Console Update

Maybe make a dedicated thread for this. That way all the like minded console owners should post in the one place (In my ******* dreams ;) )
No way, I have a basic laptop AND a desktop (both are adequate for my needs) and neither will run EDO (I tried with the Steam download last year).

WHY ON EARTH should I spend thousands of £ on upgrades/GPU just to get one TINY little game running? (I am currently, as of today, spending a few £ getting PS4 games I've missed out on due to being so engrossed with ED and feel like a complete wnker for not getting them at the time

Carry on in your little nerd lives with thousands £ spent on PC, HOTAS, CHAIRS, etc, I spent £240 on a PS4 and all other games just WORK!

Greetings Commanders,

Elite Dangerous is a game close to my heart.

It’s no secret that Odyssey’s launch was less than ideal, including the need to split the PC/console player base to focus on a PC-only launch. Since Odyssey’s release in May 2021, we have worked tirelessly to improve the Odyssey experience on PC, and whilst we have made great progress there is still more to be done. We have been supporting the pre-Odyssey and post-Odyssey codebases since.

Over the last several months, we have been wrestling with the best way to move forward, and it is with a heavy heart we have decided to cancel all console development. We need to be able to move forward with the story of the game, and in order for us to do this we need to focus on a single codebase. Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.

We appreciate this news is not what our console community were hoping for. This was not an easy decision to make, but it was made with the long-term future of Elite Dangerous in mind.
Well, as usual, you strung the community along and then went radio silent, then dropped a duece most unceremoniously. What a crap way to give this kind of news.
Why don't you as a company quit ting on the people that bought your game. Have the courtesy to be ing honest instead of feeding us rubbish, broken promises, and silence until you figure out what to say.
You've ed this pooch into a coma. It's done. When you're done adding whatever content that you can actually get working, then be honest, let us know when you're going to put it in maintenance mode for good. We know it's coming, it's obvious. Just give us that much respect, at least. It ain't that hard.

You posted this, yes?
I am a console player but don't wish to spend hundreds (or thousands even) on GPUs to get a crappy FPS DLC for a perfectly workable game (EDH) on console transferred to a PC.
(I have a FC and could transfer my stuff easily to a PC account)

2 years servers running at most, maybe 3 or 4 for PC players.

All I said to the guy who wants to move to PC is start a dedicated thread. Somewhere for others to post to. You aren't a like minded console owner then are you? So what the hell are you on about? Go and shout at Braben.

When Odyssey launched with 'issues', I fully expected that it would never come to PS4/Xbox One, but maybe Odyssey would become available on PS5/Series X despite FDev stating ‘no plans for next gen consoles’ at the time (damn my optimism). Now, if FDev would have just come forth and said ‘no Odyssey for console’, I'd have been (disappointed but) fine with that, but to come out with ‘no Odyssey’ AND no further development for consoles at all, man that is something else. I'm thankful for the update (sad that it is) but also really annoyed and tired with this minimalistic that is FDev posts. Like, for example:

Elite Dangerous will continue on console as it is now together with critical updates, but we will focus on new content updates on PC on the post-Odyssey codebase.
  1. How this affect future CGs? Does this mean no new module rewards etc. will be available for console? Will there be any new CGs in console/Horizon if/when those are mainly accessible in Odyssey?
  2. So, no new planetary POIs related to ongoing/future story lines even if those locations would be accessible in Horizon also? What about related orbital POIs?
  3. Will GalNet still be reporting news/events even if the content is not accessible in console/Horizon (Like it did with Scorpion SRV)?
  4. If there are (future) story related changes on engineers/power play/permits (like Palin previously), will those also be implemented on console?
Essentially what constitutes as a critical update and how will this affect consoles in the future outside 'no new content'. I'm sure there are many more questions but that's my point: further information/clarifications would be appreciated.

Beyond that, I really do hope that FDev will in near future provide a way to transfer (at least a limited amount) of ships/modules along with cosmetics from console to PC. For example, I have 3500+ hours on PS4/PS5 and own a handful of decals, paint jobs and modules obtained from CGs or special events over the years that aren’t available any other way. Not to mention all the cosmetics I’ve bought from the store, some with free arx, some with real money. Above those, the idea of losing all the ships and modules (of which there are many) that I’ve spent hundreds of hours on to engineer or grinding for mats, is absolutely soul crushing. Not sure if I personally would take on that offer at this point, but really hope that it would be an option for those wishing to do so.

Regardless, I truly and honestly hope that with this decision FDev can properly fix Odyssey and provides some great storylines in the future, even if I may never experience those.

As PC player I reckon FDEV need to, at a minimum, offer a free total conversion to PC: Free license, full commander migration/save game/arx/the works.
That should have been part of the announcement - it's not as if they haven't had time to think about it....plus, ED was free for a time in Epic Games a while back and had horizons added for free when EDO was released.

If I'd been Braben, I would have gone further and included free Odyssey upgrades as part of the console to PC migration; short term monetary loss for long term gain (many would likely buy arx - and it's not as if some big future story arc/feature set couldn't be paywalled for all).
Not every console player has/wants a PC so they'd be lost anyway, but some will want to migrate. Sweeten the deal and make it right.

We can also add the background simulation to the question.

Probably all console versions and PC Horizons will be completely decoupled from all progress in the universe at some point. So no CGs, no GalNet, no or a separate BGS. So basically nothing left what makes the game what it is. Basically just a sandbox space trucker and fight game left, within a dead game world.

Perhaps some people might still play it (5-10?), but they could've just announced that they will pull the server plugs in x weeks (probably some legal reasons why they haven't announced that yet).

I'm still really disappointed that they weren't able to clarify in their announcement whether consoles saves can be ported to PC. That is the least they should've included in their announcement after such a long waiting time. The announcement as it stands was just a slap into the face of every console CMDR.

Surely they MUST know we exist and want this, desperately! Lol
Maybe move outside of the bubble that is Frontier's forums. I'm sure YouTubers like Obsidian Ant and Yamiks would bring it to the greater gaming public for starters (if they haven't already). Companies hate negative press as we all know by now.

The answer to all of those questions is "Console is in maintenance mode, it will technically run but we will not touch it at all (unless maybe in the event of complete failure so we can say it's still playable)".
Sorry to be pessimistic but this is the answer FDEV will not say out loud.

You’re not wrong. That’s usually where I am. It’s very rare that I come here.
While Yamiks isn’t well liked by Fdev, he is probably the most vocal, regarding console players - nothing against OA.

(I double posted this, by accident) oof

Jeez.
I've been reading some of these consolier posts. And it hit me.
What if pc were being binned and all my work... the grinds the relogs the mindless mining, the engineering grinds ship n foot.
100s if not 1000s of hours spent... spent, all gone.
This is not right.
Is there a precedent? A comparison?
It's cold and heartless with no regard at all for cmdrs who love this game, and have been binned for technical or otherwise, reasons.
Another commercial disaster!
And one that leaves alot of cmdrs out in the cold unable to play oddity as it progresses.
Daft!
I get that they wanna focus development on pc yeah sure but just caning consoles is wrong.
