See my spec. It's similar to yours. The game runs at max details at a full 60fps (vsync'd) for me, except for in Factions - http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=25416
I'm hoping Factions is an unusual/rare example of a slow down in ED. ie: When the game comes out rarely will it encounter such a performance "hit". Fingers crossed!
I've not upgraded my machine simply because the new Intel platform is coming out next year (Skylake) along with DDR4 memory. I figured it might be wiser to jump onto the new technology, rather than the coat tales of the current one.
Might need to get a joystick. Anyone recommend one? If you use a joystick does that negate the need to use the keyboard too?

Very happy to report that the gtx760 oc gigabyte edition works flawlessly at 1080p at 60hz on my old rig, that should save me some cash
Obviously I've not got to Factions because I'm so bad at it I can't even work out how to turn around quickly, so can't even kill the Sindwinder guy in the third scenario.

If you need a cheap and good solution I would suggest Thrustmaster T.16000M.
You'd need an insane amount of buttons (or just not use all options) to completely negate the need for keyboard.
I use Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, it isn't too flashy, but does its job for the price. And I like having some command on the keyboard - somehow I find letters/key names easier to remember than the stick buttons (for those not so often used bindings).
Rather than messing about trying to build something (been there, done that) I'm considering pushing the button on a base Alienware X51 (http://www.dell.com/uk/p/alienware-x51-r2/pd?oc=d00ar201&model_id=alienware-x51-r2).
Can anyone give me an idea of how well it will run ED at 1680x1050? I'm guessing pretty impressively?
They seem to have a good reputation for quality and Dell claim they are upgradeable giving it a level of future proofing?
On the face of it, not a good system for E: D at all.
Graphics card is great, no problems there.
CPU however - a dual core i3? Seriously? I'm fairly sure E: D requires quad core at least.
If you could upgrade that to an i5 or (preferably) a good i7 then sure.
I disagree with your assumption that GPU is great as theoretical Texture Fill Rate and Memory Bandwidth GTX745 are worse than that of GTX260.
There were reports that it is possible to play on a 2-core CPU, however I would strongly suggest buying an i5 at least as ED is optimized for multi-threading and all 8 threads of my i7 are being used by ED.
Ah, didn't notice that, cheers. To be honest, I just looked at the 4GB and the high model number and thought it would be OK. You're right of course.
I can play E: D with a low res on my laptop, which is a dual core i5 8GB with a GTX260M. Well, it will run at least. But it's not a good experience.
Just built another teeny i5 as a tertiary box.
120Gb SSD, 8Gb RAM, i5 4440 running just onboard graphics.
Machine is about the same size as a PS4 - runs Elite great at 720 and cost basically nothing.
Can you give a bit more detail about what runs great at 720 means? I'm just looking for a better experience than my i7 laptop with integrated graphics - on low at 1680x1050 combat is generally fine, but it slows down to <10FPS in stations and really struggles when passing planets with rings on supercruise.
720 means 1280x720 resolution.
Do you already have Alienware laptop or are you planning to buy it?
Thanks. Have a work laptop that gives an okay experience, was thinking about an x51 desktop to get a better experience.
Oh man, what were they thinking!
Good you got decent stuff there now & applied it correctly, might get a couple of degrees lower temps once the AS5 has properly settled.
So, I've applied some "drillium" to the side of my case around where the GPU fan draws air in, and also around the front end where the hot air is exhausted out.
40 holes later, and yes, my case now looks a bit like a cheesegrater, but it's helped improve airflow - GPU down to a more comfortable 72-75C.
