Collection of Powerplay Changes of Interest to Explorers

On my MacBook, some large stars are already so bright, I have sunglasses sitting next to my keyboard...

Lol I'm glad you are vulnerable to the illusion of using contrast to mimic brightness that display technology relies on. When I was like 17 and was thinking about becoming a big physics researcher, I had this goal of inventing a technology of screen that displays real brightness. Imagine the screen wasn't uniform brightness all over, with colour and shade being the only variables. If an image showed the sun, that part of the screen would actually be really bright. It's one of the next steps in video quality, but alas, I quit my degree for various reasons and elected for a life of fulfilment through small things rather than world changing things. Maybe one day someone will come up with that...

So YOU'RE to blame for the lack of realism in my life! :p

oh wait...

It sounds like this means that, unlike right now - where all stars look the same once you are really far away from them - stars will all look different when you are really far from them. So a class O hypergiant at 1,000,000ls will look different to a brown dwarf at 10,000ls, where as right now they look identical apart from the colour.

So no, I don't think it applies to the skybox at all, just stars within the current system. But I think it sounds awesome. I've always hated the fact that all stars are the same once you get far enough away from them.

Can a beta tester actually confirm this?

Of note is also the reputation decay system. Can't wait to lose most of my rep every time I take a lengthy exploration trip.

Confirmed it wont apply to Minor Factions, only Powers and Major, so thats fine in my book. As long as all my Prison Colony buddies stay Allied, I am happy.

And as long as this doesn't retract permit use, lol.

(I have yet to obtain permits so I cannot comment based on knowing whether or not they are all obtained through major or minor factions)

Just incase you missed this kaii, as I know your sat on a load of exploration data
David's response doesn't come across 100% confident to me that you will get to keep your data after the update

Sorry can't do a proper quote as the thread has been closed

Thanks!!

David's response
No - I don't think so at least - it is just the in-progress missions that will be wiped because they now work differently.

The Diamondback is the slowest scooping ship in the game next to the sidewinder because it is the only one with an undersized scoop by design. So it's moderate range isn't really an asset for exploring purposes. Especially since the biggest challenge for a starting explorer is finding a spot that hasn't been tagged already. Also it doesn't have as many important component slots as the adder or the cobra. So it can't slot enough repair models and scanners. I would put it dead last on the list.

Sorry this should have been said first but: thank you OP!

Whilst I agree with you in some ways, and disagree in others, I think we'll both be happy to hear this:

David Braben said:
Yes. There are two Diamondbacks. The Diamondback Explorer is the ship we showed in concept art back in April, and the Diamondback Scout is a cut-down cheaper ship made by Lakon for the Federal military.

Though, I think it is actually meant to be the Allianc emilitary, seeing as it was an Alliance CG, but nevermind, the point of the post stands.

Seems like some people's prayers have been heard:

It's bigger and slower, there is still no parity between scoop and FSD. It will suit some people, but not me at all, unfortunately. I was really excited when I heard this was coming out, but the let down of the undersized internals yet again squashed my hopes of replacing my Asp. I will definitely grab the Scout version though, but not for exploring. Just for zooming around a RES or playing chicken with CMDR pirates by interdicting them and wasting their time.

Yeah, I agree. I love nearly everything about it (and the Scout too). It looks and sounds amazing! It feels lived in, kind of like a Viper. Paint chipped in the cockpit, none of this shiny Gutamaya stuff (says the guy that's been in a Clipper for 5 weeks). It's got personality! I absolutely love the design. A+

I took it for a quick spin to Maia last night to see if I could tolerate a 4A fuel scoop. Well, I'm not so sure I can. Maybe I've been spoiled by a B6 in my Asp or the D7 in my Clipper, but it's ridiculously slow. The 32t fuel tank kind of makes up for it in a way. Skimming each star will still get you a few tons of fuel and there's usually something worth stopping for every 10 jumps or so which is a perfect time to top up the tank. So it kind of works. It's also too bad you can't load up to be a Fuel Rat without sacrificing an AFMU. Lots of thought to be put into your build. I like that part!

In other news...

-- When filtering the Galaxy Map by star type, it now renders stars in a sphere. The size of the sphere seems to directly relate to the amount of stars in it. In civilized space the radius is 100Ly+. In the core the radius is 10Ly, which is really weird. Gone are the giant cubes of madness. Instead all you see is a tiny little bubble. I'm not sure I like it. It's very claustrophobic. I like being able to see big cubes at a time. It'll be a lot harder to map out badlands and things like that.

-- The crazy "UFO" dancing lights made an appearance when I was in Maia. And yes, I mean lights. There were TWO! One was orange and one was white. They're bigger and more glowy than they used to be.

-- Picking a target from the System Map still kills your route.

I think I had more things to mention but I'm drawing a blank right now.

When I am LARPing, you can judge a good scout by the number of pockets they have. Neither DBS or DBE have enough pockets.

I take it you mean "No more Mr Nice Guyus" ?

Sorry couldn't resist.

Is this like a twinkly star that doesn't move with the rest of the background stars? I just saw one and wondered what it was. BTW I'm in 1.2.

Sure is! It moves with the camera, so every tiny movement I made with TrackIR made them zip all over the place. Even the vibration of the ship makes it dance. It's the best bug ever! I hope they never get rid of it. I did not submit a bug report. They're our only companion out there...
