Changing Fov

The limits max is set lower probably because having too high a fov distorts the image too much and it looks terrible.

If you choose to set it higher and it causes other I/F issues then it's not FDs problem.

I do not have an appdata folder. I don't know if this is because I bought the game from steam or not but every time someone tried to help me find it we were both left scratching our heads. There however is one folder that mentions graphics but it says graphicsconfiguration where I change my ui but nowhere in it does it have the values for FOV. There is also another folder I can change stuff about the graphic settings but it's long and only filled with stuff pertaining to my graphics card and other game data values that says not to mess with at the top.

It may be hidden , so try showing hidden files

I've been using 70 ever since I first found out about this, works pretty well for me in just about every ship, though the ship gui is maybe just a tad too small for some, especially when accelerating. Gotten pretty used to it by now.

Cool. I might give it a.go. Can you share your cockpit color settings too. I really like them.

Wasn't sure if you were asking for mine, but here they are lol.
I've used heaps of different colors, but always come back to this one.

<MatrixRed> 0.61, 0.68, 0.66</MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen>-1, 0.56, 0</MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue>-1, 0.18, -1</MatrixBlue>

It is hidden; as far as I know every user account has an appdata folder. As another user suggests show hidden files, or just type \appdata at the end of the path in the top of file explorer window.

Best topic, ever written since months on these forums. No "I'm so bored/elite let's talk about XYZ and let us waste time instead of playing the game" thread.

Thank you for sharing this information.

Using FOV 68 @ 23" 1080p.

I find 68 to be perfect.

Here is 68 fov at 2560x1080:

That is crazy! Does it take any getting used to?

No, not really - it feels perfectly natural. The normal 16:9 view feels very closed in to me. The wider field of view that I have on my 21:9 monitor feels more like I am actually sitting in the ship rather than looking at a screen.

EDIT: Some while back I posted a thread on how to get a 21:9 aspect ratio resolution on a regular 16:9 monitor.

Here is a reference table for you. HFOV vs VFOV equivalent at 16:9 1920x1080 and 16:3 5950x1080 (5760x1080 would be similar)
Note: The StereoFocalDistance setting in the same file seems to help with any fisheye effect. I found no benefit over 35.000000 (default 25.000000)
In the settings.xml I use VFOV 88.507155 for the Oculus despite the DK2 natural HFOV of 110, and 20.575795 for the Tri-27inch with a StereoFocalDistance of 35.000000, and TrackIR. This keep my HUD nicely filled on the center monitor, with the TrackIR compensating for any higher FOV I might otherwise prefer on a single monitor.
Code:
	  Oculus TriMon
	1920x1080	5950x1080
HFOV VFOV VFOV
120 88.507155	34.905154
110 77.552142	29.065432
100 67.672748	24.412113
90 58.715507	20.575795
80 50.534016	17.320007
70 42.995661	14.486516
60 35.983398	11.965103

I also love this thread.

Whilst 68 was a bit too extreme for me, upping it significantly above max default improved my Elite experience no end.

Your sense of scale improves around and inside stations, you have better overview of enemy movements in combat, you don't lose sight of your instruments during tight turns. Heck I thought even things like planets looked better. Maybe because you could see more of them as backdrop to stations etc. :)

So thank you to those who helped figure this all out :)

I have added my personal spreadsheet for calculating hFOV to vFOV as a Google Doc. Just enter your Resolution and favorite hFOV, vFOV will be calculated, copy and past vFOV value into settings.xml . The list to the right of it are just some Std. 16:9 resolutions, that I keep for supersampling reference purposes.
