Audio NPC messages instead of text and an idea for random radio chatter

I think it would add to the immersion a lot if we would get audible messages from let's say security vessels and other NPC ships, rather than these weirdly worded chat messages.

Traffic control radio chatter around stations would be nice, so you actually get an idea of busy docking procedures ongoing.

For everybody, who feels the same way, you might want to visit www.liveatc.net and have it stream audio in the background while playing playing ED.

Here you can listen to earthly air traffic control from a variety of worldwide airports. For me this adds to the immersion immensely.

Again, I'd like to hear more from the the game what's going on around me, rather than reading chats. Maybe this is something that FD might want to look into.

Cheers

Good idea, it's been brought up many many times in the past. It "may" be on the "list" but, I wouldn't hold my breath.

+1 I always liked the idea of at least having some kind of ATC on docking

"You at clear to proceed to pad 19" type stuff. And hear it in the background as well. Would make stations feel even more alive.

Maybe when we get planetary landings though?

NPC messages recorded by same guys will become very tiredsome very very fast. Alternative would be voice synth, but we aren't there yet (FD actually planned to use that at some point).

I think this is quite accurate. I'd love the idea of it though and reckon that if implemented the "AI" voice synth could be very, very cool. Although on the other hand I never get that tired of the same stock responses in Voice attack and in stations...

I quite liked the chatter in Freelancer. But this would mean that NPCs in ED will need some sensible life with destinations.

I pitched idea in API thread about having some sort of output about what text is said by NPCs, so you could hook some voice synth there in future.

I'm on the fence. Part of me would think it would be cool, the other part knows that it'd need to be voice acted and that takes time. I wouldn't settle for voice synth.

That would actually be awesome! I totally second that. :)

I would also like to have traffic control chatter when reaching relevant proximity to space stations.

Radio chatter !

Hello everyone,

First i love Elite.
Second Elite feels a bit empty to me, not by lack of players but just because you hear nothing in game.

I would love to see the introduction of active radio chatter. If you want to know what i mean fire up the game Freelancer.
In freelancer once you get into combat with NPC's you hear them calling for help, designating targets, shouting just nonsense at you etc. It feels more active, more vibrant.
If you are in deep space on the other hand and no-one is around you hear nothing, which is perfect.
On the other hand if you approach stations, police, cargo runners, inhabited planets, ... you can hear :

* other npc's asking clearance to dock or asking to undock.
* You can hear the station giving permission to dock to other NPC's (the npc's have random codes/numbers as names i believe)
* Police ask and scan others and you can hear them asking to stand down or give clearance to proceed.
* You can hear the NPC's indicating to what system / station they are going to jump or dock (might be hard to do here since its so big !)
* You can just hear random chatting when around other NPC's
* I believe cargo trains ask for escorts to security vessels etc ...

In short, that game felt so much alive because everything around you seemed to be active, everyone seemed to have a goal or purpose.
On top of that the radio chatter was in the background, so it never got annoying to me since it was more of a sort of background noise and if you listened to it you could hear what was going on.

I love Elite, but its getting lonely, hunting in a resource collection site with a BIG number of ships around and all you hear is just gunfire and a ship exploding. The only feedback you get is just the random messages in chat but noone pays much attention to those.

Please, i would love it if that gets integrated.

What do you guys think ?

This has always been one of the big factors that helped flight simulators come to life. For me anyways. I fully endorse.

[Suggestion] Passenger chatter

I've read that passenger-carrying will one day be a possible career choice for Commanders with ships like the Orca, with taxi and luxury cruise missions, etc. While I'm sure it will be profitable, I think it could get rather boring, so why not liven up the journey with comments from your passengers in your comms screen?

e.g.
When launching:
"Shouldn't my husband/wife be on board by now?"
"Stop! I forgot to pack my dress shoes!"
"Can I get a drink back here?"
"Can I go to the bathroom?"

When manoeuvring/boosting/rolling:
"What's with all the sudden turns? Do you even know where you're going?"
"I'm gonna be sick!"
"Oh my gods, we're all gonna die!"
"Wheeeeeeeeeeee!"
"Can I get a drink back here?"
"You're going too fast!"
"Can I take my kid to the bathroom?"
"Come on! I'm trying to get some sleep here."

In SC:
"Are we there yet?
"Hey, is that a ringed planet? Can we stop there and have a look?"
"I wanna see a pirate."
"Can I get a drink back here?"

While fuel scooping:
"Can you turn up the air conditioning please?"
"My eyes! are you trying to blind us?"
It's too hot!"
You're too close!"
"Can I get a drink back here?"
"Oh my gods, we're all gonna die!"
"Can I take my wife to the bathroom, nudge nudge, wink wink?"

When landing:
"Shouldn't your landing gear be down by now?"
"Why do we have to park right at the back? I didn't pay all that money for this!"
"Oh, my gods, we're all gonna die!"
"Call that a landing? I nearly broke my teeth!"
"Thank all the local gods THAT's over!"
"Where did you learn to fly? The Lakon Crash-Test Facility?"

Feel free to add more suggestions :)

After in flight meal
"Why has everyone else fallen asleep"
"Why is the cabin depressurising"
"What does *Prepare to eject cargo* mean"
:D

You forgot: When landing.
Glad that's over, maybe now I can get that damned drink I've been asking for since we left.

SUggestion - Ambient (Background) Chatter

Elite is a very quiet game. NPC's only ever communicate with the player by sending chat messages in text. I think this needs to change.

When inside a RES or USS area, I would love to hear ambient chatter over open comms. Maybe its a merchant Wing trying to form up for their next Hyperspace jump. Or trying to coordinate with their escorts for same. Maybe inside a RES, miners are communicating with system security or their escorts. Or one another. Even an occasional, verbal warning to the player to 'target someone else, Commander, I'm clean' or some such.

I think this would go very far toward enhancing immersion in the game world. When landing we can hear the station announcements. How about actually hearing station control talking to ships about landing, taking off, clearing docks, etc? This would do wonders to give the game some flavor and depth, and hardly requires professional voice acting to achieve.

+1! Would totally love this. Just imagine that - pursuing a pirate, who's screaming to you over the voice-comms and when you blow him up, there's just static :D

Filter NPC Chatter

This should be pretty straight forward, but since I do a lot of bounty hunting it kind of gets pretty annoying after a while. All of these wanted sidewinder NPC's calling me a greenhorn, kind of wears on me.

I mean we can already filter player direct chat, why not NPC direct chat as well?

Maybe not even all NPC chat, but just combat messages would be good.
