Console Update

Apologies if something similar has been posted. I just woke up to this news not too long ago and I'm still at page 20 lol

You're now at the bargaining stage of grief.

You're just going to have to move into acceptance sooner or later. Its done on consoles. Either keep playing what is there or stop.

Same will happen to PC one day as well. We don't know when that will be. We have people in this thread predicting FD will stop development on PC soon and others predicting this now means good things for ED's future.

But in reality, nobody knows.

Go back to 2014 and i think many expected the game wouldn't be supported for more than 10 years with updates, and it isn't far off 10 years now.
I will stop playing, there's no point in ploughing more hours into something that has no future. I've put in over 5,000 hrs so I've had my money's worth and enjoyed my time in the game. I hope one day they may bring it to next gen but I know deep down that won't happen.

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
I thank you for breaking the news to the community. I am glad this has been stored out. I am still a long-time fan of the game when Frontier Elite II was ported to the Atari. Game development was more straightforward in those days. Still a fan! o7

This is utter dog crud. Ever heard of Final Fantasy XIV?

You know... the cross-platform MMO which is now in it's 10th year, 4th expansion and going strong on PC, PS5 and PS4?

God you PC elitists are the worst. The fact is Frontier has cruddy coders and poor management. Their development cycles are way too long, and focus on the wrong things. Frontier refuses to listen to it's playerbase and then abandons them when they feel their investors getting grumpy.
That is what I keep saying, Odyssey is too much for consoles. Fdevs underestimated Odyssey, now they see there is no way they can make Odyssey to work on consoles because of consoles limitations. Worst thing is they keep people hoping, they should have cancel it when they first decided to postpone console development.

Conclusion after 52 pages of comments excluding the consoles: The premature release of Odyssey on PC with all the problems. Planning failure, storm on social media with baiting innocent CM's and in my opinion now the biggest mistake of Frontier's CEO to make a cut. This sudden announcement will now break the company's neck financially in the console market and it is happening with full force. (My condolences at this point for the company's reputation.) At least I hope you're bringing the best console programmers to the table now and exploring the possibilities for next-gen. In short, to carry out damage limitation to an effective extent. When it comes to communication, I would formulate posts in the forum in such a way that they do not require any further personal interaction with CMs. (This is still a big problem today, both for players and staff.)

What I don't know whether to accept is does this mean no more updates to current console installations of ED?

Whether I go to the trouble of rebooting my PC Cmdr (Odyssey aside which now I don't get for the PS4 after four years replaying the game as the PS4 version) does this actually mean consoles just stop? i.e. the servers are taken down. I'm not going to read through 52 pages of crud to find out.

I still have a PC copy of the game and, quite frankly, after reading this "news" (account migration aside which means I would have two PC accounts if I leave the PS4 if that happened) I don't know whether I would buy Odyssey for the PC version now.

I am in the fortunate position of having a fallback to my old PC account but I can fully understand that many console players are going to feel betrayed; really betrayed. My commiserations to them and godspeed to them.... o7.

This is frustrating, have waited for this whole year since release to play on console... it feels like we are being tossed as a burden. kinda unfair.

Can we at least get a full transfer (Ships, assets, credits, arx, paints, cosmetics, CMDR, everything) to a PC account? at least for those who want this? It might the at least something fdev could do for console players.
I do have a steam key, but I don't want to redo 3+ years of Elite.
I do agree with other people that it would be fair if they are given a key for the base game on PC if they want to transfer and don't have the game. They already spent money to purchase the game just to be left out.

Dude... Oddessy is absolutely NOT too much for consoles. This games graphics and physics is mid-level at best. The problem is poor coding on Frontier's part. They are really, really bad at it. Constant bugs, bad optimization, non-working features.

Current gen consoles are well above the minimum specs for Oddessy. Games like NMS which use similar systems to Elite run very well, have cross-play and continued development. FFXIV is the most popular MMO out currently and is developed on PC and PS4/5 concurrently with simultaneous releases of content. Oh and it ALSO has cross-play/save.

Drop this ridiculous "consoles can't handle it" argument. It just makes you look dumb.

Frontier sucks at game development, THAT is the problem.

Dude...that is what I'm saying. I see you don't know Frontier is using their own Cobra engine and they will not abandon it just because consoles.
I'm guessing, they will not make that mistake with new games and they will rather underdevelop them, rather then overdevelop them like they did with Odyssey. They went over their heads with Odyssey.

As I read it, only updates consoles will get now will be minor bug fixes or changes that also apply to Horizons. Also, reading between the lines, it seems like minimal updates for Horizons.

Seems like FD are doubling down on Odyssey.

Unfortunately, Odyssey doesn't bring anything to the game that it couldn't do without.
Great...I can walk with my character now.
Nice idea but I was thinking more of a walk on my Corvette or on the Anaconda.
But what do we get?
A first person shooter, bad performance and another grind to improve weapons and suits.
And now the complete end of the console version.
It would have been better to patch the game back to Horizons immediately after realizing the problems with Oddysey.
After that you could have given all Odyssey buyers (PC and Console) their money back and read again in the forums what the community really wants and then started from the beginning.
You release the game on console, let them play on the system for so long that a lot of people have really built something there.
Release Odyssey for PC only and make them wait and wait only to kick them in the balls with a running start (sorry for the expression).
I play Oddysey on PC but I find Horizons has added 200% more to the game than Oddysey ever wil.
It would have been better to remove Odyssey for everyone and start over.
And then listen to the community a little more instead of trying to somehow copy other space titles in development.

Meanwhile No Man's Sky is updated on every system by a handful of devoted devs. Well done Frontier. Refund or full transfer to PC account. And I mean FULL transfer.

I'm willing to bet you knew fine console wasn't ready for the original date, never mind delayed dates. You didn't even start development on it. Just used the news to give a share hold boom. Well it sure crashed on you now. I'll quit the salt now...

I think the "consoles can't handle it" argument works, not because Odyssey is some graphical masterpiece or because consoles are trash, but because optimization for odyssey is just absolutely god awful.

PC's can barely handle it as it is. What makes you think consoles will?
