Hardware & Technical Computer Build to run Elite Dangerous

I believe Microsoft have said that the next DX update will be an Xbox One and Win 8.1 exclusive. This is obviously not for technical reasons, but to force people into their particular walled garden.

However, they'll possibly change their mind later when the howls of outrage begin.

Tbf alot of games don't even use all the features of dx10 never mind dx11! Also from what I've seen the dx11.1 on w8 doesn't really add that much extra that dx11 on w7 etc already offers. I've not seen anything that says dx12 is to be released any time soon.

Exactly, it's just an API after all - and not the only one, there's OpenGL for starts.

I have to upgrade my PSU and GPU. I'm worried about the spacial size of the GPU though.
When I have to consider the physical dimensions of the card this does mean internally, doesn't it? The distance from the output plate and motherboard connecter is an industry standard, isn't it? I want to get a GTX 770 and it's 10inches while my current 315 card is 6.5inches. The extra space is internal to my understanding but maybe I'm wrong.
Also, the PSU. I want a 850W unit (a threefold increase from my current unit) but am I sensible doing this? Is it possible to have too much power in a system?
Can anyone let me know, please? :)

Depends on your computer case. The manual should state the max GPU size.

About the PSU, a 750w+ should be enough for anything but multiple GPU configurations and similar extreme system. There is no harm in having extra available capacity, except slightly lower efficiency at low usage levels.

I've seen some gaming systems for sale on ebay that don't come with a windows operating system, instead they offer the following as an alternative:

"Ubuntu (free) to run this mini-itx as a games machine with Steambox"

Is that viable? Is it possible to run a gaming rig without windows, instead using free Ubuntu (whatever that is) and Steambox?

Surely it can't be that easy to opt out of being railroaded by windows? :S

Currently, no. Windows is almost mandatory for PC gaming. Specially due to Direct X (that it is windows exclusive - before anyone says XBox, it is a different version of the same tech).

Maybe steam box, Mantle ,.. will change the status quo, but as of now it is as we are.

You may well be able to get a cheap student version of Windows if you have kids, are on a course etc.

Worth looking into.

Hard to say which is "better", but having used both Win 7 and 8, the gaming rig I'm building in the new year will have Win 7 64-bit on it. If my current Win 8 laptop ever needs an OS refresh, it'll be getting Win 7 too.

If you go Win8 or 8.1, you might want to download Classic Shell immediately for a Start menu replacment (it's free and works seamlessly).

+1 for Classic Shell couldn't do without it...

Ok, i have 2 goals 1 - Play Elite MAX settings
2 - Play BF4 MAX settings

I have just bought:

Intel 4770K
Corsair H100i
EVGA Classified GTX780
Aus Maximus formula motherboard
Corsair AX860i PSU
Sandisk extreme SSD
32gb Corsair vengence pro RAM
If that wont run elite they have excluded 99% of people who have a worse rig!!

What are you gonna run it on?

I'm hoping my Atari 520 will do the trick if not I'll crank up my old Atari 1040 or if it's struggling I'll go back to old faithful my BBC rig

Rig to Run Elite and FLUCAMP

Just heard this on the radio this morning and thought it could be handy for those of us who need to upgrade/update their rig but don't have the cash....

http://www.flucamp.com/

Free meals, wifi internet etc. etc. and compensation of up to £3750.00.

Plus you'll get that warm, fuzzy feeling from having helped advance medical science. ;) :D

Meanwhile......back in Australia,....in my local Computer Store....

I have been asking a Ebay Computer salesman about the differences between dual-quad core processors and 8 single core processors.

Which is better and why?

Their answer was.....

Hi 8 single core processors is easy for home customer

two Quad-Core Processors is for business and need top range M/B to support 2 CPUs, 2 processors is fast the 8 single core. but it's expensive and complicated for setting it up.

I don't think english is their first language.

Today, I went into a small time computer store that I had brought my last PC from back in 2005. Ace Computer World Ipswich. Well today, I came back and it looks like they have expanded. Their once small shop now has a larger show room. As I walked inside I was greeted with the site of triple monitor set-up. It was quite pricey though when I inspected the price-tag. I also noticed a large ominous looking tower sitting on the shelf/table next to it.

That's when I was approached by the salesman. Some young lad and I immediately told him I wanted a gaming computer and also asked him about the Dual-Quad Core Processors and eight single core processors debate. I think he said the latter was better, because all eight of them are real processors and the Dual-Quad set-up only had virtual quad core processer in addition to the real one. Well, something like that.

I decided then and there I think I like the former.

He told me the large tower sitting on the table/shelf has eight single core processers and with a monitor, keyboard and mouse it will cost me nearly $2000.00 AUD and providing I am currently working, (Which I am not!) they would let me have it on credit. Such a shame that I'm only on welfare.

Anyway, they gave me sheet of paper with all it's spec on it.....

3 X 24" LCD Widescreen Monitors (I just noticed that, did I read correctly that this is triple monitor set-up and it's included in this bundle? I thought the cost for them alone is about over $1500.00 AUD)
Thermaltake Chaser Gamer Case(It looks quite awesome to me!)
AMD FX 8320 8 Core Black Edition 3.5GH
16Gb DDR3 RAM
120Gb SSD
2 TB HDD
2Gb ATI 7850 Graphic (I'm not sure if this is intergrated or what but how does this compare to NIVIDIA)
Blu-ray combo, Gigabit Network
Wireless Mulitimedia Keyboard (I'm wondering if I could bargain for one of those with led-light up/glow in the dark keys?)
Wireless Laser Mouse ( Both this and the Keyboard have a line running through them????)
5 piece 5.1 Speaker Set
Windows 7 PRO 64 BIT

Not sure if this has the hardware for accessing web in built or this has to added on or is that standard feature on all computers? I will ask when I visit again tomorrow.

So, are those specifications Elite - Dangerous worthy?

If they are.......They I might be having this in two months when I'll have the money to buy this. Just in time for the game Beta testing.

I would say those specs are Elite worthy although for $2,000 (£1,120) I would have expected a better video card than that ATI 7850. You can check its benchmarks here - http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php

Its ranked 31st and costs around ~£100 so I'd say its a cheap(ish) card in an expensive rig. Maybe someone with more experience can advise you better but I still think it'll be fine for Elite.

Can you elaborate on this Intel quad core 15/17?

Hello Mick

Not sure how many AUD to Pound but that system is fine I have the processor above that the 8350 its superb, and the GPU will be fine too to run ED you could always upgrade to GPU later on if you need to but the 7850 is a very capable mid range card!

bah! looks like my dvd optical drive has just packed in as was trying to burn a cd - doh! Would'nt mind but the fe**** is less than 6 months old.

that funny (funny odd , not funny haha) , i have a several optical drives still working a x1(not labled. got for wing commander) an x4 , two x8's which have out lasted every optical device since x16 came in (thats from a time before dvd roms) and thats not a small pile of dead drives. got to wonder if its built in defects.

yeah I know what you mean. I've never had a problem with one before either. Mrs. Hook asked me to burn some CDs of family photos when it had a nervous breakdown and stopped working - I'm saying nothing ;)

"HD 7850" & "GTX 660/660ti" & "GTX 670/760" and "Intel quad core I5/I7"

The Salesman did tell me everything on this computer could be upgraded, but that would cost me more and take me more time to save more money for a even more impressive system. However, I will ask him about "HD 7850" & "GTX 660/660ti" & "GTX 670/760" and "Intel quad core I5/I7".....

What were Elite - Dangerous's most important minimium all round specifications?

Funny thing, my Acer Laptop shut it self down and has since not been able to restart properly. It now takes ages to get beyond the loading screen for windows and when it get to it's home start up screen. It won't respond to anything. Anytime I click on anything. It just takes ages to respond with a error message. I think it was through the use of some malicous software I downloaded. Dad says it's something to do with a bad file that got into the operating system and we'll need a professional technician to retrieve all the essential, irraplaceable information I have been keeping on that laptop.

Damn, that computer had all my most recent passwords :(

Now I'm alternating between my other computer which has a busted keyboard and the new computers my father uses.
