I've always found the right mode to be the one I feel like at the time.
I do this, sort of. I just play the game. I used to play in Solo (the first few weeks) then got curious about who all these other players were on the system traffic reports so I started playing in Open & haven't really looked back.
Open isn't just PvP mode, it's everything mode. Or it used to be anyway, still is for me. I can see where my (mostly explorer) friends are on the galmap, I meet random strangers, 99% are friendly or benign, every so often some drama happens
ETA I should add that while I don't go looking for trouble I don't particularly avoid specific systems or hotspots either, I just play my own game.
I play in Mobius when I want a 'everything mode'. Which is conveniently minus the idiots with whom I don't wish to play this game with anyway. And I can actually say hello to other players without having to fight them. I seldom play in Mobius any more though. Because other than seeing a few other players, and having to worry about them getting in my way, is not my idea of enjoying my time in ED.
I tend to do most of my socializing in the real world, and really don't want/need to interact with strangers in a video game. But apparently, some folks need this stuff. Whatever makes 'em happy I guess.
