Communicating in game - Do you chat with strangers? Friends only?

The most amazing thing I had with comms, was finding a cmdr at the center of the galaxy in my first visit, we chatted a little bit, and was really fun and really great to find someone so far out the earth.

Said that, I freaking hate that there are no CMDR CHaracter sit at the drivers place.

They are there. They're just shy, so they are hiding behind the seat.

I always chat to CMDRs I see, if they answer my initial hail, gained many things from doing this including trade routes and faction manipulation shared, combat help and new friends.

I do try and chat on occasion especially when I run into a CMDR in unexpected places.
Today I took my Cobra to the Old Worlds to pick up some rares... okay, actually I was just trolling for some contact with other CMDRs and knew there would be plenty of other folks out there. Unfortunately nobody would interdict me and I made sure to go real slow so they could get behind me.
The I saw him... a CMDR in a Viper and WANTED with a 84,000cr bounty on his head. So... I interdicted him.
We both squared off and I sent him, "That's a nice bounty on your head."
He replied, "Yeah. Are you sure you want to try and claim it? You've only got two lasers."
I answered, "What the heck? I'm game if you are."
"Okay," he said. "Open fire when you're ready."
About 40 seconds later I was paying the insurance man 400,000cr. After kicking lots of NPCs in the teeth it was a good reminder that I'm not the baddest kid on the block.

I usually throw a hello and if folks respond, i'll ask them how its going. I got chatting to a fellow cmdr about the FDL last - good fun. The night before a Sidewinder pilot told me of how he just escaped from pirates with a damaged ship.

The interaction really brings the game to life for me.

TRy to (mostly chat whilst waiting for pads to open/become available at outposts) but often it doesnt work..The whole chat thing really needs shaking up - why do you have to target just for general chat is it a limitation of p2p

I try to text a quick hello but as I play exclusively in vr its a bit of a pain.

I make more of an effort of off the beaten track rather than at say leesti where its busy.

I always try to respond to others however unless I am tied up in a fight

If I see a CMDR in game I send an opening hello. If I get chat back then I add them to the Friend list. If no reply then I don't press for a response because some simply don't want to engage and that's fine :)

I will always say good evening, and usually get a good evening back. If I get more than a good evening then I will stop and chat, but usually leave it up to the individual. Dont want to push it, otherwise I might get a "Cant you see I am *!!** busy!"

Other players will always get a "greetings commander" if I see them pass close by.

I don't expect a reply, as I know docking etc requires full attention.

I'm happy to chat to CMDRs I meet. I'm more likely to open hailing frequencies myself in a remote system, as it's nice to see other people out there in the dark.

I've been doing a bit of trading recently, so I've been warning fellow truckers of CMDR-pirates, when I encounter them too.

When bounty hunting, I've dropped into Low Energy Wakes to offer my help to other CMDRs, and have had other CMDRs come to help me, similarly.

As for voice comms, I only fish out my mic if RL friends are playing with me: however I love the voice comms sound effects!

So which button do I press to chat? Playing with rift and hotas, all things involving keyboard are a bit difficult. Can you set a hotkey on the hotas to open chat window?

I do not talk to any strangers, unless I am docked and in the hangar.

If open world pvp games of any type have taught me only one thing, it is that 'friendly?' is an attempt to get your hands off of your controls to gain the early initiative in conflict, and so far Elite: Dangerous has been no exception to that rule.

I like to think that your commander name is intended to have the same effect.

"Wait, is that Bieber? I can't fire on bieber..."

"Missile lock! Incoming!"

"Oh cru...."

Being out on the fringes I don't see too many other Cmdrs but I'll always reply to a 'hi' or similar. Just gimme a minute as I've not quite got the hang of 'replyin an flyin' yet. Almost battered into the station a couple of times whilst trying to type - doh. :D

Hhehehe

Took me a while to realise that your ship carried on flying when you accessed the cockpit menus! Very nearly found myself in a sun.

Hold the "UI Focus" button, and select up on your hat button to call up the Comms menu.

I would love to chat more, but the comms control is so fiddly.

Meanwhile I'm also trying to fly a ship with 6 axis of freedom, target bad guys, target subsystems, manage my power distribution systems, say out of the line of fire, monitor my shield strength, select fire controls, and so on and so on.........

Responding to an incoming text comm should be a one click affair.

unfortunately its not at this time.
