Well it might get us over the silly 400-450 m/s speed limit that we're stuck with. Even a piddly Saturn V could manage 11,000 m/s (25,000 mph)!

2. Railguns such as we have in ED and other settings are always recoiless. The ferrous slugs are inducted out of the weapon's barrel by electro magnets, not pushed out violently by a chemical charge as with conventional ammo. So there is no opposing force pushing the weapon platform backwards.

It doesn't. Just because it's using an electro magnet to push it out rather than a chemical charge doens't mean there'd be no recoil. It's still /something/ being pushed one way from something else.

Yeah, if all you want is 17 minutes of thrust on 2,800 Tonnes of Fuel... How much for a refuel?
