Cobra Mk IV

I bought Mercenary in 2014 to get the Free Eagle.

I bought Horizons early because they offered a ship.

It took me a long time to appreciate the Cobra 4.

Many were disappointed. Some never got the chance, like some console players.

It's been long enough that they could release the Cobra 4 as an incentive between now and 2020, or as an incentive for 2020.

Note: I was not a KS backer, nor did I buy an LEP. Maybe that's why I'm not as angry as some around here... :)

If the many, many posts on this subject are any indication, you are unique. :)
Hardly. Frontier have held to their guns for the initial promise. So @DrewCarnegie 's assessment is correct.

Whether or not people think that initial promise should never have been made, or whether it should be up for renegotiation is a different matter.

At Post # 133 in this thread, my Special Lo Mein nearly got splattered over my keyboard in hilarity. :)

Frontier can't ever release the Cobra MK4 again because it was an exclusive item. No matter how good or bad it is, it CAN't be released because breaking exclusiveness on things is a big thing (not for me personally, I don't care). There are simply no conditions under which this can be broken.
Well, releasing a slightly changed Cobra MK5 though would be a completely different thing though. But then again: why would they do that?!? :D

The idea of "exclusive item" being one-time only is nonsense. My spam folder, adverts in the print and TV/radio media, or even walking downtown looking at the window banners of auto dealers, furniture sellers, jewelers, etc. show that it simply marketing buzzwords. No more real significance then "new and improved", "healthy", or "exciting". To believe such things have actual significance is to be well-conditioned by the marketers.

I can't remember the wording so could be spouting crap but could it be the cobra MKIV was exclusive to preorders of Horizons..... But say the next expansion was Elite Dangerous atmospheres... Could FD then free the cobra IV whilst still staying honest to their promise that in ED Horizons the cobra IV was an exclusive?

Possibly the most likely outcome.

are you honestly asking if frontier could stay honest to their promise whilst breaking their promise?

dudes! what in all the friken galaxy is wrong with you!??!
you end this crap right now or i'm gonna tell mom!

No they can't. DB's statement on that was iron clad.

What I don't get is the logic behind the Cobra Mk4 anyway? if it were a shortcut purchase like getting the ship a year before everyone else as a 'test pilot' or some other narrative driven early access then it would be fine, players who missed out will eventually get it later, but to make it outright exclusive with NO possible change of it EVER being available to those who missed out was a really dumb move for future players (unless FDev didn't expect anyone to buy the game later on....) of course there was going to be people who missed out!

for me, I found Elite by accident while looking for a replacement joystick, I missed the pre-order period by a month, 1 month. so one can imagine how immensely angry I get when I see a NPC putt along past me in a Cobra MK4!!! (if I actually see one it gives me that slight sinking feeling of being cheated and I usually loose the drive to play and shut down the game soon after...cos 1 month earlier and I'd have it, 1 month....) , sure the thing is a bit of a box, but the fact that I will never own one due to a poorly conceived exclusive package will always haunt me for every year that I own this game....

so needless to say I hope they never ever do this sort of thing again, they could bring back the MK4 maybe as next year's exclusive (just to give players a chance, but given the circumstances of FDev's promise i'd say that is highly unlikely). if they add something exclusive they could make it a decal or something (all cool to look at, but in the end nobody is going to whine about not getting a decal).

I will always be loyal to this game for many years, and buy all the DLCs and such because they are awesome! in fact the MK4 is my only utter hate aspect of this game... the fact that they ensured no one will have it if they missed out and then give it to NPCs is like extending a huge middle finger to everyone who missed out. if they removed CM4 NPCs i'd be 'slightly' less upset.

I keep thinking '1 month, 1 month, 1 month' in the back of my head now..... I think I will get a nice strong drink now.... :D

They did it in the past, on a whim, with the flag paint jobs 🤨 I see no reason why they won't do it again.

what was the deal there? I never really payed any attention to paint jobs until much later on...

If this is true, then I guess there is hope. I mean I really can't see this being much of a legal issue anyway if they did add it. (if players payed $20 extra for the Cobra MK4 then yeah, very big deal!!) despite it being registered as exclusive I don't think there were any 'sign here' binding contracts that came with it. while it will be a slight slap in the face to those who got the pre-order years ago, it will be a less forceful one as to what is applied to the rest of the community who didn't.

I believe they could add it right now to main game and not a single thing could be done about it, and if anyone contested it legally there'd be no court on the planet that would take their case seriously... they'd be laughed out the door.

Down side is that it would look kinda bad for FDev going back on their promises... I do value honour quite highly.

The played the "exclusive only meant timed exclusive" card and got hammered for it. Because it was never indicated anywhere that it was a "timed exclusive". When they pulled the same trick with the Wireframe Cobra they were (rightly imo) flamed. In both those instances they didn't have a clearly expressed, iron clad statement from the CEO of the company himself. For some reason people let the flag paints pass.

The flag paint jobs - back then only for vipers - where limited edition items you could buy for € 5,- a piece. 8 months later they were reintroduced and sold for € 3,-
I still have a bloody pitchfork laying around here somewhere.
