CG, game itself actually encouraging cheating??

To be fair, the most soul crushing part of the CG is not to grind Jameson's crash, but to give the materials. First, you need to trade them first (3 g5 at a time). Then it uses the same UI than for Powerplay trading. Thankfully, it's not limited to 20 at a times like the PP, but still.

Trading all my mat from Jameson, I had wrist pain. I can safely say it's poor design.

Relogging, alt-f4, etc are not cheating. Just using a design flaw in the game. Of course it would be easier if we didnt have to gather mats in the first place, but here we are.

Alt F4 is in fact punishable according to FDev, do it and get reported then I am sure they will explain it to you

They are patching relogging so surely that must be against the rules too? Or else why fix it?

One they have it patched I am sure it will be tracked and dealt with. The ALT F4 became such a problem in PvP and was reported enough times that it is now a ban offense, or at least solo force offence simply because there were ways to see and report it. The relog issue can be done in solo unseen, as with open with minimal odds of being seen by someone simply due to the size of the galaxy and how instancing works. I wouldnt be surprised if they lock resource points like Jamesons to a cooldown timer attached to the commander where it will only allow you to scan once every 24 hours or so.

CMDR-specific instance lockout and instance persistence seems to be the most plausible implementation. Can also work with instances where resources would effectively be shared (f.ex. Dav's Hope) by only matchmaking CMDRs with similar usage progress.
The only downside is that it might break wings and/or multicrew.

I think it is really the only way. Perhaps even something like specific POI's like Jamesons being a once per account scan thing since you get his logs. I was full on data materials just from doing planetary scan job missions for the manufactured materials I wanted, those still give decent data mats as is, plus you get paid for them.

It's FDs call what is and isn't an exploit.

Alt F4 is an exploit according to them.
Relogging, while an undesirable effect, is not. FD have said this much on both subjects.

The only difference is what FD says, and there's no logic they need to bring to the table.

Edit: if i had to speculate why, alt-f4 is a detectable, easily distinguished event (user termination of a process). Simply logging in to the game is not.

I can only imagine re-logging was crucial to gathering guardian artifacts as well.

What are you doing?
Exigious claims his ways are the only correct ways to do things and doesn't say the alternatives in his "tutorials". He's not really a very trustworthy source of info in this regard. For Example: His tutorial on unlocking Palin just tells you to go to a crash site, log in and out, and he says "If you're doing it any other way you're doing it wrong". This is actually a lie:

He doesn't mention you can go to a Thargoid structure and get the sensor fragments through combat with the scavenger drones there, and you can do it fairly quickly. It's a lot of fun in my opinion, and there are amazing assets to see and a puzzle to solve if you haven't already done so. So there are alternatives. But this is not the "wrong way". The same applies to guardian artifacts, find a list of sites to visit from the cannon website, get the ship you want, and go visit them. It helps break up the colleciton gameplay with a bit of space travel (which I think this game excels at).

In would say just don't listen to Exigious if his tutorials make you not want to play the game (that's how I feel about them). He's obsessed with min maxing when it comes to collecting mats because he sees anything other than that as a waste of time, if another method is 10 percent slower or whatever he just won't tell you about it. I prefer getting things like fragments and materials from sites organically through gameplay, and I just visit a few one after the other rather than stay at one.

I reckon, this CG is bait to see how many people are doing the log fest, how depended the community is for relogging to farm engineering mats.
They see that logging is an essential game component for farming engineering mats, which can mean one of 2 things:
1. Fix the game design by implementing new/better game loops in order to award mats
2. Stop the re-logging from refreshing the materials (add an innate timer to it, like with asteroids)

It's not cheating by definition, but obviously this event is based on exploitable mechanic - I'm not sure how much Fdev realised this when setting this up - they certainly realised it when they modified tiers - when it was obvious that people are able to farm those mats ad nuseam and flood the CG with it.
Considering last time the Dev playing didn't know the compass points to the assigned landing pad I will go out on a limb and say FD is in general terms woefully out of touch with how their game works and how their players play. I suspect they rely almost fully on telemetrics with little understanding of the why and how's.

As to answer OP: I just ignore these cgs. If exploiting instancing mechanics is how you 'win' then nuts to that.

You are giving them too much credit. They can already see how often people relog at which system. This is just a mindless CG design, created by people with no understanding of how people would respond and no time to learn.

We've been here before.

Wow. I finally said "why not?" and joined the Hudson CG (obviously, the other one's reward is meh). I spent around 1/2 hour and I'm at 50%. At last my OCD pays off.
But I wouldn't be surprised if after the conclusion we get a message from FD like "After all these years and extreme battery use, the beacons at Commander Jameson's site have finally felt silent" :p

Based on previous history we're more likely to get 'only 2.8% of commanders re-log at Jameson's crash site.'

I didn't even think about logging for materials for the CG until I read the OP a few days ago. It was enough to make me reconsider participating, because it kinda "cheapens" the experience for me. I don't log for mats (most tedious form of grinding IMO), but just knowing that it gives an edge to those willing to do this make the CG feel less authentic to me.

I still may zip over to give Winters the mats I currently have, just as quick one-off contribution. Obviously this won't be enough to get top 75%, but I really could care less about any of these special modules. For me it's all about the narrative, and every little bit helps I guess. 🤷‍♂️

No logging for me, just handed in all of the junk I've collected over the years and got to 50% in both.
I feel that logging is an exploit so avoid doing it (and it feels especially wrong to me at the Jameson site) however we all play to our own rules so what goes for one person doesn't necessarily fit for another - I'm sure many feel the way I play to be unnecessarily tedious!

The trading down then handing in is really dull though - just a button to sell all would be great.

I play this way too, dont care what others think. Where I draw the line is when someone demands something that affects my gameplay especially making it too easy or I demand something that affects theirs. Im happy to play as the game intended and designed to play. I like that this one is optional, either do nothing but press buttons repeatedly for Credits or dont, unlike Combat & Trade buffs which affect my gameplay all the time.

Id prefer an optional hard mode, so my ranks and achievements mean something, by my standards as its my game. Many ways to achieve this without affecting anyone elses gameplay at all but most players want an easy game with I win buttons so thats what is catered to, gone is the niche that made Elite so good in the first place, now we have gone full circle to High Scores and infinite lives which is what the original premise stood against. Hopefully in the long run it re-balances out or at least makes it optional but Im losing hope and just put up with it doing my own thing in my own way, which Im still allowed to do but its getting harder. (some people even call for NPCs in CQC it make it easier for flips sake!)
