Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Just built a new rig

My old one just did not cut it, as that one was specifically built for low energy consumption (and is 6 years old now). In stations about 4-5 fps, in space not much better XD

I went with a b85 mainboard from Asrock, a gtx 960, core i5 4590, 16 gig, 630W PSU.
No OC in any way, just stock versions.
I really was positively surprised that this performs superb in E:D

Constantly > 60fps, even in Stations.
everything on Ultra, 1920x1200 pixels.

Gtx 960 seems to be a good choice if you don't go for 4k or 5k gaming.
Anyone experience with a Rift with a 960?
Would be interesting to see if the card can keep up with that one.

i5-2500K processor
12 gb DDR3 RAM
Gigabyte NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti card (runs slightly higher speced than standard NVIDIA vanilla card). Most settings on max.

Rig is 3.5 years old.

ED runs sweet as a nut.

What do you guys think about this?

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition
GPU: AMD HD 6870
RAM: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1600
PWR Supply: 600watt non modular power supply

I really don't know a lot about how GPUs compare. I have been basing my info off of hwcompare.com
I would plan to put another 2 to 4 GB of ram in.

Black on black? ;)

Well, they say that black is beautiful, so who am I to argue...

On a more serious note: you could get R9 270x for the same price as the 6870.
Hwcompare info: http://www.hwcompare.com/15725/radeon-hd-6870-vs-radeon-r9-270x/

Or is this an existing PC you're planning to get or you already own?

It'll run ED mostly fine on high-ish settings. I'm guessing this is a 2nd hand PC, just don't spend too much on it, like £200 ($300) tops.

Yes this is a computer I was thinking about buying used for $250-300. I have a MBP that just doest have the video card capability that I use for everything else. I was going to put some memory and a few drives I have lying around in the build above and call it a day.

I notice it has 2x2GB RAM, so if the mobo only has 2 slots you'll need to buy 2x4GB RAM to get to the 8GB. You don't actually need that though as 6GB will be more than enough - even 4GB will likely be enough. If this is the case I'd go with 1x4GB and use one of the 2GB sticks, rather than spend more money on 8GB, which isn't really needed.

Interestingly, I wasof the opinion that you rarely need 8gb RAM let alone more, but had a surprise this week when I removed some ram leaving me with just 8gb and Star Citizen wouldn't load due to lack of ram!

I know this is a PC for elite dangerous so it probably won't matter, but the games are similar enough that it is likely someone might want to play both. Just something I found that could make a difference down the line :)

To reiterate, 6gb is fine for Elite: Dangerous :)

Star Citizen has something weird going on with its memory use. I've noted it using around 2.6 GB also and I wouldn't be surprised if it has a memory leak in there. Works fine for me on 8GB though, that's all I have. ;)

Ah right, apologies for confusing this thread :)

Don't get me wrong - Star Citizen *will* need a very powerful pc to run it on release - possibly even a minimum spec of 8GB. They are supposed to be doing a 64-bit version and that will certainly use more memory. For the foreseeable future 8GB will be fine though. ;)

can i run Dangerous?

i know nothing about computers and was wondering if you guys could help see if my laptop can run this game. and when i say "run" i mean being able to actually play the game without 2 fps. EVE online runs great but World of Tanks overheats the PC withing 10 minutes of game play.

processor: AMD A10-4600M APU with radeon(tm) HD graphics 2.30 GHz

RAM: 6GB

Sys type: 64 bit x64-bassed processor.

i would post a picture of where i got the info but clearly this website does not like new posters. if you need any other info i have no idea where to find it.

I seriously doubt it :(

SC currently has a huge memory problem. It allocated gigabytes of memory it never fills. As Windows doesn't suppot memory overcommit, you'll run out of virtual address space with less than 12GB RAM (+Swap), even though physically, you have gigabytes of RAM free.

It's just bad programming.

gamecon 780's and alesis m1active 320usb's for sound I use the speakers when I want to do front flips onto my bed while my ship flies

I play with a black wired xbox 360 controller with grey on white classic fps kontrol freeks, I'm hoping I can buy a xbox one controller and use or the other for the buttons I currently need my keyboard for so I can eliminate the keyboard and mouse altogether I'm a real gamer I can't help it I hate keyboard and mouse, it would be 2sweet if the ps4 controller got full support with its buttons showing up on the screen too I could use the touchpad and speaker and whatever else it's got on its wiimote and aww man it's probably not gonna happen but that'd sure be great and very easy but of course due to the fact humans are horrible things it probably isn't going to happen because one suit from sony made a snarky comment about another suit from microsoft and now they wn't play billionaire golf together :(

Why would you waste money on a Titan today? GTX980 is a much better card, and the Titan X is around the corner. 6ms refesh monitor is not very gamer friendly either. It will cause motion blur and tearing in fast action sequences. The powersupply is total overkill unless you plan SLI. Also the CPU/Chipset are both outdated.

I know, everyone says this lol, but meanwhile I'm running every single game maxed and can even run a second one in my other monitor not that I can play both I just wanted to test it and yes, I, can, and no lol the 980 is not better you can't get better than running two games maxed at once and that also makes all my other hardware el awesomeo too :p

I didn't get a great monitor because I'm waiting for the new ones but this one hasn't given me any problems

sorry

I'm ordering this soon too I know it's also overkill like my power supply http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842102134 again sorry
