Console Update

That is what I keep saying, Odyssey is too much for consoles. Fdevs underestimated Odyssey, now they see there is no way they can make Odyssey to work on consoles because of consoles limitations. Worst thing is they keep people hoping, they should have cancel it when they first decided to postpone console development.
It is not too much for new consoles. it is too much for FDev to handle. they are in over their heads and about to drown. They just could not handle it and gave up. they quit because it was too hard to make it work properly.

Lucky for me that I am not the type of gamer to spend real money on ARX for livery etc. for either the PC or PS4; never have. I don't feel to good for all those console players that have actually put real money into this game for ARX/livery.

I actually don't feel like booting up the PS4 version tonight after receiving this news and I was about to take off for Colonia. I could play another online game that I know is cross-platform and has a huge player base instead.

I'm yet to decide whether to bother re-installing Steam, reinstalling ED for the PC (including Visual Basic AGAIN) and finding the game save files for Cmdr Pingmonster. (At some later date).

I've always been one to take FD's side of the argument when it came to people criticising how the company was run but, considering consoles are a significant portion of the digital entertainment market for any number of reasons, the words "strategic management" keep going through my head....

... and no thanks; I don't want to breed dinosaurs.
When I find a game I like I like to help support them by buying the premium currency every once in a while. sadly I made the mistake here. I am sitting on 99k ARX. My own fault and will be reassessing my policy from now on.

I have 15k of farmed ARX on the PS4 but if you think I'm laughing about it Cmdr, please think again..... o7.

Lol. Asobo, a studio of around 200 employees, ported MS Flight Sim 2020 to a $299 console with controller, keyboard, and mouse support and the Xbox Series S is weaker than the Xbox One X. We all know what the issue is here and it isn't consoles.

Sorry, but as someone who has developed software applications in the past, having more than one code base takes more resources. There is no way when they rolled Horizons in to the base game that they had a code set for PCs and a separate code set for consoles. Any code that consoles specifically needed would have been included in the PC code base, because 1 code base existed.

While they built Odyssey they still had to work on top of that 1 code base in order to prepare a console version of Odyssey. Therefore the Odyssey code has bloat in it from trying to make it for console.

I don't "blame" consoles for this, that's programming. What will happen now is they will be able to remove all the console code from the PC version of Horizons and Odyssey, then we should see significant improvements.

They will still fix issues that arise on console, but that code base will have no further effect on the PC code. I expect that update 12 or some update down the road for PCs will see significant increase in performance.

Horizon's never received the graphical improvements that Odyssey has. Those will now become part of the code for Horizons on PC as they won't have to make it work on console.

IF you wanted to place blame on any thing for this, put it on the closed system that is a console. Further, blame Sony/PlayStation for making it difficult for any game to get updates on its system.
Maybe there will be an Odyssey Classic in the future that will run on PS5…

:D S

Looks like I chose a weird time to get back into Elite last month on PS4 a few years after my first experience with it. (I tend to play things intensely for short periods, and maybe come back later).

Missed all the Odyssey kerfuffle, but it was cool seeing all the new bits that had been teased last time I was playing, like blowing up asteroids, and fleet carriers. (Although there are rather a lot of them, aren't there?)

Trying out the big ships for the first time. Just got my first top 10 in a CG, and my first non-cash CG rewards... And if I win an election today a minor faction I'm supporting will take control of the system. This BGS thing is quite entertaining.

Probably not going to move to PC - far too many games I need to play on my console still, without adding an extra platform - but could we at least get major broken functionality working on console for its remaining life, whatever that is?

In particular this Codex log thing looks like it would be good - could certainly have done with that when exploring last time I was playing - having to rely on offline data drives me nuts - but it seems to have come and gone in my time off...

Does a major game function not working at all count as a critical bug? I guess not, or it would have been fixed by now. I understand it's been off for months, not weeks?

Said the same thing last night to a fellow console player. I bought Elite as it was the closest thing to a flight simulator there was on console. Now we have MS Flight Simulator on console which has historically been a PC for graphics and performance reasons. They could get it to work if they really wanted but with 10 months of delays, the console player base has shrunk massively and moved on, making the whole project pointless.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Thanks for screwing us all. Leaving the game now. Because I’m sure you guys won’t help the console community to transfer our accounts to pc. Sad day for all of us. This is bad, really. It was good playing the game but I’ll let it go.

Yes it hasn't been working since September. CMs admitted the problem, there is a report but it doesn't seem to be a priority. I started a thread about it back in October or so.

But now it irrelevant anyway. Game is dead on consoles. Everything that is relevant like BGS, Story, CGs, so what makes ED a living universe is gone.

Can be still a nice offline, SP space trucker...

I bet the majority of people would have settled for a full account transfer from console to PC. They could have spent the year preparing that, but that wasn't even worthwhile to them.

Hi Mr. Braben,
I know what it means to make this kind of decision about a "product" close to the heart, I mean as "product owner and head of concept design" but also an entrepreneur, sometimes the heart has to be turned off ", we say. I hope your decision can be implemented in order to improve on the one hand "your idea of long life, that we love" and on the other hand help move console players (and squadrons!) to PC with less effort / cost on both sides ... but to the greater satisfaction of your special supporters, the customers ... the elite dangerous players ... everywhere in the galaxy ...
Good luck..

And I doubt a transfer will happen now either.
So what this means for all the PC players (as stated I have an older PC version/account and a PS4 version/account) is that any potential new player base for the game has shrunk significantly as consoles are a huge share of the gaming market.

So what happens when the PC version is no longer a financially viable run (which could possibly be tomorrow the way things are going)?

Servers can always be used for more profitable games that FD is running.

What happens? Shrink the galaxy? And when the last server dies.................... goodbye.

Just make it simple if you are a console player

Tell fdev with your wallet just don't buy any games from them and every person you know of tell them the same.

If it's the grave for console why not for everyone else.

System maps will soon only be decommissioned fleet carrier and the small amount of fc left is just the small elitist commanders out there.
