Colossal announcement at Gamescom in two weeks' time

Agreed. I'm primarily an explorer and I don't particularly want planetary landings mainly because it would be procedurally generated and so boring after a short while (like exploration has become for me).

Well with an imagination like that, I am glad you are not in charge of designing the environments ;P I think that FD can pull it off well enough to be interesting for quite a long time. And of course they will keep adding new content to keep it interesting, just as they always do.

Not sure if I am being insulted or not and whether I should add you to my ad hominem ignore list (currently, just have Ziggy in there; he's probably lonely). But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt cuz of the wink. (Sorry, at age 51 I am a long time veteran of the Forum Wars and I've long since learned that as soon as anyone engages in an ad hominem, they've demonstrated they're not worth a damn and it's just best to put them on ignore and forget about them.)

But on topic...

I certainly hope FD will "pull it off". But I've been jaded by too many game developers in the past (usually a ginormous mismatch between what they say and what they actually deliver) and I've become a bit cynical in my old age, that's for sure.

Yah, I don't get it. I mean, I get it, flying near the surface would be fun but the gameplay to go with it will be some time off, I think. Besides, if you want to do planetary landings, Space Engine is free (though you should donate).

this so much. I have planetary landing in Space Engine all the time and it´s a nice view and all but you can´t actually do anything with it.
I think if they add planetary landings it will be nothing like No Mans Sky, you won´t get out and grab a gun and get some procedural lifeforms, 110% sure nothing of that will happen with E.D anytime soon.

that´s the nature of random things, your brain notices the patterns very soon and when you´ve seen 10 of any system/planet/moon you´ve seen them all

Not an insult. Just trying to stay optimistic. I know exactly what you mean about disappointment, and I am definitely not expecting any miracles. However, given what FD has already accomplished, I think we can still hope for something reasonably breathtaking on a planets surface. One thing I am not sure about is gameplay. They are great at combat, but not so hot on making the other aspects of play engaging or addictive. They have plenty of time to get it right eventually though. It might just take a while. And more money of course. But given what people are willing to dish out for Star Citizen, I think the "political will" is there to support their efforts.

Yeah, I can agree with all of that. This game is amazing in many ways and I don't doubt combat is awesome. I just get the feeling they've bit off a bit more than they can chew and are playing catch up. I just hope they don't rush it. And if there are financial constraints, well, is it possible to go back into kickstarter mode or add a kickstarter for big changes? Probably not.

Or play a flight simulator lol

Yeah, but who wants to look at dumb old Earth sky every day. ;)

If you only want to play 1/3 or 1/2 of a space sim then you are kind of missing the point of ED. A fully interactive galaxy where we can go anywhere, do anything, be anyone, or even just putz around in a space station if that is your thing. Living fully immersed in space... that is the Dream!

100% agree. I just think the clamoring for PL now is premature. Let's get a finished space game going, then we can do the planet stuff.

NMS looks too cartoony for me to take it seriously. It looks like a kids game to me, however, I'd like to be proven wrong when I can get my hands on a PC demo. Though, I will fall out of my chair when I find a planet named by a player who thought BoobsRadley is a great name for a palnet.

Speculation mixed with wishful thinking and a dash of conjecture. My favourite recipe. ;)
If I had to take a guess, my money would be on a preview of planetary landings for the first paid expansion.

I think players are in a rush, and FD is actually taking lots of measured strategic steps to keep things active and funded while they are in constant process of development. So I am not worried, as their strategies all seem to be working, even the fiasco PP and the controversial CQC have done quite a bit to increase player involvement and new player influx. Add to this the fact that they pulled one of their best AI programmers away from combat is a great sign imo. Possibly to help enrich other aspects of gameplay that need much more attention, if you follow her twitter feed it kind of hints at this.

Clamouring? FD seems to be following their original plan quite closely and developing everything in parallel stages. Which means that PL has probably been in the works for a long time already. I mean if the people making NMS can spit out a game that looks that cheesy and yet still has some marginal appeal to older players, then imagine what a proper team like FD could do?

I'd like to see (on the Xbox) paid for paint jobs as grey is starting to get boring, perhaps even ti be able to fully customize the exterior design of your ship such as own placement of decals and text etc.

Be able to hire NPC wings.

Perhaps the ability to hire the use if a capital ship to duke it out in PP conflict zones (those who have played BSG Online will know what I mean).

Better damage engine, perhaps holes in Hull, chunks being off your ship, you know more visible ship damage.

More randomness to systems, other bases, derelicts, comets, rogue asteroids etc.

Multi step missions, escorts missions, possibly planetary defence missions.

Guys... I really don't like to play devil's advocate here, but... remember how excited they were about Community Goals? How much they hyped Powerplay? Remember how proud they were to announce CQC?

Words like "we are really excited about this new coming update..." and "we really worked hard on this and it's something that is super important to us..." .... do they ring a bell?

I would not get too excited about this huge announcement that is supposed to come. I predict that it will most likely be just another ginormous disappointment. Sorry, but that's how I have come to feel about this game. :-(

It has to be the first expansion, so as they've ruled out First Person, I'm thinking planetary landings with an intended release in December 2016.

Hmmm... ok, they ruled out first person. So, assuming it's planetary landing. What do you do once you landed? If there isn't any first person, you can't get out of your ship and walk around, right?

Planetary landing.

It's the next thing after the Xbox release that guarantees FD another influx of money.

I can be well wrong but, as another influx of money, what about ED on Playstation?

I've typed and deleted several missives, including one that would've been the first post.

So I've settled on this somewhat optimistic quote of the FD GalNet feed this week, and hope it is a hint that FD will at minimum reassure the community of the "direction of the game" starting at Gamescom. One can always hope.

"In scenes reminiscent of January, dignitaries and guests from the farthest reaches of the Empire have started arriving on Capitol. Since the Emperor’s recovery, there has been a marked improvement in the mood of the citizenry as they see this as an end to the uncertainty over the past several months. In a move well received by the populace, Chancellor Anders Blaine has declared that the wedding day will be a public holiday so that all may celebrate along with the Emperor and his family.
