I've come across a few threads that have been around for a while asking for the ability to toggle cockpit lighting and that's exactly what I'm here to bring up again, but with some additional flair.
First off, the cockpit lights are really bright in some ships. For instance, the Krait MkII has lights in the canopy corners that are pointing right in your face. These can be downright annoying. But it's not just about the cosmetic aspect, it should be about the functional aspect as well. By disabling the interior cockpit lights, you should be able to improve your sight of the exterior in the dark. Think about the real-life example of standing at a window at night. If the lights in your home are on and it's dark outside, your visibility to the outside is extremely diminished. However, if you turn off your lights and make it darker inside than outside, you can suddenly see MUCH more of the outside world. Since this game is based in the darkness of space, it makes a lot of sense to be able to disable these lights to improve your sight.
Now that said, I do also want to speak to the cosmetic nature of this ability. A lot of people love to just float through space and appreciate the vistas. Being able to turn off the cockpit lights would perhaps provide pilots with an even cleaner view of space without having to break the immersion by entering into the camera mode. In addition to this, I think pilots should also have the ability to toggle off the entire HUD as well as the interior cockpit lights. It would give the feeling of flying completely manually through the dark, like a sailboat at sea.
