You can't easily avoid focussed PAC rounds, especially since there's a bug that doesn't even always render the damn things when your opponent shoots them.
The only solution I can think of is to go FA off with gimbles, which lets you dodge in more chaotic ways as you are no longer forced to bring your nose to point straight at your lead reticule. Of course, then you are not hitting with anything that deals absolute damage.
The canopy is ridiculous though no doubt, I've had it go twice and in neither case did I see the shot coming. It was in PvE as well, which is practically unheard of. I'd say the Chieftain is somehow more prone to canopy loss than the DBS, and I fly my DBS without shields period.
So your stance is the canopy is ok ?
So, my stance is it's not a disaster. I said if it got a buff, it would help me out. I offered some advice for PvE, why do you feel the need to get in my stuffs? Find something else to obsess over, like the Mat Traders, or Combat Loggers.
I have tried A6, and Bi-Weaves, they both work fine. The idea is in the description of the ship, 'avoid damage'. The aChief dances with the best of them, use that, rather than face tanking. With a C6 Bi-Weave with g3 Reinforced/Fact Charge I got through both a Dangerous 'Conda, and Deadly 'Vette Pirate Lord missions, with a full canopy. The 'Conda, I left with 100% hull. So, I would say for PvE the aChief is just fine. There are plenty of slots and power for SCB's. Effective Shielding should be decent on an aChief. I have never been able to bring myself to load up any SCB's (an old prejudice from 1.X days.).
I can imagine some c5 shield with a c6 SCB being pretty darn good with this ship. Another bit of advice is: load some MRP's I'm sure they protect the canopy some. As for PvP, that is for someone else to comment on.

So how long does the canopy last against Thargoids? Since that IS the main purpose for it's creation, unless i am mistaken. I love the ship and l use it for data delivery, bounty hunting, assassinations, and basically any other combat endeavor that is expected to be short term. I would never take it to a CZ. Against NPCs I don't have an issue avoiding PA's. It's as fast as my CZ FDL cracking 530. Canopy cracked on me once and that's because i took on a assassination wing mission with it solo, but i dipped before it shattered and i returned with a different ship.
I think a weak canopy adds some spice. Nothing an A grade life support system can't help alleviate. With that said though, I do not go bug hunting.
The best way to not take damage, is to not get hit.
Focus on your drives and make the ship as light as possible. Fast regen is also your greatest friend if you do take a hit or two, but don't rely on it. You just need to learn to dance.
the prospect of a sensitive canopy is not a deal-breaker in of itself. the gunship has a weak'ish canopy.
the core issue here is that it often pops in a singular PA/rail-gun volley the moment the shields drop. this cannot be counteracted by an AFMU as that only repairs canopies that are damaged not popped.
if a canopy could only take %10 damage every 3 seconds then that would be workable and AFMU's could be used to fix it but instant blowouts don't add spice, they destroy the chieftain's PvP prospects and severely limit its PvE ones.
for NPC's PA's its less of an issue as they don't tend to fire large volleys of multiple PA's at once and their PA's do less damage than a human CMDR's engineered ones, however even then i will find myself repairing it in lenthly fights even against lasers.
as for thargoids the video below ought to show how weak it is, however to his credit the pilot is fantastic at fighting thargoids and manages it admirably, but even then he is losing his canopy at %76 hull mostly from the goids shield-breach attacks.
also note how when it takes smaller amounts of damage over a longer period of time it can be counteracted by an AFMU (tho this is still a major issue requiring time drifting aimlessly while the AFMU is engaged), wheres when it in big lumps all at once (IE almost all serous PvP with PA's and rails) it often goes immediately.

for goodness sake, i hear so much of this.
if someone would like to demonstrate how to fly the chieftain to avoid damage then i am completly happy to have a friendly PvP with them using my PA's and rail-guns to find out if there is anything to this claim.
as it stands im pretty sure that people saying that pure avoidance works don't fully understand the reality of PvP, namely that the chief is slow and pretty unable to reliably avoid most forms of damage (unlike the FDL). however i am happy to be proven wrong, namely by them showing me that they can dodge the shots of my legacy FAS
