Competition: Your Fondest Frontier Memory!

In the lead up to the Premonition Event I befriended one of the organizers, Isaiah Evanson. At the time he was the Deputy Wing Commander for Loren's Legion while I was the Wing Commander of Newton's Fusiliers. Sadly, we were separated by platform (he was on PC and I was on XBOX) but we didn't let that stop us from becoming the best of pals.

To make a longer story shorter about 10 months later I started a PC account. The first moment we met up in game was pretty special. Went bounty hunting in a Haz Res with him and his FDL and me in an A-rated Sidewinder.

This game is one of the greatest I have ever experienced because of the friends (and enemies!) I've made.

Cheers, FDEV. Never stop being you.

I remember back when I was at work. It was a rough day, but I was taking a moment to relax in front of a window. I had glanced at my phone and took a look at Reddit, only to find the news that stations were under attack after a long drawn-out escalation of events with Thargoids. I remember reading as much as I could, floored at some of the youtube videos I was able to take in on a tiny little phone screen and reading what people were doing to respond. I got home and immediately fitted an emergency response ship and worked to evacuate as best as possible. This was (as far as I knew) the first major aggression we saw from Thargoids and it was a mix of frightening and exciting at the time just what was happening.

I watch the show every November, but there's only so many bugs you can take... Oh sorry we're not talking about 'I'm a Celeb''? ;)

Seriously though, I've played Elite since it first came out on the Amiga and loved every minute I played on it, I still love it now. BUT the recent changes have changed the game too much for me. So sadly I've boxed my controllers. But it has been a long, wonderful and happy journey through the different guises of the galaxy.

Stay safe out there Commanders. Adios o7

"Some time" ago, I saved up enough money to buy an unknown game which was getting mixed reviews, raced to WHSmith after school on my bike and bought the only copy of Elite on the shelf.
This was a good plan apparently because my schoolmate who took the bus didn't get to play that day.

Now we live 8,500 miles apart and wing up fairly regularly, the graphics and sound have changed but the gameplay is still as absorbing as ever.
Thank you Frontier.

[edit] The Atari version worked best with 3 commanders playing on one keyboard/mouse

I’d have to say, My fondest memory in a Frontier game is when i went to Colonia for the first time in Elite: Dangerous. When i first set out on this seemingly tremendous task, I was expecting it to be rather boring. With a 30ly jump range, it was over 500 jumps and i was sure it would be rather bland. But as i jumped from system to system, i found new and wonderful things i would have never expected, i found really cool looking planets and star formations and things that looked marvellous. When i was nearly there, the whole sky was littered with incredibly bright stars, and it looked awesome. When i got to Colonia, i felt a massive sense of relief, and a kind of sadness that it had to end there. The journey back wasn’t as interesting, but it did give me time to clear my head. Overall, the trip to Colonia was noice 👌🏼

I just got enough money to purchase an anaconda and outfitted it for exploration right out of the gate I figured I'd land on a planet and explore a little needless to say I crashed into the planet and bounced what a sight that was I've been playing the game off and on since I got it for the computer 3 years ago and just bought it for my xbox I love this game not many games keep me coming back day after day year after year so much to do new stuff added all the time thanks for this great game and happy 25 years you guys rock

MY DREAM COME TRUE

When I was young, I worked hard doing the paper boy, earning money to buy my first computer, an Atari STe. One day, I saw in a magazine, Frontier Elite 2 and I dreamed to have this game. I couldn’t find it in my local store, the only place that was selling Atari computer game. Here in Canada, Atari was not as popular like in Europe.

Many years later, when my father bought a PC, I finally had the chance to play my dream game, but with no luck, the computer was too modern to boot the game in dos mode. I’ve tried the best I could with my limited knowledge at the time, but with no success.

Again, a couple years later, me and my father where at a computer convention and with all the luck in the world I’ve stumble to a box with tons of copy of Frontier First Encounter. I didn’t even know that there was a sequel! Finally, my dream came true, after all those years!

This game, this galaxy, this adventure was exactly how I’ve imagined it when I first read about it in the magazine. This became my best beloved game, surpassing all the other space game that didn’t come close in term of science and imagination. I played hundreds and hundreds hours, for years and never felt other space game came close to the scope and the feeling of freedom like FFE.

But this story doesn’t stop here, no no…

By then, I had access to internet and I heard about the rumor that David Braben was thinking about making Elite 4. So, the dream continued for me, hoping for years that this could become true. After all those years of personal struggle, like we all have, this was another beautiful dream to hope for, and I stayed faithful to the idea that Elite deserved another chapter.

When I’ve saw that David decided to make this a reality, this was pure joy and even tears…, yes and I am not shy to say this because this touched something of my childhood. For people that love this game and have an history like me with it, it’s even more enjoyable because of all the history behind.

I had another challenge, because I had not an enough powerful computer to run the game, so I’ve listened for around three years everything about this game. One day, my father gave me is old Laptop and I’ve decided to drill hole in it, changing the thermal paste, putting four fan underneath, playing with configuration in deep so I could play on minimal setting…

I had the chance to have very open minded parent. This helped me to be as open minded, even if we all had our very hard struggle each of us. I did not have an easy childhood, and I am a survivor in a lot of ways. This game gave me a lot of peace to feel in a world when I could be free.

Elite Dangerous is my best game, my best time when I want to feel good and relax. I feel that all the new blood in the FDev family all understand the philosophy of David Braben and I have a really good time to listen to Ed, Will, Adam and all the other good people in Frontier Development. Of course, I am a fanboy…, how could I not be?!

This year, I want to make another dream come true. I am making change in my bad habits and I am putting money aside so I can buy another computer so I can play Elite in VR. This will take time, and I can only buy on piece a month. I’ve already manage to buy a new case and a power supply the last two month.

So here it is. My memory of Elite and the way you’ve made my life happier.

To all of you, forum member, commander, FDev and of course David Braben, I send you my best wishes for this new years and for a lot of other good one. Happy celebration day Frontier Development and thank you from all my heart for all the fun, the excitement, the peace and of course, Elite 4.

Commander Sad Sky, Paul.

Sorry for my English : )

The first time I started Elite Dangerous in VR. It was so cool to see the cockpit, but when I moved the pad up to launch position and saw the enormity of the docking bay, my jaw dropped. I also got a little dizzy. I switched to my racing eagle, flew to the nearest planet, and spent a few hours zipping through canyons.

Although I only have a year or so with Elite Dangerous under my belt, my favorite memory was the first time I did a planetary landing after installing Horizons. The flight in was hairy to say the least but I somehow managed not to pancake my Cobra. The view from the cockpit of the moon-like surface with mountains in the background and binary red suns on the horizon was totally jaw dropping. I wish I would have taken the time to make some screen shots but was too busy having fun in my SRV and low g antics. Thanks for the memories Frontier, Happy 25!

This is a hard one. Which was my fondest memory? Was it back in the day on my venerable Commodore 64? Was it the first time I fired up Frontier Elite II on my Amiga? Hard to decide.

Let's take a trip back on memory lane. 25 years ago, my best friend from school and I would spend many nights trying to survive long enough in the original Elite for the C64 in order to purchase the all important docking computer. Commanders in ED have no idea what was truly dangerous. Attempting to dock with a digital joystick (vs Analog) or just the keyboard (no mouse on the C64) was truly a dangerous task. I cannot begin to count the number of times we had start over from 100 credits and start the process all over again after splattering all over the side of the station.

Docking was a milestone. Staying alive long enough to build up enough credits for the docking computer? That was a major accomplishment. After that, one level of danger was (mostly) removed.

My fondest memory? When my friend and I managed that last successful dock with the trade goods that allowed us to purchase the docking computer for our Cobra. Now, he and I are both enjoying Elite Dangerous.

FLy Safe commanders... and if that isn't your style... Fly DANGEROUS!

Finally Docking at a spaceport the first time I launched Elite Dangerous. I spent 30 mins trying to figure out what I was doing wrong then realized I was facing the wrong direction. DUH. Relief and success.

My first contact with Elite was on ZX-Spectrum in 1992. Fly across star, many starship and big Galaxy and sigh of relief after a successful landing on starport

Wow elite has been with me a long time ,first time I see it was on a mates bbc micro computer when I was in school , I had a c64 at time so I got it for the c64 then I got into pcs , elite plus ,Frontier elite 2 , Frontier: First Encounters then Elite dangerous

Anyway I'm side tracking a bit , My best memory was when I got elite 2 being able to land an planets and explore a galaxy on a game that was on just one disk ! just taking off for the first time was mind blowing seeing the atmosphere chance and docking at a space station seeing the extra detail , Still things have changed again but elite 2 was just amazing to me

My first vivid memory of the Orginal Elite was the moment after I had exited the station in my shiny new cobra and not having a single clue as to handle the beast. Finally figured out how to plot and jump to a near planet and then thinking all was good with the world, I ran across a pirate in a viper who had me in several seconds .... press the spacebar , commander.

Favorite memory of Elite

My favorite memory of Elite? Goes back to my college days, running the game from a Commodore 64 computer and a tape drive. My roommate and I would cut class, close the blinds and fly- him as pilot, me as copilot. There was one time when we were smuggling a cargo hold full of narcotics into a high security system- the profits would be huge! Making the seemingly immense trek from star to station, creeping slowly as the security ships swarmed, but would not attack until someone fired. In the background, Phil Collins' 'In the Air Tonight' was playing on the radio. Stress levels rising as we watched a lone pirate headed our way. All hell broke loose as the pirate fired, and then EVERYBODY let loose. This happened just as the drum solo started on the song- could not have been purposely timed any better. To this day, thirty plus years later, that song takes me back to that tiny dorm room in Jersey as we flew like madmen. Yes, we did ultimately make it to port- but what a ride to get there!

So much to see in Elite Dangerous, and enjoying the ride again.

In 2016 I got a VR headset and quickly found out that most of the VR games were not very good, not much more than Tech demos.
I searched for a decent VR game and that’s when I found Elite Dangerous, Hallelujah.
Now sitting in my new Sidewinder in VR the Elite Dangerous world is amazing, everywhere I looked I was not just playing a game but was in the game.
After game set up stuff, I was ready for my first mission, Data delivery. Set course and off I went, POW I dropped onto my first star it was mind blowing,
in my face a huge glowing star what an unexpected experience. I don’t remember one or two stars later I got a message not enough fuel for jump,
I was stuck. My first day, my first trip I was out of fuel, what to do? I went to the internet and typed in ” Elite Dangerous out of Fuel “ surely I will find a walkthrough to help me get going.
What I found was the fuel Rats ? Went to the web site filled out the info thinking that this was a waste of time probably a gimmick.
In less than 10 minutes 2 huge ships dropped in on me and fueled me up they were very informative, told me about Fuel Rats, Wing Beacons, and the all-important Fuel Scoop.
Full of fuel I headed onto my destination, upon arrival I paused the game to tell the rest of the family how two guys from the internet came and rescued me in this video game, unbelievable!

I was afraid of getting lost so I decided to head back to my Home Base, remembering to get a Fuel Scoop for the return trip I then headed out.
Only a few hundred ls from my Home Starport I got hit by some kind of tractor beam, not knowing what is going on I instinctually flew my ship centered to the graphic circle on my HUD but to no avail down I went.
Then my ship started telling me I was under attack, How can this be happening I thought, WHY I was thinking. In an instant my shields were gone and hull going fast, then all of a sudden the shooting stopped,
I just sat there not knowing what to do. A message came across my Comms screen “ I saw you were in trouble and dropped in to help out “
This stranger saw I was under attack and stopped to help me, I was blown away by this game again. He explained interdictions and the dangers of the starter system,
I thanked him and got one last message just before he left “07” .

What a fist Day, almost two years later and 2000 hours in game that was the best gaming experience ever.

Excellent memories all !
For me it was Elite, all those years ago on the BBC / then C64 and then Amiga versions, and always in my head picturing it as it is now in this epic game. The images in my head have basically been brought to life and turned up to 11, and now as a "sensible" 50 something, I enjoy only one PC game, and thats ED in VR when i can stomach it, and it is simply reliving all the fantasies that I imagined then, as well as continuing now to build a roleplaying fantasy escape from the pressures of work and life.
I continue to enjoy those happy memories of the early wireframe games, through the current incarnation of cinematic and audio genius, with just the slightest regret that I was born too long ago to see this as a future reality.

i had my fisrt glipse of elite with the Amiga, I played elite II Frontiers and was the game that gave the most joy of all my amiga games, it was absorbing, difficult, completeley frightening.... everytime you launched that ship you felt the dread of the unknown.... i never found that in other games, and always came back to that amiga game... untill i heard from a friend that elite was remade and was on sale on steam.... for me seeing that it was on sales was mindblowing... i stood seeing the videos over an over waiting for the download to finish... with my heart racion and anticipating... that first time in the sidewinder screen was for me the comeback of old times, like if all those emotions finally condensed and were relived all at once again, i literally trembled while i was doing the initial flight checkup, and of course... i crashed that sidewinder in the mailbox the first time i took her out... it all came back to me, and have not left to this day.

My fondest memory of Elite Dangerous had to be when my friend just got his Federal Gunship and got it all kitted out and brought it out bounty hunting with me. I had been playing for almost a year at that point and my primary ship was the Python combat kitted, engineered, and even blew a ton of credits on the reactive surface composite. He needed to step away for a minute and I was just coming back from the station to for a refit. I locked on to his wing beacon and just as I dropped in 4 ships were just starting to circle him. I knew what was coming and figured he must have left some cargo in his inventory and forgot to dump it before he stepped away. I had never taken on so many ships at once with my python but I wasn't going to let my buddy die.

As they started in on him I began hitting as many of them as I could to pull them off of him. I quickly hit three in one run and convinced those guys to stay with me. I was very happy I had put so much work into my python. It handled the first two really quick. I see my buddy getting hammered and dive into the line of fire. The third, an asp explorer was really motivated once I started in on him. He had missiles and the first two had dropped my shields down to the last ring. My shields come down and he starts in on me with the missiles. One of my beam lasers goes out in the first shot. I stay on him and just face tank him hoping my hull was worth it. It certainly was. After a good amount of time taking bullets and missiles to the face he finally pops. I finish of the last one just as my buddy gets back on the stick. He quickly boosts out of the ring and we both head off for the station to refit and repair.

Frontier: First Encounters (1995), a beautiful one man ship, taking off from that first planet and in the first hours of that game flew to the next city on that planet (in real time), marvelling at the mountainous terrain, amazing texture mapping and gouroud shading, before finally flying into space.

Even then I felt I had the heart of the Federation but was seduced by the ships of the Empire and their stylings, one of my ships bore a passing resemblance to Blakes Liberator, tho it required a hefty crew to fly it and steered like the titular Hotblack Desiato ship in HHGTTG.

My favourite manoeuvres in the too many hours spent in that game was perfecting landings on the many body types, and just playing with the orrery, watching the dance of the planets as I sped up time and whilst the flight mechanics were a nightmare to learn, once you mastered it the sense of accomplishment was intoxicating.

It sparked my imagination in a way that very few games did (maybe Daggerfall). So Fdev, happy birthday and thanks for (all the fish) the memories...
