cheftian canopy

You can't easily avoid focussed PAC rounds, especially since there's a bug that doesn't even always render the damn things when your opponent shoots them.

The only solution I can think of is to go FA off with gimbles, which lets you dodge in more chaotic ways as you are no longer forced to bring your nose to point straight at your lead reticule. Of course, then you are not hitting with anything that deals absolute damage.

The canopy is ridiculous though no doubt, I've had it go twice and in neither case did I see the shot coming. It was in PvE as well, which is practically unheard of. I'd say the Chieftain is somehow more prone to canopy loss than the DBS, and I fly my DBS without shields period.

Gimbs and lasers are not viable unfortunately.
They do too little damage and are chaffed out fast.

The meta of jousting gives very little time on target. This suits pas perfectly. Using lasers or gimbs will see you out dps'd massively even if you dont get chaffed out.

Yes dodging is always best but you don't dodge em all if your opponent is even half decent

So your stance is the canopy is ok ?

So, my stance is it's not a disaster. I said if it got a buff, it would help me out. I offered some advice for PvE, why do you feel the need to get in my stuffs? Find something else to obsess over, like the Mat Traders, or Combat Loggers.

Have a good evening cmdr.
Sorry, no hard feelings.

Really sound like a bug with the hit box for the canopy to me. That said my clipper and have it's canopy one shot by plasma rail fdl's without an MRP. If it still happens after adding one of these bad boys I'd raise a bug report.

We told them (Devs) about the very fragile glass in beta... As you can see they listened... lol... I cannot tell you how many times thus far the second my shields go down the very first thing to go is the glass and no, I don't facetank in that ship either... The other day it popped with 90% hull left while being hit from behind, explain that to me...

Yeah, it was pretty funny seeing the Chief's canopy pop so quickly on the livestream of 3.0's release day. The chat blew up about it, 90% hull IIRC. Yeah he was face-tanking, but yeesh that's some weak canopy, no two ways around it.

I have tried A6, and Bi-Weaves, they both work fine. The idea is in the description of the ship, 'avoid damage'. The aChief dances with the best of them, use that, rather than face tanking. With a C6 Bi-Weave with g3 Reinforced/Fact Charge I got through both a Dangerous 'Conda, and Deadly 'Vette Pirate Lord missions, with a full canopy. The 'Conda, I left with 100% hull. So, I would say for PvE the aChief is just fine. There are plenty of slots and power for SCB's. Effective Shielding should be decent on an aChief. I have never been able to bring myself to load up any SCB's (an old prejudice from 1.X days.).

I can imagine some c5 shield with a c6 SCB being pretty darn good with this ship. Another bit of advice is: load some MRP's I'm sure they protect the canopy some. As for PvP, that is for someone else to comment on.

I love this ship. The canopy is a joke though. Even if you fly to protect it, a la clipper plant protection prior to super pen, it consistently gets knocked out at >90% hull. And this is with 2 4D mrps. It's a large target, and the integrity is awful.

I honestly would've preferred they kept the c5 internal and strengthened the canopy instead.

In PvP - it's going to get oneshotted over and over and over again. I don't mind using all hitscan and darth vadar'ing it for my 25 minute allotment - but I wish FD would give this thing a little bit of love.

Its worse than most lakons.
Their standard trader is ok if it loses canopy as its going to run away anyway. The chief needs to stay and fight.

Its far weaker than even the vulture in my experience and that thing is a shield tank.

I just thought it was me imagining the cracking noise from the canopy being breached on all the chieftain videos on you tube.
I assumed i was wrong, as they still had full shields, Guess not.

So i guess you need a full on life support on board, so you can make it back to a station for repairs.

It definitely needs looking at. Can we get Ted Moult as a new engineer, FDev?

So how long does the canopy last against Thargoids? Since that IS the main purpose for it's creation, unless i am mistaken. I love the ship and l use it for data delivery, bounty hunting, assassinations, and basically any other combat endeavor that is expected to be short term. I would never take it to a CZ. Against NPCs I don't have an issue avoiding PA's. It's as fast as my CZ FDL cracking 530. Canopy cracked on me once and that's because i took on a assassination wing mission with it solo, but i dipped before it shattered and i returned with a different ship.
I think a weak canopy adds some spice. Nothing an A grade life support system can't help alleviate. With that said though, I do not go bug hunting.

The best way to not take damage, is to not get hit.

Focus on your drives and make the ship as light as possible. Fast regen is also your greatest friend if you do take a hit or two, but don't rely on it. You just need to learn to dance.

the prospect of a sensitive canopy is not a deal-breaker in of itself. the gunship has a weak'ish canopy.
the core issue here is that it often pops in a singular PA/rail-gun volley the moment the shields drop. this cannot be counteracted by an AFMU as that only repairs canopies that are damaged not popped.
if a canopy could only take %10 damage every 3 seconds then that would be workable and AFMU's could be used to fix it but instant blowouts don't add spice, they destroy the chieftain's PvP prospects and severely limit its PvE ones.

for NPC's PA's its less of an issue as they don't tend to fire large volleys of multiple PA's at once and their PA's do less damage than a human CMDR's engineered ones, however even then i will find myself repairing it in lenthly fights even against lasers.

as for thargoids the video below ought to show how weak it is, however to his credit the pilot is fantastic at fighting thargoids and manages it admirably, but even then he is losing his canopy at %76 hull mostly from the goids shield-breach attacks.

also note how when it takes smaller amounts of damage over a longer period of time it can be counteracted by an AFMU (tho this is still a major issue requiring time drifting aimlessly while the AFMU is engaged), wheres when it in big lumps all at once (IE almost all serous PvP with PA's and rails) it often goes immediately.

for goodness sake, i hear so much of this.
if someone would like to demonstrate how to fly the chieftain to avoid damage then i am completly happy to have a friendly PvP with them using my PA's and rail-guns to find out if there is anything to this claim.
as it stands im pretty sure that people saying that pure avoidance works don't fully understand the reality of PvP, namely that the chief is slow and pretty unable to reliably avoid most forms of damage (unlike the FDL). however i am happy to be proven wrong, namely by them showing me that they can dodge the shots of my legacy FAS

From my testing and reading tests from others, it's glaringly obvious that something is off with the Chieftain's canopy. It's not just a pvp thing, there have been numerous people I've seen talk about losing their canopy almost immediately after losing their shields the first time. It's not about whether they're being evasive enough or not.

The fact remains that the canopy has an integrity rating of 30, just like every single other ship. There's clearly an issue with it's hitbox, though... Plenty of ships with small canopies won't really have an issue because the hitbox should be drawn to match the actual canopy. But I've seen the Chieftain canopy blow out when it logically had no reason to.

I think if Fdev were to fix it, they would have to look at the hitbox for the canopy. It would also be really great if we could reinforce it somehow, whether it's by engineers or a module. I'm no game designer so I won't claim to know if this would actually work, but I don't believe in bringing a problem to the table without at least trying to come up with a solution. So this is my attempt.

Bottom line is I agree with the OP, there's something wrong with the Chieftain canopy. It doesn't matter if it's pvp or pve, we're talking about the ship itself.

All valid points.
The pilot did a marvelous job as well the way he managed the repair constantly through the engagement.

I mean build the ship accordingly, like you would a speedcourier.

Of course you can't dodge if you build a hull tank or something just as heavy. Only difference to the Courier is that you build for agility, and not raw speed.
