Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

Well there is the recommended minimum for alpha -

I can't see that - Don't have access...

Is the quote you gave what it states? Because that clearly shows a very low spec machine? ie: My machine from over 5yrs ago is far far more powerful!

I still suspect (hope) my 5yr old machine will be running ED at a perfectly nice frame rate!

So...

are you (both) suggesting better motherboard, better graphics card will help the most and being able to save money on the other components not by skimping, perhaps, but by being more economical?

My Build from last crimble: -
85 Intel Core i5-760@3.60GHz
55 Asus P7H55/USB3
140 ST
37.78 8GB Crucial Ballistix Extreme DDR1600
130 Enermax NAXN 650W PSU+ Enermax ETS-T40-TB Fan & Heat Sink
307.78 ST
25 Windows 8 Pro
332.78 Tot
224.5 Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-X @1050
557.28 ST
90 Liteon Bluray burner
647.28 ST
125.86 AOC i2367FH IPS LCD
773.14 ST
76.97 Fractal Design Define R4 Case
850.11 ST
67.49 2TB Seagate Barracuda HDD
56.99 128 GB Sandisk SSD
15.47 PS Eye Camera

Obviously I used my old keyboard, mouse, blue-tooth and WiFi USB key.

I put it altogether over the crimble holidays. Apart from the CPU and motherboard everything else was new...

Okay, I know this is slightly off-topic....but......who thinks up the names some of the more 'colourfully' titled PC components?

i.e. Corsair VENGEANCE, RIPJAWS, MOUNT DOOM, FATAL1TY PERFORMANCE etc etc etc???

FATAL1TY is easy, it is the alias of a professional gamer used to market gaming hardware.

The same people who think up the stupid names for shaving devices - "Mach 3 Turbo"

I didn't meet min spec with my current machine an HP i3 laptop, so I have had to order a new set up. I decided to replace my 5 yr old desktop with;

Intel® Core™i7 Quad Core Processor i7-4770 (3.4GHz) 8MB Cache
ASUS® Z87-A: ATX, USB2.0, USB3.0, SATA6GB/S, SLi, XFIRE
8GB KINGSTON DUAL-DDR3 1600MHz RAM
2GB NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 760 - 2 DVI, HDMI, DP - 3D Vision Ready
500GB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 16MB CACHE
2TB 3.5" SATA-III 6GB/s HDD 7200RPM 64MB CACHE
Corsair H80i Hydro Series High Performance CPU Cooler
WIRELESS 802.11N 300Mbps PCI-E CARD
Genuine Windows 8.1 64 Bit
ASUS VG278HR 27" 144Hz 3D-READY LED (1920 x 1080)

That should do the trick for alpha :D

Nice system Kinderman but you are running it with the handbrake on without an SSD. For the small price it would cost to upgrade both of those disks and the huge speed boost you would get from it I would seriously consider doing so, or at least have the OS and maybe a fast games disk in addition to your 2TB mass storage one.

Machine Specs

Anyone have an idea if the game will run on a Sony Vaio All in one PC, running i5@2.60Ghz, 8 Gig ram, Intel HD Graphics 4000, Windows 8.1?

Also I have 4 systems in house, will we be able to load and test the game on all our systems or will we be limited to just one download and install?

Not sure if this has been asked on here but what are people's opinions on operating systems? Which Windows OS is better for gaming rigs (the least resource intensive for example)? Or are they all the same in that respect?

I have a choice of Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. Was wondering what would be the better option for a pure gaming system.

Funny ive been getting great feedback on two rigs am looking at and which has the better hardware on here, but forgot to ask about the OS!

mind the two i was looking at both come with Windows 8.1 but i could actually save money and downgrade to Win 7(which i hear is still good and will be for sometime).....but for my choice think i will work my way through 8.1.

I have to upgrade my PSU and GPU. I'm worried about the spacial size of the GPU though.
When I have to consider the physical dimensions of the card this does mean internally, doesn't it? The distance from the output plate and motherboard connecter is an industry standard, isn't it? I want to get a GTX 770 and it's 10inches while my current 315 card is 6.5inches. The extra space is internal to my understanding but maybe I'm wrong.
Also, the PSU. I want a 850W unit (a threefold increase from my current unit) but am I sensible doing this? Is it possible to have too much power in a system?
Can anyone let me know, please? :)

Hard to say which is "better", but having used both Win 7 and 8, the gaming rig I'm building in the new year will have Win 7 64-bit on it. If my current Win 8 laptop ever needs an OS refresh, it'll be getting Win 7 too.

If you go Win8 or 8.1, you might want to download Classic Shell immediately for a Start menu replacment (it's free and works seamlessly).

Am I right assunming that SSHD would be an improvement on the SSD hard drive option?

I heard 8.1 was more compatible with DirectX11? Maybe that would be a better option over 7 if that's the case? As for classic shell, yes I'd definitely get that as I've seen windows 8 on my gf's laptop and it was infuriating to get to grips with (or was for her!).

I have a 750W corsair bronze psu and have system below; never had a problem. The GTX770 asks for a 600W psu according to the box it came in if that helps.

As for space, I got the lot into my pc tower; I use a cooler master mystique 631 which is it at least 5 years at this stage (think its been discontinued?). The biggest squeeze was getting the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO into the case as it was alot bigger than I was expecting!

I believe Microsoft have said that the next DX update will be an Xbox One and Win 8.1 exclusive. This is obviously not for technical reasons, but to force people into their particular walled garden.

However, they'll possibly change their mind later when the howls of outrage begin.

Thanks Capt. Hook!
Not to sure if a cooler would fit and I'll think I'll wait before playing around with overclocking. :)

I've seen some gaming systems for sale on ebay that don't come with a windows operating system, instead they offer the following as an alternative:

"Ubuntu (free) to run this mini-itx as a games machine with Steambox"

Is that viable? Is it possible to run a gaming rig without windows, instead using free Ubuntu (whatever that is) and Steambox?

Surely it can't be that easy to opt out of being railroaded by windows? :S
