Console Update

I got news for you. The whole "console holds back pc" thing is rubbish. The PC is both the highest and lowest benchmark for games. They still have to make sure people on old PCs that could run the original game can play the updates. Are they going to start telling people they have to upgrade their pc after an update makes theirs no longer good enough. I would be ed if a game I was playing got an update and suddenly I can't play it because my computer that was good enough yesterday is not good enough today.
That is thru, you will need to meet games specification but no consoles means that the game wont have to meet consoles specifications.

It's most unfortunate when people make promises and eventually dont deliver.
I did not expect console project to go on forever and I can accept that is sacked. What I can't accept is the attitude and behaviour of this company giving fake deadlines with zero infos to the community on why they have not kept their promises in the first place (as proven by this post by Mr Braben).

What did you other console commanders expect?

I am a console player and I honestly after talking with some original backers of the game who left many years ago I knew this company had a history of just not delivering.
I was not looking forward to oddissey on console ( I actually wished for more ships and space related stuff). I'm happy for the pc community as I hope they will finally receive a functioning oddissey product now.
And for whoever is disappointed just don't take for granted all what fdev says.
Or any corporation for that matter. For example braben once said that we will be able to board and steal enemy vessels or that we would have procedurally generated cities and that we would hunt dinosaurs on undiscovered planets (Link here).
It would have been kind having more details but obviously they can't be straight and honest about it proving the same behaviour till the end.
I can only speculate but looking at the investort page I assume that the bottom line for them is that money comes always first before the customers.
Did fdev ask themselves how many investors in the company are actually console players ? I don't think so.

Personally I won't be giving my money to fdev anymore and stock is sold as of now. It was nice while it lasted.

It feels like those ex girlfriends that you couldn't leave but you're happy you did.

Well, this is my only post, and maybe my English isn't perfect. But I think it's cool to bring this vision, experience and report to the forum.

I'm from Brazil, we don't have a strong currency here, this makes it very difficult to acquire powerful computers or any electronics. Unfortunately, I work all day at the computer, so I have no interest in having fun at the place where I usually work. Soon I have X-Box which is my place of relaxation and rest.

It all starts in mid-2019 when I finally joined Elite Dangerous, and it was love at first sight! Soon I called some friends that I usually play together to test the game, and to my surprise the game had pierced the bubble and conquered everyone. We found out that one of the biggest squads in the game was from Brazilians to BLOP (Brazilian League of Pilots) So we joined Whats App and Telegram groups with people from PC and that helped us a lot, soon we created our own Whats App X-Box group and with the game coming to Game Pass today the groups have over 500 members posting photos, helping each other and debating about the game.

You can imagine anxiety for many who were building ships, saving Crs for the future expansion apart from those more enthusiastic who spent ARXs to assemble their dolls and ships.

Well today the group was generally people saying goodbye, even now there are people leaving the group, so my question on this issue is:

Is it worth focusing only on PC? Being that for PC Elite Dangerous competes with, No Man Sky, Star Citzen, X4 Foundation in the future with Star Atlas? Being that on the Console your only competition would be with No Man Sky, which somehow reaches a very different audience?!

For the community in general, with the disappearance of the console, (yes it will end with time, the whats app group) is it worth content, interest and community about the game to decrease so much?

And to finish and last question with all due respect to the FDev, I feel that the challenge was huge but I can't face it as a complete incompetence of production, marketing and communication, so... You really think this is a worthy attitude, in the face of of so much incompetence addressed?

I sincerely hope that this announcement is to calm the mood and expectations and that in their inner core they are still thinking and developing EDO for the Console, since financially and strategically I don't see any advantage in withdrawing support for consoles.

Thanks for your patience so far, it was fun while it lasted.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
As much as I admire David Braben for what he has achieved in the past with Elite, it is my opinion that he and his team have massively bungled the management of his passion project. This past May, it appeared to me that the team was honestly shocked by how poorly the launch of Odyssey was received. It has taken them months to realize that bringing Odyssey to consoles and maintaining more than a single code base would require more time and money than they were willing to invest. I do not blame this on the developers trying to write and clean up the code for this in-house game engine. I certainly do not blame the community managers who have tried to maintain the interface between the company and the wild rabble that we, the players, can sometimes be. I think the blame for this failure falls squarely on the company managers for their persistent miscarriage of the actual management of this project. I honestly believe this did not have to happen! This management team has failed the game, this community and themselves.

Consoles are just PCs with specific hardware. Companies already have to support hundreds of hardware variations on PC. If a game come out for PC and not console I have no problem with that. But a developer that puts a game on console should support it and not abandon it. I would have been fine if it never came to console. If they were not competent enough to support console they should not have ported it to begin with.

I sure hope for FDevs sake that they have spent the near year since Odyssey release coming up with a plan B for console players. It would be great if after the launch debacle they decided to try and get it to work on console but at the same time put a plan in place to work on a way to transfer players from the console to PC with everything intact, not just a transfer of the credit value of the players assets. It would be just the kind of gesture that might redeem the situation.

Something I have wondered, do console players buy cosmetics like PC players, cause what happens to those when transferred to PC?
Yes I have spent several hundred on Arx bucks for ship kits, paints, weapon and engine color, decals n bobble heads.

The lack of a plan to port console player saves to PC should GRAVELY concern everyone. This is player retention 101. Cheaper to keep a customer than get a new one, etc. The lack of a plan does not bode well for the future on PC.

Elite is NOT the most popular game and yet they still are not doing anything to retain players, which would also alleviate some of the frustration caused by this PR blunder. But they aren’t doing any of it. They don’t seem concerned about retention, or helping the most likely players to buy the game.

I think the game is winding down and odyssey is it. One last grab. Possible leaning for a sale as someone else mentioned. All speculation. But seems like odd behavior if the game is meant to continue in earnest beyond 1-2 years.

Never came as a surprise to me. I think most console players saw the writing on the wall, but we hoped the hours we played and the money we spent would be for something, and not just an abrupt end. I moved on from ED about the time where Odyssey released and gave games like NMS another go. NMS might not be the same game, but I have to hand it to that small team in their efforts to bring all platforms together, with constant updates that give so much content, and not for a single dime needed more than the base game.

ED's development has been troubled for some time, and PC players think that more focus on one codebase is going to somehow spring the game to greatness, but it really has been work on a single codebase already since Odyssey released, and it still feels like the same 'ol dog and pony show. Honestly, my only regret is putting in the time I did and the support I wanted to give by purchasing ARX.

Goodluck Fdev. You're going to need it. Like you've always needed it.

Dear Fdev,
My PC busted back in 2020. Because of Odyssey, I bought the game on ps4 in August of 2021, bought a PS4 to play it on, a HOTAS, and bought every ship kit (almost) in the game, as well as paint jobs and other such stuff...

About $1000 dollars to play the game into odyssey on console.

Then you post this nonsense, essentially telling me that the $1000 is being thrown away?

Either you need to get back to work, with your FULL staff involved on the port, or you need to start reimbursing players.

I love Elite, I've been on for the long haul, pre-horizon on PC. This is a slap in the face, and if you don't fix it, I hope the community comes together and destroys your stocks, your money, your game.

I was one of the last voices remaining faithful to Fdev... You ended that.
