Computer feminization

Oh, and the OP is lying by stating that all voices in the game are female. Selection bias at work here I suspect.
....

*snipped for relevance to my reply*

Indeed - there is at least one station controller that sounds to me like a cross between a certain male (mostly) Scottish commander on here and a certain male Dutch Commander..

:D

I always get annoyed when computer voices are female in video games, that kind of pandering to the lowest common denominator is so obnoxious.

Will there be an option to have a male voice for computer voicing?

I don't see it exactly pandering, *historically* computer voices have been female. Remember in Privateer 2 The Darkening had Dani Behr cast as the voice because of her voice ?

It'd be cool if there was an optional male voice like Makaan from Homeworld 2 or CABAL from C&C too.

It doesn't take much work to record alternative voices, but there are development implications. First of all the amount of work in the code involved and it doubles the ship voice assets and increases the size of the deployment (what you download).

Oh man, CABAL... "Define Favorable outcome" "They will all die"

Ah, hell with it, why not have a selection of voices (optional male and female) for ships made by the different manufacturers. Sound doesn't take up that much space if it's compressed well enough !

That'd make everyone happy, right ?

Lets compromise.

Elite is all about freedom and choice. I don't see why 'voice choice' cannot be part of the final game.
Possible project for the ED Fan Creations, expansion pack etc? I'm sure the audio files would be easy to do and add in.

I was going to suggest this, but searched the thread so now I only need to second it :)

Plus, quite a few of us seem to be using synthesised speech through Voice Attack, GlovePIE or similar systems, wouldn't it be cool if the game could access speech synthesis directly? (i.e. there'd be a config option saying, don't play ED's native voice files, send the text to the Windows speech engine instead).

That would eliminate the need to record anything, and give a very wide choice of high-quality voices ... male, female, languages, accents ... albeit paid-for, by and large.

I think the problem with that is that contemporary speech synthesis is pretty limited sounding, except for the very high-end expensive products (AT&T, Natural Voices, etc) and since Elite is set in the far future, it would be cooler to have an appropriate naturalized speech appropriate to that future.

all being said, I'm *sure* FD will consider putting in a Sat-Navesque toggle for male/female voices. At the very least that should keep the (oh so very small) minority happy.
