Console Update

Looking forward to a new bright future of Elite.

At the very least I hope that this change will result in eventual dissolution of obnoxious player minor factions that have been a soreness in the eye for far too long.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
This is unfortunate. Now the real question is this. What are the plans for the split instances of PC between horizons and odyssey? When will you combine the two so people can play together? You guys have proven you can do this like you did with the original elite and horizons. All you did was restrict the ED Base game players from accessing ED horizons content and you can do the same here. All we want to do is to play together. Will you guys force the horizon players to have to deal with the updated graphics of Odyssey? The reason I ask this is because I've come across MANY players who can play horizons just fine but cant even come close to 30 fps on Odyssey and if you make them have to deal with the updated graphics when you merge the two instances, you'll alienate a lot of your player base. You can do what Black Desert Online has done and have 2 seperate graphical options in the game that will either turn on the new graphical engine or turn on the old graphical engine. You can do something similar to the picture below so people arent alienated.

What will you do with the planteary engine? Its no news that no one likes the new planetary generation engine. It flattened out every interesting planet and made everything the same. It makes exploration BORING and im not even an explorer im a thargoid fighter!

Hi

So with this bad move regarding console players im gonna leave elite for good, is a ver but very bad move shows no consideration for console users that are playing the game since release (ps4), i was playing now the xbox version but now with this im gonna stop playing elite. With no ps5/Xbox series release (i dont know why since they are more powerfull machines) there is no way im gonna play this again. I dont have money to buy a pc to play elite.
same here, RL doesn't allow me to do so.

Maybe you don't understand that we console players mainly were very patient for nearly a year, hoped that Frontier after some time to get EDO running, will work again on topics like broken BGS, balancing and grinding issues, new ships and other new content for EDH, not even talking about getting EDO on the console.

Allready today EDO e.g. is mutch more efficient for BGS as EDH. Frontier now says they will freeze EDH and wthey will not provide any upgrades (beside some essential fixes). I would not be surprised if they decouple the console with EDH completly from EDO BGS soon.

The player base for sure will signifficantly drop and then we can expect a complete shutdown of the EDH server maybe next year. As they did not thought about a transfer of accounts I expect there will come nothing. A free EDO license is not the point if I have to buy a gaming PC at first. The point is the endless effort to get tripple elite, to get all the ships and modules, the engeneers, etc. and the items that are limited only to successful CGs.
No, I understand all of that thanks. My point was if you enjoy playing it today, no reason not to play it today. If you stop enjoying it, stop playing it. Just seems a bit odd to say 'I like the game and enjoy playing it but I'm going to stop because in a bit I won't enjoy playing it'. It's like not eating a pie because you're worried that you won't like the pie next year.

But as I said, it's a choice for the individual to make. I'm not looking to have an argument with anybody here, just making an observation.

I demand a full refund, as should every other person that bought into your .

We are investigating potential options but we don't have anything to announce at present.
Long time player, first time poster. Hope everyone is well.
Having laid low whilst awaiting PS4 arrival of Odyssey ... And a one time transfer from PC -> PS4 a few years ago.
Appreciate this was not out of choice for Frontier but.. Is it possible that you could consider a now SECOND transfer back now please? I've got another PC which hasn't fried and can take Odyssey but was hesitant at best to do my ranks, permits and more importantly engineers all over again. If you could also incorporate transferring those over too I and am sure many other CMDR's would be like pigs in the proverbial like myself as a result.

Also, random Q as I've not looked already - is there any potential for a Steam Deck optimised experience?

Much obliged!

Dear Frontier,

As a console player, and a former loyal fan, I must express the grave disappointment I feel for you guys at the moment. Especially you, Mr Braben. I've silently watched as you and your team have slowly taken away our enjoyment of this game time and time again. I've poured hours upon hours into this game with the hopes that someday I might even be able to enjoy flying with friends I've made on PC someday. But here we are. You pushed your greatest story teller away with your crap, and now we have no more fun and interesting stories to read about. I even joined Salome as one of the four, and your robbed us of the epic conclusion to that story by pushing away, yes, you guessed it, our greatest story teller. And now, here we are, us plebians that have always gotten the short end of the straw, being robbed of content we've semi-patiently awaited.

Mr Braben, I hereby am requesting that every console player in this forum unite and express their heartfelt feelings toward you and your team as I am quite sure that much like myself, we are all ED!

Sincerely,

CMDR Yuri Nakamura

...and with this announcement it is more emphasized in Braben's phrase, "Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart", that the Elite will hardly die, as many who call themselves streamers are generating fake news to gain views.

Anyone in the IT/programming area knows how difficult what Frontier has done is, keeping the same product (with this wealth of data) on different platforms, congratulations for the time and work performed so far in the best way so far and that from then on, the Elite can really get where its creator (DB) envisioned it, as well as make a plan to move users from consoles to the PC platform so as not to penalize them for the deficiencies that they were unable to resolve on the consoles. I always said, Elite is a computer game, console was a miracle they managed to port.

I feel sorry for console users, i honestly do. I understand though that the practicalities of this were just not there so in a way i guess they had no choice and had to pull the band aid off now. Part of me is happy they are keeping this as a PC game and not polluting it with casual gamer nonsense that plagues console games (simplified mechanics, pew pew now buy stuff rotations, visual representations over quality & content etc). With that said, Elite are going to lose more of their player base and i feel its vital to 1) Enable transfers from console to PC. 2) Continue to improve the PC experience beyond expectations and breath new live into it.

I’ll be honest, @Paul_Crowther, I’m not sure I believe this will ever happen. Maybe it’s just the timing of you saying it, but “exploring options” is pretty non-committal right after the abandonment of a feature with more firm promises from the development side. If FDev wants to make things right, commit to it. Maybe you can’t, but @David Braben can.

If FDev truly are committed to full account transfers (permits, explore data, ships, cosmetics, credits), why did you make this announcement now before you had plans in place related to transfers? Will we have to re-buy the game to continue with our accounts?

Thanks,
CMDR Grengarr (Xbox Game Preview Program Player)
The Playstation community had four year of exploring options on the Cobra MkIV before they finally got backed into a corner and admitted that they weren't going to do it.
Console was always an afterthought - a way of making an apparent quick buck.

The game is now too long in the tooth to have any serious dev time spent on it.
All the better developers are working Jurassic Park, WarHammer or F1 mgt sim.

The legacy Frontier projects such as ED, Planet Coaster and Planet Zoo just token lip service.
I am furious that the writing on the wall for console players was called out last year and we were told to bide our time and carry on playing (aka spending money)
And now, with the bad news that console development is officially ceasing, Frontier do not have the decency to offer console players a way to move their many years of player investment across to the one platform that is continuing.

"A single codebase" is just an excuse, sorry, I don't believe that. I have a pc, so this decision doesn't affect me, but it feels like I'm watching my neighbour's house being burned while I'm standing in apathy.
Sorry, Mr Braben, but I feel betrayed. Serious mistakes were made during Odyssey's development, the fact that you won't fix it for consoles speaks volumes about it. I'd be happy for the other IPs that FDev is developing, but the manpower working on those could have been fixing Odyssey, even from the ground up.

Shame. From my point of view, ED is not your dream anymore.

Nothing I didn't see coming. PS4 was my main acct from launch, but once Odyssey hit I mostly moved across to PC so I'll cope; but can't deny it's a dark day.
But at least that particular plaster has been summarily ripped off. Comms back to their pre-Christmas normal now, please?

you folks didn't have a statement regarding transfers for an announcement about stopping console development
They clearly did though. That "we are exploring options but nothing to announce" language was first posted three minutes after DB's original post, and repeated nearly verbatim by multiple staff members. It's quite obvious they've discussed the account transfer question internally before today, don't know the answer yet, knew people would ask this question, and agreed on this statement as the response.
