General / Off-Topic Cecil the Lion

Damn, people are going nuts over this!

I mean, I would never go to Africa to kill an animal (especially endangered and that I would not eat afterwards), it all sound a little sick, but I read comments on news websites and it's crazy, people are talking like they are members of ISIS, asking for beheading and slow death to the guy, and to all hunters... Now if he poached, I hope he will have to face justice, but seriously? Some animal lovers are really aggressive people. What do you guys think?

I don't agree with trophy hunting but if it's done legally, well, whatever floats your boat I guess. I'm sure there is a gut feeling, and knee jerk, reaction to this (particularly as the lion had a cute name) but if the counties in question allow for legal game hunting that's really up to them. As you say though, if their local laws were broken then the perps need to be taken down! I believe the two guides have already been summoned to court? The dentist has probably gone home so he can avoid justice. He does seem like a bit of a to be honest.

The extreme reactions are childish though - the law needs to be adhered to, and arguably even changed, but the demonisation is, as ever in cases like this, completely over the top.

That guy needs to be in court as well and if the USA are smart enough they will pack him off on the first flight!

I'm not sure that legality has much to do with it since I believe it's his action that's being judged here, not his compliance with local law (it's easy to think of examples where we would prosecute people when they returned from a jurisdiction where they'd done something legally, but that we are not prepared to tolerate).

I don't have a huge problem in this case btw, I'd prefer people didn't go around shooting animals of any kind without sound reason, but I don't think he should be demonised either. Still, maybe the publicity will do some good.

I find the whole thing puzzling.

If he'd wrestled a a fully grown healthy Lion to the ground and punched it to death with his bare hands whilst still being a highly questionable act that would at least be considered some kind of feat. But killing it from a safe distance with a bow and arrow is hardly an achievement to be proud of regardless of how you feel about animals or whether it was legally sanctioned.

Then you have to wonder at what point it seemed like a good idea to publish such a thing in this day and age when the internet can whip up a hate mob of loons in a matter of minutes. A bit like the peer that allowed himself to be photo'd wearing an orange bra and snorting cocaine - how did that ever seem like a good plan?

Predictably the reaction of the mob is totally over the top and he and his family now need to weather the storm and hope they don't encounter any proper nutjobs that might actually do something lethal.

What really es me off is the fact that his 5 cubs will now be killed by the new alpha lion that takes Cecil's place.
The guides knew who he was, black haired manes are not common. The fact that they tried to destroy his GPS collar speaks volumes.
What kind of person wastes 50K american to get a trophy for his wall? One with an empty unfulfilled life with money to burn.
He's the guy cutting you off in his M5 on the highway.
This isn't his first time at poaching, he has done it to get a bear in the US as well.
Of course the anonymous demonizing is wrong but he has offended a lot of the world with his callous selfish actions.
Prosecute him in Zimbabwe I say.

What do you think of hunters in general? Are you able to discuss the subject or do you think they are all mindless killers? Maybe that guy is a bozo, but the extreme generalization and violence I hear on the internet is shameful. And I sense a lot of hypocrisy in all this.

Note : I'm quite happy we are able to discuss this in civilized manner.

It's a shame - and a disgrace.

But how many people have died from poverty &/or needless lack of medical care, whilst the animal lovers post away about this cat?

Humans get very little airtime - simple reason: they are not furry.

You are right, it is turning into a media panic.
My own opinion is that anyone who kills anything for pleasure is an uncivilised animal, themself.

I agree, it belongs to caveman era, but remember, it only makes the crazy animal lovers go nuts if the animal is cute / furry.

I would be curious to know how many anti-hunters actually don't mind eating meat 2 times a day, like it miraculously created itself without an animal dying.

Some animal-lovers are human-haters.

Some of us: hopefully most of us, would like to see a more measured response. I'd like to see him punished, but there is much worse happening in the world.

Yes lynch him. After all what was he thinking hiring professional guides and getting all the appropriate permits from a government more than happy to take his money.

Anyone remember a time when people used to say, "Judge not lest ye be judged"?

Didn't think so.

+1. I don't approve of his behaviour, but the human-haters, ironically, forget that we are animals too.
