No, at least not exclusively. Read the OP.

I had and have done so again just now and I stand by what I asked. You have put so many caveats in as to what 'compete' might stand for that it is not at all clear what you are asking. I could cooperate with others to compete for a station etc.

You may want to rethink not having an option for those of us who just 'play' i.e. Explorers - they are competing against no-one that I know of and a huge number of them also fly alone so no cooperation is required.

Maybe clearer definitions next time :)

I enjoy wing fights and voted 'co-operate' because it is much more fun fighting in a wing than by yourself. I do like the competition component though; you fight to win after all.

Fairly sure a large amount of explorers compete for the first discovered tag.

I chose, and always will choose cooperation over competition.

I'm against competition on a philosophical level. Human to human competition, in any shape or form, is an abomination of actual competition for survival. We implement rules and boundaries to what is ethical, what is humanitarian etc. Even in games, we strive for equality and balance, where none of it has any place in nature. In nature, balance emerges because physics. It balances out because the capable survive and the incapable die. Since we are so far above any natural competition in real life, as long as we cooperate and live in stable societies, all the competition we invent for fun is nothing more than a weak nod to our ancient nature of cold blooded survivors.

Cooperation is our natural state in real life, after millennia of evolution, even if some of us are not aware of it. That's why we apply for jobs or try to create our own and have other people work with us in cooperation instead of trying to bash each other's face in for a fruit tree on a hill.

Not really. Either it's already discovered, or you are on a long trip and don't run back to sell the data at the end of every day. Not a lot of competition there.

While I generally play the game on my own, only occasionally winging up or even talking to anyone (lack of friends who play, odd play times when I do) I still prefer to cooperate whenever I can. Often, in any sort of multiplayer game, I play a more support or team based character often designing my entire skill tree, skill list, equipment, etc around other players (most notably my gaming partner and girlfriend of 18 years - unfortunately she can't pilot any ship in Elite so won't be making an appearance here any time soon). There is still an element of competition involved though, normally getting to a certain level first, most kills or other trivial achievements but this has diminished greatly over the past few years no doubt in part to my 14 year old daughter slaughtering me (leaderboard wise) in a game of CoD:AW - something which I am hesitant in admitting (normally it's due to the baby waking up or I had something in my eye and my dodgy eyesight and colour blindness prevents me from identifying friend and foe instantly - you know whatever age or parent related excuse I can use).

Even when playing deathmatch style games I generally turn to team orientated versions, cooperating to win to put it simply.

Got to admit though, I have recently decided to try my hand at Elite racing - but due to odd play times missed the last race (not that I would really be competing, more cooperating to make up the numbers ;))

I admit I thought the same when I started the game and rushed back (in all honesty, I wasn't far from the bubble) to cash in my very first discovery tag so nobody would steal it. But after this one, I just went, "Oh, nobody scanned that one." And since I explore for science, not for credits, I often get the leftover moons from my predecessors.

In that case it's a cooperate : we all cooperate to scan whole systems ! :)

Would love to play open and stumble across a small group of players/wing attacking a planetary outpost, fly in to help out, say over comms, "Fly safe commanders!", before I low wake out. :)

I prefer cooperation.
I've played so many purely competitive Multiplayer games that I've grown tired of the "same old".

Naturally, both Coop and Competition can and will intermix at times, no later than conflicts of Interest arise between Groups.

I like both, but if I have to choose? Competition.

Its only when we test ourselves against others (and against our past selves) that we rise to new personal heights. Of course that is my selfish individualist side talking. I also think that cooperation should be the foundation of any society. But personally, I like to grow and learn above all else. And in most cases that requires some form of competition to avoid stagnation.

I have voted but I'm not sure what this poll is supposed to clarify. You can see from the answers that there is not much distinction between the options. At the same time, people who only look at the title and poll results may jump to the conclusion that co-operation means PVE and competition means PVP, giving them the wrong idea. So... What do the results so far tell you about the player community?

Wow - Cooperate is overwhelmingly leading this poll... I think it's clear the audience playing Elite is rather non-competitive or would prefer to be cooperative, however I certainly don't think competition should be removed from the game entirely.

It means nothing of the sort. Its two options presented as intentionally mutually exclusive. The fact remains that nearly every aspect of ED is competitive, even if its just against the environment (although this still impacts other players).

If the poll had had the option of "co-operate whilst competing" then it would have been radically different. As it stands it looks like 90%+ of players simply log in and sit in a station for all of their time.

Its not possible to only co-operate in ED, Nonsense poll is nonsense.

Forum population is... like nothing.

Also the Poll itself forces a binary choice when they aren't binary at all, competition and cooperation aren't mutually exclusive, anyone knows that.
