News Chapter Four - Exploration Reveal

Look at it this way: Every now and then, you'll have to break your discovering "monotony" (which will of course get way less monotone with the update) and descend to one of the planets, unpack your SRV and hunt for some materials. Or just outfit a mining laser (no refinery needed!) and enter a ring for some mining fun.

Surely you will find promising places for this gathering excursions while cartographing the galaxy. :)
Really, I like how this updates ties multiple game mechanics together!

No, I most likely will just forgo using a DSS for general exploration. These sort of things would work well if I take my Cobra out though. I just don't care for using it quite as much.

Exactly. For instance, I would love if neutron jumps were more powerful (say 3x current value) but would damage your ship much more so you'd have to repair more often. Everything that creates variety is good imo.

I don't like this idea of having to synthesise planetary materials to manufacture these micro-probes and would urge the developers to consider infinite ammo because these probes are going to be the keys to unlocking/mapping new systems. Deep space explorers are going to use thousands of them but that's not the reason why I say this.

What does an explorer do when their deep in the outer rim and their staring at the wreckage of their only SRV? Will customer support replace it, no questions asked or will it be the end of any meaningful exploration when they use up their last probe.

If only we were able to synthesise a new SRV into our empty bay, now that would put the smile back on our face, come on guys make us smile :)

So this means that if I find 2 USS enter into one when I get out the second one will still be there?
Not like today that when I get out of a USS the system just "refreshes" spawning new USS in new locations?

This is an update for EXPLORERS... obviously they weren't considering you when they decided to do the first Explorers update in 3-4 years, if exploration becomes a chore it's because you couldn't care less about the actual discoveries, it seems it's only the glitter and the now, now, now, that interest you.
and as it's not been seen in action yet we don't know what if any changes will occur!

Rofl. Genar is very much an explorer. An experienced one with that.

His concern is valid : it is going to be very time consuming and repetitive. Scanning for ice planets around M stars will get old fast IMO.

A fast overview of the system mass distribution could be a compromise.

Don't assume that all explorers are into compulsive scanning.

I still think the changes are positive, but getting a quick mapping of the system with a bunch of cues to help decide : worth investigating Y/N would be nice.

I don't like this new discovery scanner. It will take much longer when you just jump to system to find mission destination. You will need scan it long time to find the location or jump to nav beacon for the same reason. I hate the idea that it doesn't work the old way as well.

I think it was stated that mission locations are visible without having to scan everything untill you find it.
I was worried about that too.

Not read all the responses yet so apologies if repeating..

I'm a little concerned by what this replaces as opposed to complements.
It reads like a replacement of the existing honk.... Which frankly would be a disaster in terms of becoming arduous.
I'm hoping, though, it's really replacing the existing DSS (and moving it to the discovery scanner) and then extending it by repurposing the DSS to the mapping function.

So hopefully .... Arrive in system, honk. Look at system map, decide yet or nay if it is of interest, just like today. Move on to next system OR engage the new tool to "DSS" all the bodies (first discovery tag). Optionally probe the interesting ones (first mapped tag)

This would imply it is slower to "DSS" the main star and the body that's only 10ls away, but much faster to "DSS" the entire system. A trade off I think most could be happy with.
The "new DSS probe" function sounds great. Can we ask to also have some kind of "anomaly detected" during the initial honk? Sure, it'll be fascinating at first to map the planets and discover ruins etc. But eventually, the 2000th system just isn't going to warrant that level of investigation unless we get a prompt. This opens the door to rare finds being procedurally populated in the future.

I completely agree with this... with fresh perspective from Frontier- there should also come a fresh sound.

Just not a toaster ding, please.

What?

Maybe a hearing test is in order?

I'm under the impression that the initial scan results give this... you get basic info.

Of course then, you never know what you'll find until you have a closer look, after all.

That's sort of the point here with the scanning changes, IMO.

I'm interested. Very interested. Exploration is my main gameplay (and my only Elite so far), and I welcome anything that makes it more fun.

On a side note... please, please please please, could we have the opportunity to control this new UI, and the galaxy map, with Touch controls in VR? Maybe as a long-term goal?
