So the big question is this and remember tech speak is something i have no real grasp of lol

The reason i have a Laptop is mainly for the boring stuff ie online banking/web surfing and being away from home for work 3-4 nights a week( lorry driver :rolleyes:) i can watch DVD and Sky Go, so a desktop is out of the question.

So to play ED i need to balance ££ and what i can get past SWMBO.

So can you give me a spec to aim for and an explanation of the abbreviations and what the figures mean.

As a married man of 20+yrs i could do with some help

I know very little about gaming laptops, but I'm sure others do. There are a few online companies that build half-decent laptops to spec (kinda) - one such is PC Specialist (there are others). Have a browse through their 'configure a laptop' section - but again, fix your budget first, and wait for a laptop boffin to post here. I only know about desktops, you see.

The big problem with laptops is you cannot upgrade them too much. You can change the hard drive (with difficulty), you can sometimes add memory, but that's pretty much it. What you buy is what you're stuck with... and compromises are always made to get everything to fit & in the name of portability.

I would echo what Asp and others are saying. If you want to play Elite, or any game really, get a desktop. Doesn't have to be a big tower monstrosity of a thing, you can get some really capable PCs which will fit almost in the palm of your hand. Look at Mini ITX cases and motherboards, if you want to google them.

You'll also find it's a lot cheaper too - which might make it easier to justify to the other half.

But yeah. Have a budget, add a bit on top, then people here can steer you right so you'll get the best E: D experience possible. :)

Last year I got a custom built laptop from PC Specialist in the UK. If you have a price tag in mind and want something built for gaming then you can get something tailored exactly to your needs. Their service isn't completely awful either! ;)

I do not agree that this is a new standard. As for the PC upgrade, I would wait until the CV1 is released. The next gen GPUs should be available by then. And as far as I remember the CV1 might have a 95+ FPS requirement. Given the rumoured resolution of 2560x1440 a very powerful GPU should be required.

To think I've been trying the pre-predecessor (i-glasses) eighteen years ago, playing Nemac IV on an Amiga 4000... as usual, Amiga was there about a decade too soon for it to catch on, and now people think it's "new". Even Apple ripped off the name. :cool:

I have a similar GPU: HD5750 with 1 gb ram. It's not great, but it gives 40fps almost everywhere at max settings (1680x1050). FPS drops in stations, but that seems to be a coding issue in the latest build.

I think a quadcore CPU is recommended, so you're a bit below spec there. I have the Phenom II X4@3.4GHz, but it's not maxed out when playing the game, so you'll probably be ok.

Off the wall suggestion, but with an invertor in the lorry for power, could a desktop work better than a laptop or cheaper?

With a Kw+ power inverter - you could theoretically do it for a full desktop.

I would advise against it though - most inverter's put out absolutely horrible fluctuations that can give a PSU a very bad time indeed.

Well... after much consideration, i've decided to replace my five year old HP Envy 15 with it's puny i7 Quad Core Q720 1.6GHz CPU, coupled with an ageing ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830, it just won't cut it anymore.

I've just finished configuring my new laptop for ED,

17.3" Vortex IV Elite SE (Matte, LED, Widescreen, full HD)
CPU - i7 Quad Core (i7-4940MX 3.10GHz, 8MB Cache
RAM - 16GB Kingston hyper-X Impact 1600MHz DDR3 (2x 8GB)
GPUs - 2x GeForce 880M in SLI mode, (2x 8GB of DDR5 video Ram)
Drives - 2x 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD
330 Watt Power Supply.

By the way, those 2x GeForce 880Ms outperform a GTX TITAN :)

Can't wait!

Hope for your sake that this thing has the cooling capability for this, else I can see those 880 cook...

Oh, by the way, don't use it as a laptop, if you want to keep those jewels! :D

:) He'd be lucky for it to switch on at all :)

Please peeps - your PSU is the most critical part of your computer. Don't get a rubbish one!

Absolutely everything else depends upon it, so don't chance cooking a $1000 CPU or $2000 SLI cards on a $45 power supply.

I'm sure the company who builds this particular unit have tested it :) - But, I've emailed the techy guys just to make sure the power supply is adequate (as it's the only power option available for all the SLI'd GPU cards) - Maybe Laptop GPUs use less power?

Anyway... i'm getting used to setting my left arm on fire with this HP Envy.

Thanks for raising the concern. If I was configuring a desktop PC, I'd probably be going for something around the 440W mark.

Hey all,

Maybe you can help me out?

I am trying to find a rig that will run ED smoothly at 1440p with max settings.

I'm considering the Asus GTX 780Ti OC 3GB.

Do any of you have any experience with this GFX card or equivalent at 1440p?

I would very much like to hear what you found.

Would another card be better, or maybe SLI?
