What did Brie Larson say?

Well, for one...

"I don’t need a 40-year-old white dude to tell me what didn’t work about A Wrinkle in Time. It wasn’t made for him! I want to know what it meant to women of color, biracial women, to teen women of color.”

“Am I saying I hate white dudes? No, I am not. What I am saying is if you make a movie that is a love letter to women of color, there is an insanely low chance a woman of color will have a chance to see and review your movie.”

"About a year ago, I started paying attention to what my press days looked like and the critics reviewing movies, and noticed it appeared to be overwhelmingly white male. So, I spoke to Dr Stacy Smith at the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative, who put together a study to confirm that. Moving forward, I decided to make sure my press days were more inclusive."

Such a horrible nasty woman! I wonder how many of her critics use similar criteria when judging the words of male actors and then slate/boycott their movies.

That article just paints a rosy picture of Brie & other assorted female stars whilst casting the men who disagree with them as "misogynistic trolls" while quite obviously not giving the full context. It carefully omits anything Miss Larson may have said that could be construed as racist/bigoted/man-hating by acting as if she is only being criticized for her gender alone. I don't have the full picture, but I'm getting the strong impression that there is more to the Brie Larson bashing than just the fact that she's a female superhero.

I will say this, though, she seems to be a more sensible female superhero than the God-awful Wonder Woman in her metallic bikini.

Well your quotes make it clear BL is a feminist but horrible and nasty, I don't really see it. I expect it's probably true the movie press would be, predominantly white and probably predominantly male, especially for a comic book movie you'd think- though I understood the Marvel movies have been pretty good at bringing female fans with them .. nothng to do with Thor's biceps I'm sure! It's certainly 'interesting' to see online activism against inclusivity of female leads, even those with an opinion even an attitude (I actually like Bree Larson for that, I think she's pretty punk rock) but I reckon Stan Lee would have been down with her. Heck of thing to throw protest energy into too, talk about your first world problems.

LOL, fancy that.

White people make up almost 3/4s of the US population...

Feminine character isn't the problem and you know it. You don't have to hate men to champion women. If your comments were even remotely true, then Wonder Woman would have flopped. Bottom line is, Brie Larson is a man hater and some of us take issue with that. If a man had said what she said about females, he'd be called a misogynists. Meanwhile beta boys and fem are so quick to call anyone a misogynists. She's so blinded by her hate of men, she can't see the irony or hypocrisy of her own comments.

Well then I stand corrected I had no idea she was like that

Well, the comments I quoted - which have been used by some to paint her as a man-hating SJW - were actually referring to a different movie (A Wrinkle In Time), but were picked up on by reddit groups, a conservative blogger, etc. to try and promote a boycott of the upcoming Captain Marvel - pretty common pattern.

Wow... how is the movie about hating men? I musta missed that when I saw it.

What do you think of most of the other superhero movies where women are there mostly just as eye candy or romantic interests/damsels in distress? Are you offended by them as well?

This kind of sums up what's going on with the actress for me

Bottom line is, Brie Larson is a man hater
You don't have to hate men to champion women.

Doesn't it cuts both ways? Meaning she's only championing women as far as I can tell and that doesn't instantly make her a man hater. Right!

Isn't it just a factor of there being two basic genders though, if you're championing one in relation to the other it follows logically one gender has the upper hand already, otherwise the other wouldn't need championing?

So if she's saying, "we need more women (in the industry)", it's the SAME THING as saying "too many men in it". I mean, I hate women as much as the next bloke (not really) but this is classic internet pedantry surely?

edit: My go to reviewer for anything comic book is Grace Randolph (Beyond the Trailer). She knows her stuff and, though I haven't watched yet - because she warns spoilers and I haven't seen the movie yet - I bet this will be an interesting view on the teacup storm;

Slightly related.

Looks like I will be watching the next Avenger's film... On my sister's wedding day. My future brother-in-law is looking to get ready early and then we can all go watch the film in our suits.

Yes, I'm wearing a suit.

Save me.

At least I don't have to wear a tie.

I take it people approve of this match pair! That's class, at least someone has their priorities straight lol.

It's the patronization. She wants to be a champion for her ego, not to make a difference. It's a popularity contest. It's patronizing and paper thin. That's the issue. I was raised by single mother and a sister six years older than me. I was raised on moderate values of respect. You don't separate respect for women from respect for men. You respect PEOPLE. We all knew this in the 80s but people desperate to be relevent need to keep shoving it down your throat and instead of going after the actual misogynists they pick on low hanging fruit, meek men who are already taught to feel guilty, like cowards. If she rolled up her sleeves and stopped hypocritically hiding behind her own privilege while condemning others for their privilege she wouldn't be such a disgusting PERSON. Her gender is irrelevent, she just wants to put herself on a pedastal.
Also, the trailers are trying to hit you over the head that she's the strongest and the fastest, like "take that, men" as if we give two squirts if a woman is stronger than us, as if it's revolutionary. So she shoots herself in the foot, pleading that "women are strong too" as if we didn't already know that, for years.
Also, when you talk about women's wages being lower, we're talking about the privileged upper class. Everyone I know gets the same pay for the same job, male or female and it's been that way for 30 years.
An example of privilege at it's finest, trying to condemn others' privilege.
I'm tired of feeling guilty for all that native land I stole, all those irish I drove out of new york, all those women I keep chained in the kitchen, all the oppression I hold people down with. This is why I don't socialize. People are desperate hypocrites looking for a stepping stone for their little popularity contest. Can't have meaningful conversations without trendy crap obscuring a point.
Has nothing to do with men or women, just whiny, scummy people trying to force themselves into relevance at the expense of the most convenient target. People fall for image and don't even care about integrity anymore.
It's under the guise of men vs women because it's a convenient soap box.
People want to matter but they don't and they can't get over that existential crisis.

I had seen tons of negativity about this on youtube for the past several weeks (before the darn thing was even out). Ignored all of it. Went to go see it this evening.

The beginning was a little hard to figure out (you'll "get it" later on in the movie so I won't spoil it - just stick with it), but otherwise, found it enjoyable, a few laughs here and there, takes place earlier in the time line so expect to see a beige PC running Windows 95 on it. Also had Stan Lee's last cameo appearance in it.

As usual, if you go, stay after the first set of credits. I didn't stay to see if there was another teaser at the end of the full credits since the call of nature was too strong to ignore.

I gave it a [up]

I look forward to watch it. I wasn't a big fan of Ms/Captain Marvel in the comics. While very strong, as the strongest Marvel character ever (maybe beaten briefly by Jean Grey when she was into blowing up stars), she was almost too powerful in the comic to be interesting, and frankly described a bit boring despite a lot of potential for great stories. There are much more interesting female superheroes in the Marvel comic book universe such as She Hulk and Squirrel Girl (my two favourites). But Marvel has done some interesting things with Captain Marvel over the years so I look forward to see where MCU places her. And the movie sounds great, in a Guardians-of-the-Galaxy-for-the-90s-kids sort of way.

:D S

+1 So true, I'm sick of the champagne socialist of Hollywood bleating about inequality while they take multi millions in pay and live in gated communities to keep the riff raff out, sodding hypocrites. If they want a fairer world then maybe just maybe THEY should DO more instead of flapping their useless gums.

I'm a white male and I'm SICK of people saying I'm privileged JUST because of my gender and race...hey SJWs how about you listen to your own advice and NOT stereotype people and judge them and demonise them JUST because of how they look and what dangles between their legs?

Oh I also forgot I'm personally responsible for inventing slavery.......

Feminine character got the fanbois/misogynists panties in a knot.

That's oversimplifying things, and it's borderline inflammatory. There are plenty of people who love strong female characters but are turned off by Brie Larson, myself included. I'll still see the movie when it comes out on rental (which I do for every movie except Avengers), but while I'm watching it I'll be wishing it was Emily Blunt (the "Angel of Verdun") playing the role.

Most of the backlash is down to Bree Larsons Anti white male rhetoric. Youtube is full of examples of her banging on about 'the patriarch'.
She isnt for this reason a very good role model for young women in my opinion, and Disney should be careful.
