, when the consequences were not going to be reset, and it hasn't been like that, but I appreciate it was apparently bad during the beta at times.

I don't care about combat much, so its not about griefing, its just about seeing major hubs be major hubs and knowing events are dictated by humans who you can interact with, as per Draconus comment, this is one of the issues I have listed in the original discussion post that should be fixed, along with the other points which those in solo need addressing.

Also there needs to be a risk with dangerous systems and unknown systems I think (personally)

I'm talking within the last week.

See, there is - NPCs provide all the risk a lot of us want. Proven by how big and how fast private groups are growning (Mobius is what, 2000ish players now)

The thing is, people play games to relax - having someone turn up, disable you for no reason (no comms, doesn't ask for or take any cargo) and whiz off again - that is not relaxing for most people (2 threads on this very issue today, one was shut down about 2 hours ago).
Actions like this are getting more common, the threads get shut down fast as each time it devolves in to those who like doing it telling people to go play solo if they don't like it. With thing like that going on, you cannot hope for anyone to want to play open - and these idiots think they are ruining the game and taking delight, but in fact they are helping boost the private groups where they cannot go... so really, only they will lose out in the end.

All I can suggest, is wait. Once those idiots get bored and move on, people will start to try open again - or you can join a private group to get the interactions you're looking for.

Sorry, not interested in open play at all. Never going to play it. Particularly not seeing how smug and condescending the "community" reacts whenever someone posts about losing ships etc. on this forum. Then it's gloating comment after gloating comment piled on the OP. I don't even have a fleeting interest in playing a game with those people in it.

I initially bought this game solely for offline play. You know, like the good old Elite games from the before the world went mad with mediocre online interactivity and server side data. Now I'm stuck with a crappy solo online mode where I have all the downsides of an online game and none of the benefits from a tratidional offline game (backups, save games, game preservation etc.).

Even as an MMO, ED looks like a failure with tiny instanced shards of a gigantic universe. The whole online thing seems entirely hamfisted and a stubborn decision to have no offline game, just because... reasons!

I love open play. But I don't like orbiting around a station for 10 minutes plus when I'm trying to turn in a mission and being continually denied docking.

I agree with this entirely, it's something that needs to be sorted out, with everyone playing in open play it would be even worse.

I guess this is a valid reason for choosing Solo, and I respect that for those who want the solo game.

Calling on the devs to give the players a reason to play in open play. For the player who plays solo right now, there's no upside. Nothing gets better in open play. You just get docking queues (which I really haven't seen in open play where I fly) and other players that might want to shoot you (which has only happened twice for me, one time he blew me up and I learned a few things about combat, the other time they took a beating and ran away).

I try to play in Open Play whenever possible. I switch to Solo when :

1) I get fed up of hearing "Docking request denied" messages. Without a queuing system I can't waste half an hour of my life repeatedly requesting docking permission on the random chance I get a slot. There is no fun to be had there.

2) I get fed up of being attacked by human players for no reason in "no fire zones" where I'm not allowed to defend myself without getting slapped with a "wanted" status and then destroyed by the police.

Simple. Get out of the starting system. Pretty easy. Too easy. Too obvious.

In response to OP, we will have the way that we want to play. People that want others to join open play just want to interdict new Sidewinders.

A big selling point in Elite is the ability to play in a real dynamic universe with other human players, much of the criticism comes from not enough contact with a vibrant MMO community, and it seems increasing numbers of players are now playing in Solo mode.

A big selling point of this Elite game, for many players, is the possibility to play solo (or, in the case of many backers and people that pre-ordered before the option was removed, to play offline). Plus, the average split between group and solo in other games that give the option seems to be around 80% playing solo, 20% playing in groups; I wouldn't be surprised if the same pattern repeated here.

Most of this can be done without much impact on the experience of the game. I wonder how people feel about these things to improve perception and experience of open play?

I agree with all the ones that make open less frustrating to play, but I disagree with all the ones that would make solo (or group) less rewarding than open.

If the game needs to bribe players in order for enough of them to go open, it's a clear indication that those players are having more fun in solo or groups. This kind of bribing only serves to make the game less enjoyable.

Does non-consensual PvP automatically equal griefing, well it's a moot point anyway. No one is denying that these attack happen, but they are still very rare. Yet from the responses on these forums you'd think it happens every 5 minutes. Every time I cross the road I risk my life, but I still do it...

Depending on the player, even if it only happened once in a blue moon it would already be enough to sour the experience. It's my case, I will never again give any game where I can be attacked by others without explicitly opting into the PvP a chance, no matter how small the actual chance of the non-consensual PvP happening, and this goes for game modes that include non-consensual PvP in games where I can opt out of it.

Play your own way without risk solo.

Play your own way with risk and much, much more fun, online.

They MUST be separate. There is no reasonable justification to have a God mode implemented. You want to spend your entire bank account on one giant cargo hold of platinum? Better be prepared to deal with a pirate Commander, or deal with the loss. As it is now, 90% of players would just switch over to being invulnerable.

currently for me there is no reason to play in open even tho I play. But it feels like would be in solo as there are no gameplay for team to work with. Communicating with others is pain and slow, voice coms rarely works.

You get it. There's just no reason to play in open.

If they did away with the hull damage from interdiction, I'd play in open. Especially given that at the moment about 1/4 of the time the sequence is:
Get interdicted
Throttle down
"Throttle zero, submitting"
"FSD failure"
Hull damage.
(Yes, I've ticketed it)

I don't need a 50k repair bill every time someone wants to say hello.

Playing in a small (6 ppl) private group, longtime online mates, meeting on TS on a daily basis.

We're doing just fine as it is. I might pop over into open play at some point for some pew pew, but not before i've actually practiced combat.

It's been 99% trading and exploration so far, and for that part of the game i will stay away from open play.

When i feel like random PvP with strangers, i pop over to WarThunder....easily accessible, instant and consensual PvP.

Thats not true, I have a sidewinder and have no interest in combat at the present time

I started in solo while I got going then moved to open play, it juts feels right knowing that someone is out there. Not seen many CMDR's though but it is space after all, and I am not having any problems docking but it is fairly quiet at Eravate.

You are welcome to interdict my Cobra while carrying 40 tons of cargo anytime.. My cannons are getting rusty :)
