Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Hello Mick
the 4770 is a great CPU stick with that.. try avoid motherboards with onboard graphics! they are usually low end ones I would recommend asus motherboards a good mid range one with 4 memory slots will do so long as its sata 3 capable ...graphics card wise a nvidia 660 or 660ti are great cards!
hope this helps
Cheers

So, I tried typing into the Ebay search engine, the specs you gave me and got these.....

INTEL Core i7 3820 3.6GHz 1TB 8GB GTX660Ti 2GB Quad Gaming Desktop PC Computer

Or this.....

4th Gen Intel Haswell i7 4770K 1TB 8GB GTX660Ti 2GB Gaming Computer Quad Desktop

The second one here, even has a name similar to my own, but I'm a little confused by the inclusion of a DOD operating system. I thought they're obsolete now.

Not really too sure about the wisdom of ordering something as complex as a computer online before. When you order something, you are sort of stuck with what you have ordered, unlike purchasing something in a physical store.

I might have a look in Harvey Norman this afternoon.

Hello Mick the second one with the 4770 looks great but you will have to ask them to install an operating system on it windows 7 home premium 64 bit will do!

I always order my hardware though internet!

Oh the one on ebay will destroy that harvey norman model!!!!!
its rubbish the graphics card will not play ED!!

Make sure rig has SSD factored in. Having one of these badboys installed makes a world of difference in my opinion.

Agreed captain hook SSDs are the way to go but im just tryting to get mick sorted with a good system and not a load of uselees expensive crap:D

It's to cater for people who want to use Linux (which is free), so avoids the MS tax (being forced to buy an OS that's not going to be used)

Oi!
Christmas has come early this year:

Ready to unwrap & assemble :D

I just wish the online shop I ordered most of this stuff from hadn't botched one crucial part of the delivery: I got Microsoft Office Home & Business 2013 instead of Windows Ultimate 64-bit.
I mean, what I'm gonna do with the PC without an OS?
Well, so far the customer service has been good, so I believe the swap will happen swiftly.

A choice set of components, you've got there, Zieman - enjoy!
Thanks, I definitely will! :D

I've had really good time with the whole process so far: comparing different parts/combinations, looking at dream setups and stuggling to get the best out of my relatively generous but still in ways severely limited budget & knowledge.

Hey, looks like my inner GEEK has surfaced properly (again)

Your computer chair is in need of replacement :p

I've bolded the relevant part.
You probably can't avoid them now. The Haswell CPUs (ie, Core CPUs with model number starting with a 4, so the I7 4770, for example) have the video chip on the CPU itself, so you'r getting the video chip anyway and it costs the motherboard stuff all to include the physical bits to plug a monitor in (and may in fact be required by intel to include it anyway).

Doesn't mean you should USE the onborad video for games. It's still crap, for games.

Well, as zieman opened the image "can of worms", here goes my recently assembled system "naked pic"

(not very good photo. And still need to put some black cable extensions on the power cord)

What can I say - beautiful!

P.S
Is that lava lamp part of your computer?
