Computer feminization

Ohh man, geez yeah holly...though your right she was a he to start with....and again later for a while lol ;)

yep, I definitely liked Holly more than Hilly, but sorry filip is just plain wrong, I cant really even think of it being different opinion factually he is way off base!.

There ARE male voices in the ships station, and whilst its true the ships computer is currently female, they had to have it 1 way or the other, unless he is suggesting having random samples for different things, which would be utter madness imo.

The only other option would be a sexless robot voice but that would just lack soul, and I dont want that in my car satnav**, let alone 1000 years in the future.

It just seems to me to be stirring up anger at sexism for the sake of it to be honest.

**which I have John Cleese on before I am accused of being sexist myself

PS someone posted exactly this same thread months ago. Please tell me it wasn't the same person??

PS as already said, ED has a very nautical theme and ships, like it or not, ARE generally called in the feminine in the maritime community. I think it is historic, I cant remember exact reasons but I think (going back to GCSE theology) it is something to do with trying to appease "mother nature" whilst on the sea, given that "she" would be less likely to sink a female.

My skin crawled when I read this, such an obnoxious crowd here.
In most other countries they are referred to as "it", are you saying ED is not set for an international audience?

Since when is hyper-sexualization of inanimate objects and hetero-normative framing a thing?
Most societies throughout human history were slave-based.
Do you understand what an argument is?

+ Several million for effort!

Anyway: Matt Berry ship voice?

<MB>Cargo Scoop out sweet cheeks. I'm having some of that!</MB>

Yes please!

It was.

I wonder if he'd see it as an issue if it were all male voices?

I'm a bit hard of hearing so I appreciate the female voice - higher pitched voices are much easier for me to distinguish. I expect there to be a range of options in future though.

I wonder if that works for female listeners too

Anyway, as a male, I feel discriminated against! Help, help, I'm being oppressed! Come see the violence inherent in the system!

(An early version of my car's nav system had a slight French accent, now that was sexy.)

Yes, it does. Most magazines have scantily clad women on the cover because they appeal to men and women equally, and more than scantily clad men. Same thing with voices, a female voice sounds more appealing to the majority of the population.

That said, I'd love to see alternatives. As long as I can have either Eve Myles or Jennifer Hale in my cockpit. OK, that came out wrong... Plus, we obviously need a "Kif" voice, for the Futurama fans.

Just for clarity, female voices aren't higher pitched as such.

The have the same range of frequencies, it's just most power is in a narrower spectral band which is one of the reasons a female voice is clearer and more discernible in a noise cluttered environment.

Personally, I'd like notifications barked out in harsh Klingon.

They are not ALL female...there's a warning or advertisement voice inside the space station that is male, with what sounds like a Dutch accent. That's the only one that springs to mind though.

Lol, I had excactly the same idea (being dutch myself). But I guess the voices are just temporary, they will hire someone/s to do the final voices.

I believe the real reason we went for a woman was that we couldn't afford Matt Berry, and after imagining him in that role no other man would do.

We need to start a KS now for Matt Berry to do the voice overs. I'd be in hysterics everytime he made an announcment.

Ok, as Steve mentioned please keep it constructive without any personal comments.
