I will stop playing, there's no point in ploughing more hours into something that has no future. I've put in over 5,000 hrs so I've had my money's worth and enjoyed my time in the game. I hope one day they may bring it to next gen but I know deep down that won't happen. You're now at the bargaining stage of grief.
You're just going to have to move into acceptance sooner or later. Its done on consoles. Either keep playing what is there or stop.
Same will happen to PC one day as well. We don't know when that will be. We have people in this thread predicting FD will stop development on PC soon and others predicting this now means good things for ED's future.
But in reality, nobody knows.
Go back to 2014 and i think many expected the game wouldn't be supported for more than 10 years with updates, and it isn't far off 10 years now.
I thank you for breaking the news to the community. I am glad this has been stored out. I am still a long-time fan of the game when Frontier Elite II was ported to the Atari. Game development was more straightforward in those days. Still a fan! o7Greetings Commanders,
Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.
It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.
Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.
We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
That is what I keep saying, Odyssey is too much for consoles. Fdevs underestimated Odyssey, now they see there is no way they can make Odyssey to work on consoles because of consoles limitations. Worst thing is they keep people hoping, they should have cancel it when they first decided to postpone console development. This is utter dog crud. Ever heard of Final Fantasy XIV?
You know... the cross-platform MMO which is now in it's 10th year, 4th expansion and going strong on PC, PS5 and PS4?
God you PC elitists are the worst. The fact is Frontier has cruddy coders and poor management. Their development cycles are way too long, and focus on the wrong things. Frontier refuses to listen to it's playerbase and then abandons them when they feel their investors getting grumpy.
What I don't know whether to accept is does this mean no more updates to current console installations of ED?You're just going to have to move into acceptance sooner or later.

Dude... Oddessy is absolutely NOT too much for consoles. This games graphics and physics is mid-level at best. The problem is poor coding on Frontier's part. They are really, really bad at it. Constant bugs, bad optimization, non-working features. That is what I keep saying, Odyssey is too much for consoles. Dude...that is what I'm saying. I see you don't know Frontier is using their own Cobra engine and they will not abandon it just because consoles.Dude... Current gen consoles are well above the minimum specs for Oddessy. Games like NMS which use similar systems to Elite run very well, have cross-play and continued development. FFXIV is the most popular MMO out currently and is developed on PC and PS4/5 concurrently with simultaneous releases of content. Oh and it ALSO has cross-play/save.
Drop this ridiculous "consoles can't handle it" argument. It just makes you look dumb.
Frontier sucks at game development, THAT is the problem.
I am a PC player, and we are not your enemy, as a VR player, I feel your pain. WRT you being a veteran, thank you for your service sir. As for FDev joining forces with games workshop, thay are already collaborating on FDev making warhammer games, amke of that what you will.
Serves then right
What I don't know whether to accept is does this mean no more updates to current console installations of ED?
Whether I go to the trouble of rebooting my PC Cmdr (Odyssey aside which now I don't get for the PS4 after four years replaying the game as the PS4 version) does this actually mean consoles just stop? i.e. the servers are taken down. I'm not going to read through 52 pages of crud to find out.
I still have a PC copy of the game and, quite frankly, after reading this "news" (account migration aside which means I would have two PC accounts if I leave the PS4 if that happened) I don't know whether I wold buy Odyssey for the PC version now.
I am in the fortunate position of having a fallback to my old PC account but I can fully understand that many console players are going to feel betrayed; really betrayed. My commiserations to them and godspeed to them.... o7.
no more hold to target, double click will be back ??Hey, does this mean finally FD can stop designing the UI with consoles in mind?
I think the "consoles can't handle it" argument works, not because Odyssey is some graphical masterpiece or because consoles are trash, but because optimization for odyssey is just absolutely god awful.Dude...
