News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

So the current basic loadout for explorer ship is:
shield
dss
ads
fuel scoop
No problem, even the sidey can do this.

Add SRV requirement for synth these ships can no longer be fit for exploration
viper
eagle
ieagle
DBS
hauler
sidey

Was this really the plan?

I'd really like to see the ADS and DSS baked into one module.

Having read through it a couple more times, it seems reasonable & I'd like to try it soon please.

Q. Would the new system still pick up a 2nd 3rd star & it's planets that are 500LS's from the main star or would we just see noise on the scanner (do we have to travel the 500LS's to get the info on these planets)?

The intention is that the energy distribution should provide explorers with information they can interpret to help identify if specific body types exist in a system.

Please allow us to TUNE a little more to find specific things. As we can use different filters in astronomy to find certain gases, please consider the ability somewhere in this new system for us to look for specific deposits!

The colors of landable planets.

Will the color patches of those planets now relate to what raw materials we will find on the surface with the SRV scans?

1) Using a forum for conversation is antiquated, hard to read, and makes meaningful discussion difficult, since every single post is in a linear format. Something like Reddit would be much better, so that all conversation about a single topic can be collapsed into one thread. Replying to a post 16 pages back is not conducive to productive dialog. But that's just my two cents.

2) Still waiting to hear that this will work fine in VR. Personally I'd love to see the new scanner be on a side panel so that there's no delay in loading it like there is currently for the two maps. I'd like to be able to switch between the scanner and the viewport at a glance, especially if using VR or mouselook to look around.

3) Your comment about honking only revealing the entry star, and discovering USS's and CZ's by flying close to them, is contradictory. If I can discover a USS by flying close to it, why do I need to honk in order to discover the star I just jumped in on which I clearly already know is there. If the scanner is only going to discover the star I'm already sitting right next to and then allow me to begin doing the discovery minigame, I shouldn't need to honk in the first place.

4) Please oh dear god can we have access to our bookmarks in the left side navigation panel now so that we can use them to quickly plot between different systems without having to go into the Gmap every time?

5) Still waiting to hear that we'll finally have multicrew SRV support.

6) Really getting into the weeds now but I think it would be nice if FDev would release their own video tutorial on using the new system to show everyone how it's done instead of relying on the community to do it for them.

****Sorry, I realize I sound a little y. That's not intentional. I absolutely adore this game. I'm not an explorer, but I'm very excited by these proposed changes. I feel sorry for hard core explorers because this sounds like A LOT of work they they'll have to do ad infinitum. But I'm looking forward to trying it out, doing some mapping, and enjoying the other benefits of the update!!!

Well done Devs. Now please make a tutorial video for those who are having a hard time understanding the changes. It may save you a lot of time. [yesnod]

Probably a big ask, but is there any chance that we'll be able to use this interface to target stars outside the system and read their energy distribution? Maybe even ID them to an item on the actual galmap? This would be a useful and fun observatory-like feature, and I know I could probably spend hours just scanning the sky from anywhere, surveying the local constellations and nearby star clusters.

Honestly, this looks very encouraging! I can't wait to see how it actually plays out. The best part is that exploring is no longer just honking a scanner mindlessly. These new changes will require more interaction and choices by the player. That's the type of gameplay improvements Elite needs. I'm concerned about the limitation of "ammo" for probes, but I'd care less as long as we can synthesize them easily.

Hi Adam, this is a lot of cool stuff but a question please. This all scanning process happens in space. Is there also additional gameplay and new scan processes for the srv? Some reason to land on planets and increase the planetary data reward?

This thread is not meant for conversation - there will be others for that!

Well, i rather have 10x 1 minute engaging gameplay than 100x 10 seconds boredom. But that's only because I imagine it to be engaging.

Well, 10x 1 minute of finding nothing interesting is probably going to be less engaging that 10x 10 seconds of finding nothing.

One man's 'engaging gameplay' is another's 'pointless busywork'.

However, the changes seem to be popular, so I guess FDev have come up with the goods.

Not salty, just sad.

The changes to the ADS sound awful. Way too much time will be spent hunting what could turn out to be something like 20 rocky bodies system after system.

If i had my way I'd have something like this with the ADS having a passive and active part.

ADS:
Passive - auto fires on system entry, gives you system view we have.
Active - Zoom into specific planets to see if anything of interest is on it
DSS - fine with what they've said. Means you can find stuff on the surface and mats via the probes
